Book excerpt: Over the years hundreds of thousands of people have attempted to portray the black person's struggle and suffering that has occurred with the development of our world. There is, however, no way to accurately depicted the feelings and emotions of these people because the majority have never experienced it or let alone even imagined the lives that these people were forced to live. Slavery was one of the most horrific and in human acts ever instilled on a race of people ever in our world's history. People were stolen from their homelands, broken apart from their families, and were thrust into a lifestyle that inhibited their every move and instilled harsh punishments on them. It is almost impossible for many of us to comprehend the mindsets that these slave owners possessed, but history paints a truly horrific and emotional picture for us all to see. The history of health for black Americans has been one of deep inequity. At the start of the 1900s to 2018

Book excerpt: The home and the classroom have been traditionally key in the identity development and academic progress of African-American youth. Despite this history, the dropout rates of African-African males in secondary grades are increasing, while academic achievement scores of African-American males in the primary grades are not. The racial and gender composition of elementary school teachers does not mirror that of the students. This may contribute to the disproportionate achievement scores between African-American and Caucasian American students. In this book, Dr. B. L Daniels will explore some possible causes and solutions to this epidemic by highlighting the third largest school district in North Carolina. This book is a partnership of narrative and statistical fact, in hopes of stimulating a move to action of preventing another generation from being labeled "Endangered Species."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from the work of top researchers in various fields, The Handbook of Research on Black Males explores the nuanced and multifaceted phenomena known as the black male. Simultaneously hyper-visible and invisible, black males around the globe are being investigated now more than ever before; however, many of the well-meaning responses regarding media attention paid to black males are not well informed by research. Additionally, not all black males are the same, and each of them have varying strengths and challenges, making one-size-fits-all perspectives unproductive. This text, which acts as a comprehensive tool that can serve as a resource to articulate and argue for policy change, suggest educational improvements, and advocate judicial reform, fills a large void. The contributors, from multidisciplinary backgrounds, focus on history, research trends, health, education, criminal and social justice, hip-hop, and programs and initiatives. This volume has the potential to influence the field of research on black males as well as improve lives for a population that is often the most celebrated in the media and simultaneously the least socially valued.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of black masculinity in the twenty-first century. Through a series of critical and interdisciplinary essays, this work examines the image of the black male in American society as a Toby Waller stereotype. Toby Waller is the fictional, yet symbolic character from Alex Haley’s highly acclaimed book and mini-series, Roots. It is a richly detailed, fictional story about slavery and one enslaved African man’s struggle to regain freedom. The parallel of the life of enslaved Toby Waller is similar to present day black males. Both are individuals who are often stripped of their cultural identity and exist within an institutional and systemic framework that devalues black male life. This dichotomy is the historical platform to discuss how those in the annals of white America demarcate which embodiment merits inclusion into societal acceptance.

Book excerpt: Here is an introduction to salient topics and issues affecting Black males as they engage in adult basic education programs, pursue employment, and obtain higher education. The chapters include academic research as well as program descriptions and personal narratives with a concern for the “lived experiences” and the voices of the men. While not exhaustive, this volumne does hope to challenge commonly held stereotypes, interactions, and policies. It is designed to raise questions about the unique experiences of this specific population and to explore the sociocultural dynamics that impact their education. This is the 144th volume of the Jossey Bass series New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education. Noted for its depth of coverage, it explores issues of common interest to instructors, administrators, counselors, and policymakers in a broad range of education settings, such as colleges and universities, extension programs, businesses, libraries, and museums.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an historical foot note, some historians feel the Germans got their plan for their "final solution" to the Jewish problem from America's treatment of Blacks between 1914 and 1935. The newspaper accounts of the East St. Louis Massacre and other lynching's and white race riots were widely circulated in the French, English and German press. Nazi Germans realized that if the entire dominant community is against a minority or unpopular members of that community, after sufficient vilification of the minority or unpopular group, the dominant group can do what they want no matter how horrible the punishment. It will mirror public opinion and thereby be justified. The Nazi cause was also the same as White Supremacy in the United States. The 65 Congress left the circumstances evolving around this event for future generations to discuss. That generation is ours. The East St. Louis Massacre of 1917 is exhibit. A" evidence for reparations for past atrocities against Black Americans. Not as former slaves, but as human beings and free citizens of the United States. "It is the ultimate end of unchecked American Racism. From 1999 to 2009, among those aged 15 to 34 years, there were 106,271 homicides, 85% (89,887) among men and 49% (52,265) among black men. One major and hotly debated issue is firearms. Specifically, 81% (85,643) of all homicides were due to firearms, including 91% (47,513) among black men. Homicide is, far and away, the leading cause of death of young black men. In stark contrast, accidents are, far and away, the leading cause of death among young nonblack men and women of all races and ethnicities. Black men are 6 times more likely to die as the result of and 7 times more likely to commit murder than their white counterparts. One eighth of the population is black, but one half of all homicide victims are black. Their reduced life expectancy of more than 6 years would be improved more from eliminating homicide than abolishing any other causes of death except cardiovascular disease or cancer. The rate at which Blacks killed Blacks in 1994 was 876 times greater, and the rate at which they killed Whites was 164 times greater, than the rate at which Whites killed Blacks. Whites were twice as likely to be killed by Blacks as by Hispanics. Blacks were twice as likely as Hispanics and 71 times as likely as Whites to kill members of their own race. One quarter of the nation's homicides were committed by the 0.7% of the population who were Black men between the ages of 18-24. If there were no Blacks or Hispanics in the US at all, our homicide rate might be as low as North Dakota, or 0.2 per 100,000 populations, which is 1/49th of its all time high of 9.8 in 1991.
