Book excerpt: This tale of a man and woman brought together by an abandoned newborn “impressively mixes traumatic history, gritty reality, and resilient hope”(Publishers Weekly). In Benevolence, Washington, the Lamont family’s luscious handmade chocolates are a beloved tradition—and the sweetest of comforts. And for the most reserved of the three Lamont sisters, they’re a much-needed way to challenge the past, rekindle hope—and make happiness for a lifetime. Caring family and friends, tranquil streets—ex-prosecutor Willow Lamont wishes these could make her feel truly at home. She’s back to help her grandfather manage Chocolate Haven, a long-held dream come true. But she’s struggling to make their unique fudge—and to cope with a secret trauma that haunts her. Yet when she finds an abandoned baby who breaks her heart wide open, she wonders how long she can hide her emotions—especially from warm, handsome, and way too nosey Deputy Sheriff Jax Gordon. Always an outsider, Jax knows more than he should about loss. But he didn’t expect his difficult search for baby “Miracle’s” mother would reveal such a vulnerable side to the accomplished, beautiful woman he’s always admired. Earning Willow’s trust is the hardest thing he’s ever had to do. Yet between her honesty and courage, he’s longing to fill her life with rekindled joy—and a forever of irresistible love. Praise for Shirlee McCoy’s Sweet Haven “Fans of Debbie Macomber will appreciate McCoy’s sweet, funny, heartwarming romance with its friendly, small-town setting.” —Booklist “A delicious small-town treat.” —Library Journal

Book excerpt: "May the heart, in its exhaustion, remember to rest and indulge into the sweet memories of love songs resounding from its yesteryears. These are the soft rambles that filled your mind as you lay awake in bed at the early hours of dawn. Those austere longings that snared your heart, relentless as the wind blowing on the trees, swift as the waves kissing the sand, tenacious as the rain chiming in with the beat of the music coming from your stereo, they are here—neatly scribbled and compiled into an anthology. These are your stories. The love notes you hastily jotted down at the last page of your high school textbook, the poems you composed during your weekend getaways, the letters you struggled to ink on stationeries while ardently wishing that one day, the love of your life will find and read them. They are finally here. The long walks on the beach. The late-night conversations. The sultry kisses at the back seat of your car. The lingering glances. The love songs. The promises. The sweet nothings! They are all here, captured in prose and poetry. So, dear reader, bury your nose on the pages with utmost gusto. Whether you are a sojourner, a bold and willing settler, or a classic runaway in love, you’ve had your own share of sweet nothings, I am sure. Allow yourself to remember. Allow yourself to rediscover your youth, relive the love stories that ended, make peace with the pains they caused. Above all, allow yourself to breathe and celebrate the love stories that won over the years and stayed."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweet tooth is a powerful thing. Babies everywhere seem to smile when tasting sweetness for the first time, a trait inherited, perhaps, from our ancestors who foraged for sweet foods that were generally safer to eat than their bitter counterparts. But the "science of sweet" is only the beginning of a fascinating story, because it is not basic human need or simple biological impulse that prompts us to decorate elaborate wedding cakes, scoop ice cream into a cone, or drop sugar cubes into coffee. These are matters of culture and aesthetics, of history and society, and we might ask many other questions. Why do sweets feature so prominently in children's literature? When was sugar called a spice? And how did chocolate evolve from an ancient drink to a modern candy bar? The Oxford Companion to Sugar and Sweets explores these questions and more through the collective knowledge of 265 expert contributors, from food historians to chemists, restaurateurs to cookbook writers, neuroscientists to pastry chefs. The Companion takes readers around the globe and throughout time, affording glimpses deep into the brain as well as stratospheric flights into the world of sugar-crafted fantasies. More than just a compendium of pastries, candies, ices, preserves, and confections, this reference work reveals how the human proclivity for sweet has brought richness to our language, our art, and, of course, our gastronomy. In nearly 600 entries, beginning with "à la mode" and ending with the Italian trifle known as "zuppa inglese," the Companion traces sugar's journey from a rare luxury to a ubiquitous commodity. In between, readers will learn about numerous sweeteners (as well-known as agave nectar and as obscure as castoreum, or beaver extract), the evolution of the dessert course, the production of chocolate, and the neurological, psychological, and cultural responses to sweetness. The Companion also delves into the darker side of sugar, from its ties to colonialism and slavery to its addictive qualities. Celebrating sugar while acknowledging its complex history, The Oxford Companion to Sugar and Sweets is the definitive guide to one of humankind's greatest sources of pleasure. Like kids in a candy shop, fans of sugar (and aren't we all?) will enjoy perusing the wondrous variety to be found in this volume.

Book excerpt: 11 August 2000-I found out that Chicago was the right place for me. I was prayed over again, and it was unanimous that I should go there. 18 August-I arrived in Chicago three days ago, and as soon as I got there, they put all of us to work. I really didn't want to do this. 20 August-I'm having second thoughts about this whole thing...I haven't felt the Spirit yet. It is very hard for me to lie to myself and especially to the people of Bloomingdale. If I don't know for sure what I teach is true, why would I tell a stranger it is? No matter their background, most people find themselves asking such questions as: Where did I come from, why am I here, and where am I going? In God is Chicago, author Joe Scott uses his personal journal entries to invite readers into his two-year volunteer ministry throughout the Chicago area with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as he tries to answer those questions for himself. Answers come in unexpected ways, and it just so happens that for Joe Scott, God is Chicago.

