Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colorblindness has become an integral part of the national conversation on race in America. Given the assumptions behind this influential metaphor—that being blind to race will lead to racial equality—it's curious that, until now, we have not considered if or how the blind "see" race. Most sighted people assume that the answer is obvious: they don't, and are therefore incapable of racial bias—an example that the sighted community should presumably follow. In Blinded by Sight,Osagie K. Obasogie shares a startling observation made during discussions with people from all walks of life who have been blind since birth: even the blind aren't colorblind—blind people understand race visually, just like everyone else. Ask a blind person what race is, and they will more than likely refer to visual cues such as skin color. Obasogie finds that, because blind people think about race visually, they orient their lives around these understandings in terms of who they are friends with, who they date, and much more. In Blinded by Sight, Obasogie argues that rather than being visually obvious, both blind and sighted people are socialized to see race in particular ways, even to a point where blind people "see" race. So what does this mean for how we live and the laws that govern our society? Obasogie delves into these questions and uncovers how color blindness in law, public policy, and culture will not lead us to any imagined racial utopia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The election of Barack Obama gave political currency to the (white) idea that Americans now live in a post-racial society. But the persistence of racial profiling, economic inequality between blacks and whites, disproportionate numbers of black prisoners, and disparities in health and access to healthcare suggest there is more to the story. David H. Ikard addresses these issues in an effort to give voice to the challenges faced by most African Americans and to make legible the shifting discourse of white supremacist ideology—including post-racialism and colorblind politics—that frustrates black self-determination, agency, and empowerment in the 21st century. Ikard tackles these concerns from various perspectives, chief among them black feminism. He argues that all oppressions (of race, gender, class, sexual orientation) intersect and must be confronted to upset the status quo.

Unable to be dislodged from narrow, rigid, dogmatic viewpoints. Is there a way to move past this paralysis—what Dr. Edward Gamble calls “narrow-blindedness”—towards an open mind? In From Narrow-Blinded to Open Minded: An Alternative Approach for Improved Decision-Making, Dr. Gamble offers the “3T” model—think, talk, and take action—to bring back civil and productive dialogue to work toward innovative solutions. For each aspect of the model, Dr. Gamble explores the modern foibles contributing to the problem, adding entertaining stories from his travels around the globe and offers logical alternate strategies and actions to help us take a more effective path. Edward Gamble, PhD, is an accounting and tax professor specializing in accountability from both micro and macro perspectives. He is a Canadian, Irish, and US citizen and has worked and traveled extensively around the world. For more information, please visit www.edward.gamble.com.

Book excerpt: NOW A MAJOR HBO EUROPE TV SERIES Kuba is a cocaine dealer in the dark, electric streets of Warsaw, believing he is smart enough to stay in control, unlike the top lawyers, doctors, TV personalities who are his client base. However, after calling in the debt of a failing nightclub owner, breaking his own rules on other people’s property and being caught in the consequences of his clients’ actions, all control starts to slip from his grasp. Now suffering under the glare of the spotlight and dragged into the dark underbelly of the drug world, Kuba must find a way through the middle of the whirlwind of violence and betrayal sweeping him away. 'Tough, knowing, high-octane crime fiction... Los Angeles has James Ellroy, Boston has Dennis Lehane, Oslo has Jo Nesbo. And Warsaw has its own two-fisted crime laureate in Jakub Żulczyk. Already a massive bestseller in Poland, this is brilliant stuff from a fresh new voice in crime fiction.' Tony Parsons 'Jakub Żulczyk’s Blinded by the Lights is dark, dangerous, and seductive. A multi-layered story that – like his anti-hero’s product – will assault your senses and leave you craving for more. This is post-Communist Warsaw, but it could be Moscow, New York, or London. A truly terrific piece of writing and I can’t recommend it enough.' G.D. Abson 'A striking novel, brilliantly written - for the fans of the dark and gritty!' Robert Bryndza 'This gothic odyssey... is decidedly not for the faint of heart' Publishers Weekly Jakub Żulczyk is a rising star of the Eastern European literature scene. Blinded by the Lights was adapted into a TV series by HBO Europe and listed as one of the best TV shows made in Europe in 2018. Żulczyk is a successful screenwriter behind the 2023 Netflix drama series "Feedback" and author of the claustrophobic thriller The Institute.

Book excerpt: "The auditorium was packed with hundreds of people young and old, mostly casually dressed and there was this huge shout of joy bubbling up from all the rows of people. Children running in the aisles and having a great time and the band was playing really loudly. Oh Man! It was so alive and free! It felt like I was coming home after a long journey through a dry and thirsty desert." "Something inside me just cracked up after all those months of pain and suddenly I found myself weeping uncontrollably in the back row of this living church. This was a new revelation and it lived and breathed the joy of God's Holy Presence." "Over the last thirty years I have met many men and women who have had a wondrous and powerful experience in which they have personally been confronted by God in such amazing ways that their lives have changed forever." This is a true story written as a novel and it began many years ago in the little seaside town of Jeffreys Bay, which became famous as a surfing paradise because of its powerful waves, a fisherman's dream because of its fantastic fish and a village which has become a holiday destination for the rich and famous.

Book excerpt: One day a teenage boy gets on his bike and rides forty miles up California’s Pacific Coast Highway to avoid causing an earthquake he fears will endanger his mother and sister. But the quake he is experiencing is not coming from beneath the earth; it’s the onset of bipolar illness. Blinded by Hope describes what it’s like to have an unusually bright, creative child—and then to have that child suddenly be hit with an illness that defies description and cure. Over the years, McGuire attributes her son’s lost jobs, broken relationships, legal troubles, and periodic hospitalizations to the manic phase of his illness, denying the severity of his growing drug use—but ultimately, she has to face her own addiction to rescuing him, and to forge a path for herself toward acceptance, resilience, and love. A wakeup call about the epidemic of mental illness, substance abuse, and mass incarceration in our society, Blinded by Hope shines a light on the shadow of family dynamics that shame, ignorance, and stigma rarely let the public see, and asks the question: How does a mother cope when love is not enough?
