Download or read book Made in USA written by Andrew J. Theising and published by Virginia Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first ever comprehensive history of this troubled city, the book includes more than 250 photographs amd images of the people and events that shaped East St. Louis. Andrew Theising, a professor of political science at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, examines the city's past from the prominent role it played in the growth of 19th century industrial America to its presently depleted state. For Theising, East St. Louis is more than just a river city suburb; it is an example of industry creating and then abandoning a city, and it is also one of the most misunderstood cities in America.

Download or read book East St. Louis written by Lee A Drake and published by Page Publishing, Incorporated. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East St. Louis, Illinois had, and still has, a very colorful history. Since the 1970's there has been a steady decline of this city, in the shadow of the Gateway Arch. After returning from Viet Nam at the end of 1970, the author found himself working at City Hall in East St. Louis, a place where he had been raised. This coincided with the election of the first Black mayor for the city. He had friends and relatives in all parts of the city. He knew the streets, alleys, and playgrounds from hanging out in those places during his childhood. During his employment in the city's government, there was a loss of control of millions of dollars of federal funds. The actions of certain people in the city's government contributed to this loss for control. The loss of its Prime Sponsorship designation made it impossible for the city to provide jobs and job training for many people depending on the funds to live. This account describes some of the actions during that period that led to the loss of its Prime Sponsorship. It will allow the reader some background as to why East St. Louis is a mere shell of its former glory.

Download or read book Saint Louis written by L. U. Reavis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Louis: The Future Great City of the World I also remember that I am in the city of St. Louis destined, ere long, to be the greatest city on the continent (renewed cheers) the greatest central point between the East and the West, at once destined to be the entrepot and depot of all the internal commerce of the greatest and most prosperous country the world has ever seen; connected soon With India by the Pacific, and receiving the goods of China and Japan; draining, with its immense rivers centering here, the great Northwest, and Opening into the Gulf through the great river of this nation, the Father of Waters - the Mississippi. Whenever - and that time is not far distant the internal commerce shall exceed our foreign commerce, then shall St Louis take the very first rank among the cities of the nation. And that time, my friends, is much sooner than any one of us at the present time actually realizes. Suppose that it had been told to you any one of you here present, of middle age - within twenty years past, that within that time such a city should grow up here, with such a population as covers the teeming prairies of Illinois and Indiana, between this and the Ohio, who would have realized the prediction? And so the next quarter of a century shall see a larger population west of the Mississippi than the last quarter of a century saw east of the Mississippi and the city of St. Louis, from its central location, and through the vigor, the energy, the industry, and the enterprise Of its inhabitants, shall become the very first city of the United States of America, now and hereafter destined to be the great republican nation of the world. Book excerpt: The autobiography of the celebrated African American writer and civil rights activist Published just four years before his death in 1938, James Weldon Johnson's autobiography is a fascinating portrait of an African American who broke the racial divide at a time when the Harlem Renaissance had not yet begun to usher in the civil rights movement. Not only an educator, lawyer, and diplomat, Johnson was also one of the most revered leaders of his time, going on to serve as the first black president of the NAACP (which had previously been run only by whites), as well as write the groundbreaking novel The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man. Beginning with his birth in Jacksonville, Florida, and detailing his education, his role in the Harlem Renaissance, and his later years as a professor and civil rights reformer, Along This Way is an inspiring classic of African American literature. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines.
