Book excerpt: The hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria, is an important commercial, recreational and ecological inhabitant of coastal bays along the east and gulf coasts of the United States. This title represents the first state of the art summary of existing knowledge of the hard clam by experts in various disciplines. Containing a compendium of literature on the hard clam, comprehensive chapters on various aspects of its biology as well as summaries of knowledge including the gray literature on this economically important species, this volume represents a comprehensive source of biological information for managers and researchers interested in shallow marine and estuarine ecosystems. Research students and managers charged with maintaining coastal ecosystems will also find a wealth of background material. The first synthesis of available information on the mercenaria mercenaria, this title is a response to the needs of individuals involved in hard clam aquaculture and scientists interested in molluscan biology, coastal ocean ecology and similar fields. Over 2300 documents have been synthesized, and chapter authors have added unpublished information as well as new material.

Download or read book Nonnative Oysters in the Chesapeake Bay written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-03-09 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonnative Oysters in the Chesapeake Bay discusses the proposed plan to offset the dramatic decline in the bay's native oysters by introducing disease-resistant reproductive Suminoe oysters from Asia. It suggests this move should be delayed until more is known about the environmental risks, even though carefully regulated cultivation of sterile Asian oysters in contained areas could help the local industry and researchers. It is also noted that even though these oysters eat the excess algae caused by pollution, it could take decades before there are enough of them to improve water quality.

Book Synopsis The Abundance and Distribution of Hard Clams in Nantucket Sound, Massachusetts, 1958 by : John W. Ropes
Download or read book The Abundance and Distribution of Hard Clams in Nantucket Sound, Massachusetts, 1958 written by John W. Ropes and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey was made during the summer of 1958 to assess the abundance of hard clams, Venus (Mercenaria) mercenaria, in Nantucket Sound, Massachusetts. A jet (hydraulic) dredge was used as the principal sampling gear. Data from 214 sample stations compared with other Atlantic coast areas indicated that the abundance of hard clams in Nantucket Sound was extremely low. The survey revealed no new general areas of commercial abundance. No clams less than 60 millimeters (2 3/8 inches) were caught. Because of hydrographic conditions unfavorable for spawning and setting and because there are few small clams to augment the present stocks, the future of this fishery is uncertain.
Book Synopsis Clam Mariculture in North America by : John J. Manzi
Download or read book Clam Mariculture in North America written by John J. Manzi and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 1989 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. Clams have been harvested along the coasts of North America for as long as records have been kept. They support commercial, sport and subsistence fisheries although unfortunately, with few exceptions, the harvest of these invertebrates is declining. This decline is probably caused by a number of factors including pollution and overfishing. In an effort to ameliorate this situation, interest in the aquaculture of these species has grown.Intensive semi-controlled clam culture has been attempted in North America for almost three decades. However, it was not until the last decade that a number of entrepreneurs actually began clam farming and developing successful and profitable operations. This success has been possible because of numerous scientific and practical contributions made by a great number of scientists, growers, and clammers over the years, and by a healthy market demand caused by a downward trend in the wild harvest. Many of the