Book excerpt: "Bittersweet is a compelling first novel about love, war, family and one woman's life of great hardship and even greater triumph." "From the last days of the warlords to the tragedy of Tiananmen Square, it is in essence the 100-year odyssey of Bittersweet, a headstrong peasant woman who rises from poverty and endures abandonment, patriarchy, and revolution as the wife of the second most powerful man in China. This gripping story was inspired by the lives of the author's grandfather, the first democratically elected Vice President of China and subsequently acting president, and her grandmother, a woman you won't soon forget." "Unmarried at nineteen and tormented by her jealous sister-in-law, Bittersweet defies custom and arranges her own marriage to an officer in China's newly formed republican army, whose favorable destiny, a soothsayer insists, matches Bittersweet's own. As her husband Delin's star rises with victory in battle, Bittersweet's star ascends along with it, and when she gives birth to their son her position is assured." "But while her husband fights enemies on the battlefield, and the deception of his envious commander-in-chief, Chiang Kai-shek, uncertainty of a different stripe intrudes upon Bittersweet's already unsettled life in the form of Dejie, her husband's beautiful and arrogant concubine. By skillfully employing the very rules that men have devised to justify their own privileges, Bittersweet gains authority while remaining the picture of a dutiful and obedient wife. She has a single ambition - to see her family safe and together again." "Masterfully written in a subtle yet engaging style, this epic story will hold you spellbound from beginning to end."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: The go-to guide to understand and unpack shame: what it is, why we feel it, and how to undo the lies it tells us about ourselves. Are you ready to get Discomfortable? This is a book about shame: what it is, why we have it, and how we can break its hold on our happiness. We all know shame: it's that feeling that tells us that somehow, who we are is inherently wrong. It's more than embarrassment or regret: it shakes us to the core. And most of all, it tells us that we need to be, feel, and act differently in order to be seen, loved, and accepted. Author and "shame-ed" coach AJ Bond takes us through his own shame breakthrough, sharing how he went from I'd rather die than be gay to uncovering and reclaiming his inherent wholeness and worth. With unexpected humor, warmth, and candid personal stories, Bond shows readers: Why shame shows up--the trauma, fixed mindsets, and messaging that give it a foothold How shame tricks you into believing there's something wrong with you, even when you're perfectly right The evolutionary reasons we humans developed a sense of shame (and why it doesn't serve us today) How to manage and deprogram shame through connection, gratitude, and empowered choice How we can re-parent ourselves, be fully seen, and feel fully loved Bond shines a light on this feeling that doesn't want to be seen, heard, or named--and invites us to bring our own shame into the open and release it to reclaim and reframe our lives in a powerful new way.

Jesus’ beautiful and terrible death on the cross is central to the story of that scarlet thread, but there is more to the story. To understand the scarlet thread fully, we must look at the sanctuary: the holy ground that offers a glimpse of God’s character and His plan of redemption. Mysterious and often misunderstood, the sanctuary is at the very heart of biblical theology. Where God and I Meet will help you achieve greater understanding of the heavenly sanctuary, the Israelite sanctuary, the pre-Advent judgment, and Christ’s sacrifice and high-priestly ministry. You’ll come to grasp how the sanctuary interconnects with salvation, prophecy, and mission. But most important, you will see how the precious scarlet thread weaves a message of hope and redemption throughout every page of the Bible.

Now, I’m just lost. Maybe they can help find me, I don’t know. Maybe I shouldn’t be found. Maybe the devastation that is my life should be allowed to crumble and decay. There is no comfort in a funeral dirge, no solace in empty words spoken to me. There is no release from this hell but death, and I can’t do that yet. I don’t know how to let go. But…maybe they can help me hold on. --- Solace (Book 2) He doesn’t know how to give in… I’m in way over my head. I’m waiting for someone to point a finger at me and call me an imposter. I don’t belong here. Yet I can’t think of anywhere I’d rather be. I don’t know what the hell this is between us, but even while I hate it, I crave it, like a damn drug. I need it. I need them. And I’ll do whatever it takes to stay here, even if it means giving up who I am. --- Release (Book 3) She doesn’t know how to give up… Off-limits. Boss. Married. But now… The excuses are gone, and the gloves are off. Except there’s a jungle of pain to carve through first, and I don’t know if I’m strong enough. All I know is I’m willing to try, if they are. I suspect if we can make it through to the other side that we’ll be unstoppable. It’s the journey that’s a bitch, though. So buckle up, buttercup. It’s going to be a wild ride. The Devastation Trilogy is a no-holds-barred political romance set in the world of the Governor Trilogy series and can be read independently from that series. It contains a MMF pairing, including crossed swords, and features power exchange dynamics, older main characters, an age-gap romance, gay-for-you that surprises both of them, some FemDom action but mostly MaleDom, a secret workplace romance that could shatter all three of their political careers and end a governorship, old secrets, new secrets, survival after unspeakable tragedy, panty-dropping desktop shenanigans, two Dominants using their shared subby as a (willing) chew toy, second chances at happiness, and a satisfying HEA. George Forrester's character was first introduced in Lieutenant (Governor Trilogy 2) but you do not have to read that book to enjoy this trilogy.
