Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important writings on the psychoanalytic understandings and treatments of drug and vice addiction Drug abuse, alcoholism, compulsive gambling, and other destructive addictions plague our society. Theories of addiction locate its cause variously—in factors related to the substance, the addict's personality, or to the addict's environment. Arguments about effective treatment programs are fierce. Essential Papers on Addiction presents the most important writing and the various sides of the debate on the psychoanalytic understanding and treatment of addiction. Daniel Yalisove outlines the history of the treatment of addiction and introduces important psychoanalytic concepts used in understanding addicts. The book includes case studies which illustrate the course of addiction and presents the work of the most influential theorists in the field. Divided into eight sections focusing on historical work on addiction, psychoanalytic theories of addiction, transference and countertransference issues in treating addiction, psychoanalytic treatment for the addictions, psychoanalytic therapy and disease concepts, and psychiatric illness and addiction, this definitive volume includes contributions by the most experienced and renowned experts on the subject. Contributors include S. Freud, E. Glover, S. Rado, R. P. Knight, L. Wurmser, N. E. Zinberg, H. Krystal, D. Jacobs, R. Fine, J. Gustafson, C. L. Brown, M. L. Selzer, V. Davidson, J. Imhof, R. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is dedicated to the faith that the future will offer hard quantitative measures of the human thought process and affect-emotional system. The symposium from which this volume issues was an opportunity for us to invite a number of our friends to help in collecting some of the current contributions to this belief. The participants and topics weave a mosaic of the future. The selection was made in an attempt to project into the future what is most important in the present and in the relatively recent past in terms of generating hard data of the elusive cognitive-affect systems. We regret, because of editorial constraints, that we have not been able to include some of the outstanding contributions offered by our various chairmen. In particular, we are sorry that this volume does not reflect the thoughts of Robert Williams, R.J. Ellingson, William Fields, and especially those of our esteemed grand marshal, W. Grey Walter. This volume deals initially with the electroencephalographic measure ment of sleep profiles as such profiles may be used to measure the stresses of special environments and special patient populations. Of particular interest is the correlation of sleep profiles with basic endocrine functions. We expect the measurement of sleep profiles to become more of a routine clinical examination in the next few years, as our understanding of this fascinating state of consciousness increases in terms of how it is influenced by real life stresses and disease processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an effort to integrate some clinical observations, theoretical concepts, and promising clinical procedures that relate psychological variables to physiological variables. My primary emphasis is on what psychological and behavioral concepts and procedures are most likely to enable us to influence physiological functions. The book covers ques tions that have fascinated me and with which I have struggled in daily clinical practice. What types of people are most at risk for physical disor ders or dysfunctions? Why do some people present psychosocial con flicts somatically and others behaviorally? What is the placebo effect and how does it work? How do you arrange the conditions to alter maladap tive belief systems that contribute to psychopathology and patho physiology? Do beliefs have biological consequences? When I was in private clinical practice, and even today in my medi cal school clinical practice situation, I set aside one day each week to puzzle over the theoretical questions that my clinical experience gener ates. Often isolating these underlying theoretical questions provides guidance into the most relevant empirical literature. I have found that this weekly ritual, which I started in private practice many years ago, appears to increase my clinical efficacy or at least makes clinical work more exciting. I find the unexamined clinical practice hard to endure. Kurt Lewin once said, "There is nothing so practical as a good theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, originally published in 1979, sponsored by the Psychonomic Society (the North American association of research psychologists), commemorates the centennial of experimental psychology as a separate discipline – dated from the opening of Wilhelm Wundt’s laboratory at Leipzig in 1879. Each major research area is surveyed by distinguished experts, and the chapters treat historical background and progress, experimental findings and methods, critical theoretical issues, evaluations of the current state of the art, future prospects, and even practical and social relevance of the work. Writing in a lively style suitable for non-specialists, the authors provide a general introduction to the history of experimental psychology. Illustrated by many photographs of leading historical figures, this book blends history with methodology, findings with theory, and discussion of specific topics with integrated assessments of what has truly been accomplished in the first hundred years of experimental psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents attitudes, information, and tools for a holistic approach to medicine, health, and mental health. In our discussions among ourselves and with the contributing authors we defined three aspects of a holistic approach. First, such an approach involves expanding our focus to include the many personal, familial, social, and environmental factors that promote health, prevent illness, and encourage healing. Second, a holistic approach views the patient as an individual person, not as a symptom-bearing organism. This attitude emphasizes the self-responsibility of the person for his or her health and the importance of mobilizing the person's own health capacities, rather than treating illness only from the outside. Third, the holistic approach tries to make wise use of the many diagnostic, treatment, and health modalities that are available in addition to the standard materia medica- including alternative medical and healing systems as well as psychological techniques and physical modalities. Some of these methods of treatment and health practices are already accepted, others are accepted but not applied in practice, and still others need further research to explore the range of their uses.
