Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in an increasingly fragmented world, with islands of natural habitat cast adrift in a sea of cleared, burned, logged, polluted, and otherwise altered lands. Nowhere are fragmentation and its devastating effects more evident than in the tropical forests. By the year 2000, more than half of these forests will have been cut, causing increased soil erosion, watershed destabilization, climate degradation, and extinction of as many as 600,000 species. Tropical Forest Remnants provides the best information available to help us understand, manage, and conserve the remaining fragments. Covering geographic areas from Southeast Asia and Australia to Madagascar and the New World, this volume summarizes what is known about the ecology, management, restoration, socioeconomics, and conservation of fragmented forests. Thirty-three papers present results of recent research as well as updates from decades-long projects in progress. Two final chapters synthesize the state of research on tropical forest fragmentation and identify key priorities for future work.

Book Synopsis Dynamics of Tree Biomass, Species Diversity, and Composition in a Long-term Amazonian Forest Fragmentation Experiment by : Chloé Debyser

This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tropical forest fragmentation is a widespread phenomenon worldwide which triggers rapid changes in forest ecology and functioning, including collapses in tree biomass within a few years of the disturbance. However, analyses of the long-term legacy of forest fragmentation are lacking. Here, we ask: Do the biomass and composition of tropical tree communities recover from forest fragmentation, in the three decades following the disturbance? We analysed tree monitoring data collected between 1980 and 2009 at the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP), a long-term and large-scale forest fragmentation experiment located in the Brazilian Amazon. This included diameter at breast height (DBH) measurements for all trees with DBH≥10cm within 68 BDFFP permanent forest plots, at 4-8 time-points in the three decades following experimental fragmentation. We converted DBH values to aboveground dry biomass estimates using three allometric models for Amazonian terra firme forests: a model each for 1) Urticaceae species, 2) abundant pioneer genera, and 3) all other trees. Additive and linear mixed models enabled us to characterize the long-term biomass and community composition dynamics of BDFFP plots. Our results corroborate previous findings of an important biomass loss in several BDFFP forest fragments in the first decade following the disturbance. Fragment area was the most parsimonious predictor of these biomass dynamics, performing better than edge-related predictors such as the presence of one or multiple nearby edges, or distance to the edge. Surprisingly, we also detect a full biomass recovery of 10ha and 1ha forest fragments, starting 14.5 years after the disturbance in 1ha fragments. Biomass trends of plots located in 100ha forest fragments were no different, on average, from that of controls. However, the tree community composition of plots having experienced the greatest biomass losses (namely a biomass collapse ≥40 Mg/ha) remained significantly different from that of other plots up to >25 years after the disturbance. Collapse plots presented a shift towards smaller and earlier-successional stems, and their species composition exhibited greater divergences from their pre-treatment compositions compared to non-collapse plots. Moreover, increases in tree density in collapse plots triggered gains in per hectare species richness, though species-individual ratios were unchanged. Our results suggest a nuanced outlook on the long-term recovery of fragmented Amazonian forests, with the potential for a full biomass recovery despite greater limits on compositional recovery. We hypothesize that biomass recovery at the BDFFP was made possible by the landscape context and management of the site, including the lack of other anthropogenic disturbances, the progressive sealing of edges, and the nearby presence of large forest remnants. Determining the conditions of recovery in fragmented forests is a critical avenue for future research. Our results demonstrate the conservation value of fragmented forests and highlight the necessity for action designed to facilitate their recovery." --
Book Synopsis Lessons from Amazonia by : Richard O. Bierregaard
Download or read book Lessons from Amazonia written by Richard O. Bierregaard and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-11 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deforestation is occurring at an alarming rate in many parts of the world, causing destruction of natural habitat and fragmentation of what remains. Nowhere is this problem more pressing than in the Amazon rainforest, which is rapidly vanishing in the face of enormous pressure from humans to exploit it. This book presents the results of the longest-running and most comprehensive study of forest fragmentation ever undertaken, the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP) in central Amazonia, the only experimental study of tropical forest fragmentation in which baseline data are available before isolation from continuous forest took place.A joint project of Brazil’s National Institute for Research in Amazonia and the U.S. Smithsonian Institution, the BDFFP has investigated the many effects that habitat fragmentation has on plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates. The book provides an overview of the BDFFP, reports on its case studies, looks at forest ecology and tree genetics, and considers what issues are involved in establishing conservation and management guidelines.

Book Synopsis Essentials of Landscape Ecology by : Kimberly A. With
Download or read book Essentials of Landscape Ecology written by Kimberly A. With and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019-07 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human activity during the Anthropocene has transformed landscapes worldwide on a scale that rivals or exceeds even the largest of natural forces. Landscape ecology has emerged as a science to investigate the interactions between natural and anthropogenic landscapes and ecological processes across a wide range of scales and systems: from the effects of habitat or resource distributions on the individual movements, gene flow, and population dynamics of plants and animals; to the human alteration of landscapes affecting the structure of biological communities and the functioning of entire ecosystems; to the sustainable management of natural resources and the ecosystem goods and services upon which society depends. This novel and comprehensive text presents the principles, theory, methods, and applications of landscape ecology in an engaging and accessible format that is supplemented by numerous examples and case studies from a variety of systems, including freshwater and marine "scapes."
