Book Synopsis Black and Brown Planets by : Isiah Lavender III
Download or read book Black and Brown Planets written by Isiah Lavender III and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black and Brown Planets embarks on a timely exploration of the American obsession with color in its look at the sometimes-contrary intersections of politics and race in science fiction. The contributors, including De Witt D. Kilgore, Edward James, Lisa Yaszek, and Marleen S. Barr, among others, explore science fiction worlds of possibility (literature, television, and film), lifting blacks, Latin Americans, and indigenous peoples out from the background of this historically white genre. This collection considers the role of race and ethnicity in our visions of the future. The first section emphasizes the political elements of black identity portrayed in science fiction from black America to the vast reaches of interstellar space framed by racial history. In the next section, analysis of indigenous science fiction addresses the effects of colonization, helps discard the emotional and psychological baggage carried from its impact, and recovers ancestral traditions in order to adapt in a post-Native-apocalyptic world. Likewise, this section explores the affinity between science fiction and subjectivity in Latin American cultures from the role of science and industrialization to the effects of being in and moving between two cultures. By infusing more color in this otherwise monochrome genre, Black and Brown Planets imagines alternate racial galaxies with viable political futures in which people of color determine human destiny.
Download or read book Ink from the Pen written by Mark Olmsted and published by . This book was released on 2017-04-18 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ink from the Pen is the story of an educated, HIV+ gay man whose decades-long walk on the wild side came crashing down in 2004, when he found himself facing nine months in prison for dealing the crystal meth he'd become addicted to during the worst of the AIDS epidemic. An accomplished writer, Olmsted soon discovered his love of words was precisely what would get him through the experience. With a keen eye for the finely-observed detail and an unerring capacity to deftly convey the poignancy and absurdities of incarceration, Mark learned that creativity is one of the most powerful survival tools there is. "This is a haunting and beautiful story from the depths of the California state prison system, of people found and left behind, acts of defiant joy, tender moments of generosity, soul-searching, and looking desperately for glimmers in the darkness. Characters with such rich and vivid names as Jack Hammer, Drifter, Thumper and Chainsaw may have been forgotten by society, but Olmsted puts them in such indelible ink you will carry them with you long after you close this remarkable memoir." - Kathy Hepinstall, The Book of Polly

For mostly political reasons, there is no formal process for cataloging or registering new varieties or cultivars of these important plants which sell in the billions per year. In 2013, the Open Registration Of Cultivars (OROC) aka "Oh-rock" program was created to provide a worldwide guide to new hardy herbaceous plants. This Fall 2018 edition provides 77 pages of plant descriptions, images, and links to buy to study the new plants in the public interest. It is 100% free.

Book Synopsis Oriental Rugs from Pacific Collections by : Murray L. Eiland
Download or read book Oriental Rugs from Pacific Collections written by Murray L. Eiland and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When plans were made to hold an exhibition from private collections, to accompany the Vlth International Conference on Oriental Carpets, the goal was initially for a modest number of carpets to be furnished by Pacific Coast collectors. Two factors, however, dramatically expanded the scale of the operation. The organizers became aware early in the game that there is a great wealth of world-class material in these collections, and the enormous space available in the hall at Fort Mason imposed virtually no limitation on the number that could be included. The result has been what must be the largest showing in the history of collectible oriental rugs under a single roof, with now slightly upward of three hundred in "Oriental Rugs from Pacific Collections," supplemented by over a hundred from other sources as well. Within this assortment of more than four hundred rugs, there is surely something for every taste. With more than 230 of these rugs in color, the catalogue also takes on a massive quality, allowing readers to experience or reexperience a monumental event in the history of oriental rug exhibits."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
