Book excerpt: The Battles of Antietam and Gettysburg are widely recognized as tactical victories for the Union’s Army of the Potomac. Following both battles, however, the respective commanding generals. General McClellan and General Meade, were sharply criticized for having failed to vigorously pursue General Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia in order to deliver a decisive blow. Both Union commanders offered a list of extenuating circumstances, such as battle fatigue, large casualties and lack of supplies, which precluded a “premature” pursuit of General Lee. Upon examination, however, their inability to conceptualize a decisive pursuit of General Lee’s army points to a direct failure at the operational level of War. Both Union generals were unable to link their tactical victories to any larger strategic objective. The reasons for this from the strategic confusion of a conflict evolving from limited War to total War, and from the void in operational training that left both McClellan and Meade ill prepared to perform successfully at this critical level of Warfare. Examining this operational void, it becomes apparent that a commander’s construct of War must be complete, that is, fully cognizant of the strategic, operational and tactical levels of War, in order to achieve success beyond the limits of the tactical battlefield. Such an examination points to the criticality of the operational level of Warfare, highlights the importance of the commander’s concept of operations and suggests that an operational commander must grow in the sense that his cognitive processes must be tuned into the dynamics of his environment, not only on a tactical level, but on the operational and strategic level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of essays by renowned Civil War historians provides a comprehensive history of the legendary Iron Brigade and its service to the Union. Fighting in the Civil War for the Union Army of the Potomac, Brigadier General Rufus King’s Wisconsin Brigade was the only all-Western Brigade to fight for the Eastern armies of the Union. Known as "The Black Hat Brigade" because the soldiers wore the regular army’s dress black hat instead of the more typical blue cap, they were renowned for their discipline and valor in combat. From Brawner Farm and Second Bull Run to Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, the Western soldiers were giants of the battlefield, earning their reputation as “The Iron Brigade.” And when the war was over, the records showed that it led all federal brigades in percentage of deaths in battle. These essays, by some of the most renowned Civil War historians and experts on the brigade, spotlight significant moments in the history of this celebrated unit. "Editors Alan Nolan and Sharon Eggleston Vipond's insightful essays provide fresh perspectives on the Iron Brigade's exploits, detailing military and political events in the words of actual combatants."—Military Review

Book excerpt: A revolutionary re-creation of the historic Antietam Battlefield photographs The Battle of Antietam, fought in Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862, was the bloodiest single day of the Civil War, with 23,000 casualties on both sides. While the battle was tactically inconclusive, it resulted in two significant milestones. First, because Robert E. Lee failed to carry the war successfully into the North, Great Britain was dissuaded from recognizing the Confederate States of America diplomatically. Second, the battle gave President Abraham Lincoln the confidence to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. After the battle, two photographers sent by Mathew Brady--Alexander Gardner and James Gibson--recorded the horror of war with the first-ever images of dead American soldiers. Gardner's and Gibson's legendary photos have been the subject of debate for decades. The lack of information about locations, dates, and times in the thousands of photographs taken during the war has limited any thorough understanding of the photographers' work and led to much speculation. In Shadows of Antietam, Robert J. Kalasky has painstakingly re-created Gardner's and Gibson's output, retracing their footsteps by location, date, and time to chronologically and sequentially place their images. With the help of reenactors and black-and-white photography, Kalasky has assembled a comprehensive study, based on sunlight and shadow, of the 74 known glass plates recorded by Gardner and Gibson at Antietam. Civil War photography historians and buffs will appreciate this groundbreaking research for correcting previous errors and misjudgments made about the photographers' trek across the battlefield and for answering 150-year-old questions about their photographs. "Kalasky has produced a seminal study on the photography of Antietam. This important work should be required reading for all serious students of the battle." --Ted Alexander, Chief Historian, Antietam National Battlefield "Kalasky brings to the living the dead of Antietam." --Dennis Frye, author of Antietam Revealed

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of what we know regarding the Civil War today pertains to famous battles - Antietam, Gettysburg - or famous people - Mosby, Grant, or Lee. Many stories remain untold; shrouded in mystery. This book is an attempt to shed light on the contribution of one such entity which in innovative ways fought to preserve the rights of its fellow citizens. This was the Confederate Secret Services. Special operation units are nothing new to American history. Long before there were Ranger Battalions, Jedburgh Detachments, or the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), there existed numerous special operations detachments that made up the entire Confederate Secret Services. These brave men and women comprised the covert fighting ability of the Confederacy. Of all the other special operations entities that were created to establish 'a better state of the peace' that had previously existed, none other made such a massive contribution to the war effort.
