Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Preserving and Bird Mounting The best time for preserving specimens is in spring, because then the cock birds are in the best feather, and the weather is not too warm. In mild weather three days is a good time to keep a bird, as then the skin will part from the flesh easily. If a specimen has bled much over the feathers, so as to damage them, wash them carefully but thoroughly with warm water and a sponge, and immediately cover them with pounded whitening, which will adhere to them. Dry it as it hangs upon them slowly before the fire, and then triturating the hardened lumps gently between the fingers, the feathers will come out almost as clean as ever. To test whether the Specimen is too decom posed to skin, try the feathers about the auriculars, and just above the tail, and if they do not move you may safely proceed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on Preserving and Mounting Birds This little handbook is expressly intended to serve as guide for the amateur bird collector, desirous of preserving and mounting his own specimens. In these days of ultra-civilization, when it has become the fashion in some quarters to scoff at the idea of bird-collecting, a book on bird-preserving will not unlikely be received with some misgiving; and if any apology is needed for the appearance of the present volume, let it be that in spite of the abuse that has been showered upon the bird collector in recent years, he still flourishes in most parts of the country, and moreover, is likely to continue so long as the sporting elements inherent in every healthy British boy endure; for after all, it is, as Mr. E. C. Arnold has remarked, out of the schoolboy and his catapult in most instances that the great naturalist is eventually evolved. Happily for Britain, the old sporting spirit, which has done so much to establish the race in its present position amongst the nations of the earth is still strong at home, and shows no signs of abating. Looked at from any angle, the wholesale slaughter of birds must be condemned by every thoughtful man, and all good sportsmen involuntarily recoil in disgust from a record of butchery, miscalled sport. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Taxidermy: A Complete Guide in Collecting and Preserving Birds and Mammals Possibly the political troubles in which our country was involved had something to do with the great ornithological depression which fell upon the pop ular mind. Strange as it may appear, however, for a period of thirty years after the completion of Audubon's great work, not a general popular work of any kind was written on birds in America. Then appeared Samuels' Birds of New England, pub lished in 1867, a work which apparently did much toward turning the popular tide in favor of orni thological study, for from that time we can perceive a general awakening. Not only did the newspa pers and magazines teem with articles on birds, but in the five succeeding years we find three impor tant works on American ornithology announced as about to appear: Baird, Brewer, and Ridgeway's History of American Birds, of which three vol umes have appeared, published in 1874; May nard's Birds of Florida, issued in parts, but af terwards merged into the Birds of Eastern North America, completed in 1882, and Goues' Key. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Taxidermy: A Complete Guide in Collecting and Preserving Birds and Mammals Twenty-five or thirty years ago amateur collectors of birds were rare; in fact, excepting in the immediate vicinity of large cities, individuals who spent their leisure time in gathering birds for the sole purpose of study, were so seldom met with that, when one did occur, his occupation was so unusual as to excite the comments of his neighbors, and he became famous for miles around as highly eccentric. Such a man was regarded as harmless, but as just a little "cracked," and the lower classes gazed at him with open-mouthed wonder as he pursued his avocations; while the more educated of his fellows regarded him with a kind of placid contempt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Taxidermy, or the Art of Collecting, Preparing, and Mounting Objects of Natural History: For the Use of Museums and Travellers Some persons struck by the appearance of these animals, tried to 'skin indigenous birds, and to mount them. They succeeded indifferently; the body was too forward, and the thighs came be yond the rump. It may be well to observe, that this fault always happens to those who mount a bird for the first time, even if they have received proper instructions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Attract and Protect Wild Birds The following pages form an admirable treatise, not only on bird protection, but more than that, on bird preservation. Game birds have long been carefully preserved by means of a close season, by the destruction of their enemies, the provision of plantations and coverts for nesting and shelter, and by feeding. The Baron von Berlepsch has applied the system of game preservation to all useful birds, and his methods, as recorded in this book, are convincing by reason of their very thoroughness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Correspondence Course: Lessons 4-10, How to Mount Birds You have practiced your former lessons and have attained some proficiency in skinning and are now ready to turn your attention to learning how mount your birds. Before proceeding yot: do well to place in a handy place excelsior, tow, some clay, hat-pins, long and short, a ball of twine, arsenic and wire. The matter of wire is all important. Too large a wire will make your birds' legs bulgy if it does not break the skin, and too light a wire will make it flimsy By reference to the wire table you can easily discover the kind of wire needed for each bird.
