Book Synopsis The Seven Military Classics Of Ancient China by : Ralph D. Sawyer
Download or read book The Seven Military Classics Of Ancient China written by Ralph D. Sawyer and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seven Military Classics is one of the most profound studies of warfare ever written, a stanchion in sinological and military history. It presents an Eastern tradition of strategic thought that emphasizes outwitting one's opponent through speed, stealth, flexibility, and a minimum of force -- an approach very different from that stressed in the West. Safeguarded for centuries by the ruling elite of imperial China, even in modern times these writings have been known only to a handful of Western specialists. This volume contains seven separate essays, written between 500 BCE and 700 CE, that preserve the essential tenets of strategy distilled from the experience of the most brilliant warriors of ancient China.

Download or read book The Chinese Revolution (Classic Reprint) written by Arthur Judson Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chinese Revolution A new China is emerging. Whatever may be the immediate developments, however short or long the process of readjustment, We cannot doubt the outcome. This book is not, of course, intended to be a final account of either the process or the result, but an aid to the study of the large out standing causes and of their operation thus far. These causes are clear, and a knowledge of them is indispensable to an understanding of the extra ordinary significance of the reconstruction which is now taking place. I have used some parts of my former and larger book, New Forces in Old China, which are applicable to present conditions and the scope of this little book - the publishers, The Fleming H. Revell Company, having given their approval. This material, however, has been readjusted, wherever necessary, and brought down to date. Considerable new matter has been added, so that this book is intended to be a separate one representing the present situation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China of the Chinese The above general plan, with its broad outlines, represents neither the popular nor the academical method of viewing Chinese history. The former pictures a misty past, in which figures of the great Patriarchs and great Sages, the Builder Of the Great Wall and Burner of Books, with here and there a chivalrous hero, are dimly discerned, and later epochs, of which the knowledge is also misty, known as Augustan Ages of Chinese literature and poetry, all of which are completely overshadowed by the modern periods of foreign intercourse and foreign wars, openings for trade and robbing of territory which, though of historical value, are accorded too large a space in the picture to constitute it a properly proportioned representation of the whole of Chinese history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Avery Collection of Ancient Chinese Coloisonnes Again, we find, both in porcelain and in cloisonne, that same general point of view which recognizes the Ming period as the greatest, and its pieces as being the rarest and the most important; while the K'ang-hsi era is only a grade less important, when pieces of the very highest qual ity are compared, and often in other cases quite equal to the Ming. In cloisonnes, as in porcelains, the Ch'ien-lung era, which is the last of the great historic periods, is distinguished for technical excellence of execu tion, but its best pieces are those which approach most nearly to the color schemes and low-toned harmonies of the older dates (and this they appear to do more often in cloisonne than in porcelain) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In the Book of the Anterior Han (chap. Xxx.) we read, The ancient text of the Shangshu was brought from the wall of Confucius' house. At the end of the reign of the Emperor Wu, king Kung of Lu state pulled down the wall of Confucius' house with the intention of enlarging his own palace, and found therein the ancient text of the Shangshu, the Book of Rites, ' the 'discourses, ' and the F ilial Piety' classic - several tens of chapters - all written in the ancient text. When king Kung entered the house he heard the music of drums, lutes, harps, bells, and musical stones; so, being frightened, he stopped the work of destruction. K'ung An-kuo, who was a descendant of Confucius, secured all these chapters of the Shu king, and used them for his examination of the (other) twenty-nine Chapters; he also found Sixteen more chapters. K'ung Ankuo presented them to the emperor, but as the sorcery affair occurred at that time (b.c. They were not included in the Imperial Library catalogue.
