Book excerpt: Parentless Parents is the first book to show how the absence of grandparents impacts everything about the way mothers and fathers raise their children--from everyday parenting decisions to the relationships they have with their spouses and in-laws. For the first time in U.S. history, as the average age of women giving birth has increased significantly, millions of children are at risk of having fewer years with their grandparents than ever before. How has this substantial shift affected parents and kids? Journalist, award-winning television producer, and parentless parent Allison Gilbert has polled and studied more than 1,300 parentless parents from across the United States and a dozen other countries to find out. Through her pioneering research, Gilbert not only shares her own story and the significant and poignant effect that this trend has had on her and hundreds of other families, but also the myriad ways these mothers and fathers have learned to keep the memory of their parents alive for their children, and to find the support and understanding they need.

(Galatians 6:9 KJV) When we act on our human emotions, we are led unto our own desires, but are our desires the desires that God has for us? Every one of us had and still have challenges in our lives but no matter what may influence our lives, we should know that we are more than conquerors and that our Heavenly Father will never leave us or forsake us. But he could, if and when, we dash our feet against the stone but remember that the rejected stone became the chief corner stone, solid as a rock with a strong foundation of salvation and liberty. (Psalm 118:22 KJV) We are free, so let's pull ourselves up by our bootstraps and stand firm like the women of God that we are. Beloved think it not strange concerning the fiery trails which is to try you as though some strange thing has happened to you. (1 Peter 4:12 KJV) Our Heavenly Father knows the way that we will take, and when he hath tried us, we shall come forth as pure as gold. (Job 23:10 NLT) Purged, a vessel of honor, sanctified, and meet for the Master's use and prepared to do every good work. (2 Timothy 2:21 KJV - NIV). I love you all!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zieglitz's Blessing tells the story of a multigenerational search for identity and the meaning of a man's life. From childhood, Rod Zieglitz questions the truthfulness of his Hebrew name, which means "God will show mercy." Sometimes that name seems fitting. At other times, though, it strikes Zieglitz as a cruel joke. Only on his deathbed, grappling with the challenges he's faced, does Zieglitz rightly understand the notion of God's blessing for the first time. While Zieglitz's Blessing is often comic and even irreverent, it's an ultimately serious tale that runs the gamut from suffering to consolation, transgression to forgiveness, and faith lost to trust restored.

Boykin of Mobile, Alabama, on my father's side of the family. Some highlights from the manuscript: Congressman Boykin started the multiethnic, multireligious Kounter Klan to challenge the corrupt Ku Klux Klan in Alabama and other Southern States. He served in Congress for over twenty-eight years but remained a man of the people. Boykin was also involved in real estate, where he purchased more than three million acres during his lifetime, developing Homosassa Springs in Florida with President Truman's brother. He had over eighteen different businesses, including in timber, farming, cattle raising, and shipbuilding. Boykin's suggestion is untold history setting the English Channel ablaze during World War II and helped thwart the Nazi invasion of the country of England. Also, a movie that was to be made in the '50s and '60s by Breedlove Production Company in Los Angeles, California, have been unable to find out if it is sitting in a can in a Hollywood, California, studio and if it was ever made. Charlton Heston was proposed to star in it, and the title was trademarked called Everything Is Made for Love, Frank Boykin's motto for over forty years. It tells of sexual and physical abuse, bullying through childhood to adulthood, divorces, being conned, and the con receiving seven years in prison, having four fathers from age two to fourteen. Travel experiences to other countries and of family, children, cousins, abduction, and the way to learning one's true self and identity.

Book excerpt: Detective Inspector Tom Reynolds searches for the missing links between a recent murder case and a series of decades-old crimes in this Irish closed-room mystery In 1975, a baby just minutes old is taken from its devastated mother. In 2010, the gruesome corpse of a nun is found in a Dublin public park. Detective Inspector Tom Reynolds and his team are on the scene and he’s convinced the murder is linked to historical events that took place in the infamous former Magdalene Laundries, institutions for “fallen women.” As Reynolds and his team follow the trail to an isolated convent, everything seems perfectly normal and it seems perhaps they’ve followed the wrong lead. But it soon becomes disturbingly clear that the killer is amongst them and determined to exact further vengeance for the sins of the past. The walls in this closed-room mystery narrow in on Reynolds and his team as they race to stop another murder in With Our Blessing, bestselling author Jo Spain’s U.S. debut.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been numerous publications in the last decades on the Bible in literature, film, and art. But until now, no reference work has yet appeared on the Bible as it appears in Western music. In The Bible in Music: A Dictionary of Songs, Works, and More, scholars Siobhán Dowling Long and John F. A. Sawyer correct this gap in Biblical reference literature, providing for the first time a convenient guide to musical interpretations of the Bible. Alongside examples of classical music from the Middle Ages through modern times, Dowling Long and Sawyer also bring attention to the Bible’s impact on popular culture with numerous entries on hymns, spirituals, musicals, film music, and contemporary popular music. Each entry contains essential information about the original context of the work (date, composer, etc.) and, where relevant, its afterlife in literature, film, politics, and liturgy. It includes an index of biblical references and an index of biblical names, as well as a detailed timeline that brings to the fore key events, works, and publications, placing them in their historical context. There is also a bibliography, a glossary of technical terms, and an index of artists, authors, and composers. The Bible in Music will fascinate anyone familiar with the Bible, but it is also designed to encourage choirs, musicians, musicologists, lecturers, teachers, and students of music and religious education to discover and perform some less well-known pieces, as well as helping them to listen to familiar music with a fresh awareness of what it is about.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contributed two-volume work tackles a fascinating topic: how and why God plays a central role in the modern world and profoundly influences politics, art, culture, and our moral reflection—even for nonbelievers. God—in the many ways that people around the globe conceptualize Him, Her, or It—is one of the most powerful, divisive, unifying, and creative elements of human culture. The two volumes of God and Popular Culture: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Entertainment Industry's Most Influential Figure provide readers with a balanced and accessible analysis of this fascinating topic that allows anyone who appreciates any art, music, television, film, and other forms of entertainment to have a new perspective on a favorite song or movie. Written by a collective of both believers and nonbelievers, the essays enable both nonreligious individuals and those who are spiritually guided to consider how culture approaches and has appropriated God to reveal truths about humanity and society. The book discusses the intersections of God with film, television, sports, politics, commerce, and popular culture, thereby documenting how the ongoing messages and conversations about God that occur among the general population also occur within the context of the entertainment that we as members of society consume—often without our recognition of the discussion.

Book excerpt: When the basic conceptions of the world held by whole generations in the West are formed by popular culture, and in particular by the music that serves as its soundtrack, can theology remain unchanged? The authors of the essays in this important volume insist that the answer is no. These gifted theologians help readers make sense of what happens to religious experience in a world heavily influenced by popular media culture, a world in which songs, musicians, and celebrities influence our individual and collective imaginations about how we might live. Readers will consider the theological relationship between music and the creative process, investigate ways that music helps create communities of heightened moral consciousness, and explore the theological significance of songs. Contributors to this fascinating collection include: David Dalt Maeve Heaney Daniel White Hodge Michael J. Iafrate Jeffrey F. Keuss Mary McDonough Gina Messina-Dysert Christian Scharen Myles Werntz Tom Beaudoin is associate professor of theology at Fordham University, specializing inpractical theology. His books include Witness to Dispossession: The Vocation of a Postmodern Theologian; Consuming Faith: Integrating Who We Are with What We Buy; and Virtual Faith: The Irreverent Spiritual Faith of Generation X. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blessed Are the Others: Jesus' Way in a Violent World by Andrew DeCort is a guide that navigates the teachings of Jesus through the lens of the Beatitudes. It offers a trail to a more fulfilling life through vulnerability, compassion, nonviolence, justice, and peacemaking, challenging conventional understandings of religious blessings and prosperity. Andrew calls this humane happiness. The book is not just about exploring spirituality but also delves into historical and societal context-specifically the influence of political unrest and conflict on the Ethiopian people. It emphasizes the importance of confronting and processing grief and focuses on the societal implications that arise from unresolved pain. Notably, Blessed Are the Others encourages its readers to engage with their pain, promote healing not vengeance, and find solace even amidst suffering. By acknowledging these struggles, the book underscores the transformative power of facing grief with honesty and courage. The book also features real-life examples of individuals like Etty Hillesum and Dietrich Bonhoeffer who chose mercy over judgment in the face of extreme injustice. It makes an appeal to its readers to foster a similar sense of compassion and understanding, treating the Beatitudes as a tool for navigating challenges such as poverty, grief, violence, and injustice. Moreover, the book explores the life and teachings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a Christian leader who spoke out against extreme injustice during World War II. Bonhoeffer's dedication to love, humility, and the courage to stand against oppression is extensively highlighted. His teachings and life offer insightful perspectives on love and humility as transformative powers even in the face of adversity. Blessed Are the Others discusses the seven decisions or way-stations on Jesus' Beatitudinal Way, beginning from poverty and transitioning all the way to persecution. It emphasizes the importance of vulnerability, compassion, and justice, and addresses the hurdles we may encounter on this path.
