Book excerpt: Introduction to Bioorganic Chemistry and Chemical Biology is the first textbook to blend modern tools of organic chemistry with concepts of biology, physiology, and medicine. With a focus on human cell biology and a problems-driven approach, the text explains the combinatorial architecture of biooligomers (genes, DNA, RNA, proteins, glycans, lipids, and terpenes) as the molecular engine for life. Accentuated by rich illustrations and mechanistic arrow pushing, organic chemistry is used to illuminate the central dogma of molecular biology. Introduction to Bioorganic Chemistry and Chemical Biology is appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in chemistry and molecular biology, as well as those going into medicine and pharmaceutical science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Springer Advanced Texts in Chemistry New textbooks at all levels of chemistry appear with great regularity. Some fields like basic biochemistry, organic reaction mechanisms, and chemical ther modynamics are well represented by many excellent texts, and new or revised editions are published sufficiently often to keep up with progress in research. However, some areas of chemistry, especially many of those taught at the graduate level, suffer from a real lack of up-to-date textbooks. The most serious needs occur in fields that are rapidly changing. Textbooks in these subjects usually have to be written by scientists actually involved in the research which is advancing the field. It is not often easy to persuade such individuals to set time aside to help spread the knowledge they have accumulated. Our goal, in this series, is to pinpoint areas of chemistry where recent progress has outpaced what is covered in any available textbooks, and then seek out and persuade experts in these fields to produce relatively concise but instructive introductions to their fields. These should serve the needs of one semester or one quarter graduate courses in chemistry and biochemistry. In some cases the availability of texts in active research areas should help stimulate the creation of new courses. New York, New York CHARLES R.

Book excerpt: Introducing the application of free energy correlations to elucidating the mechanisms of organic and bio-organic reactions, this book provides a new and illuminating way of approaching a potentially complex topic. The idea of how free energy correlations derive from polar substituent change is introduced, and common pitfalls encountered in the application of free energy relationships are described, along with the use of these anomalies in mechanistic studies. The concept of effective charge is described in detail, with examples of its application. Throughout, worked answers are provided for the problems posed. Databases of parameters, an extensive bibliography and comprehensive lists of further reading are also included. The text provides an invaluable source of information to senior undergraduates, postgraduates and to industrial researchers with an interest in mechanistic studies. It is the first such book in more than thirty years.

Book excerpt: In current thinking, Bioorganic Chemistry may be defined as the area of chemistry which lies in the border region between organic chemistry and biology and which describes and analyzes biological phenomena in terms of detailed molecular structures and molecular mechanisms. This molecular-level view of biological processes is not only essential to their fuller understanding but also serves as the platform for the application of the principles of such processes to areas of health care and technology. The objective of the ASI workshop on " Bioorganic Chemistry in Healthcare and Technology", held in the Hengelhoef Congress Centre in Houthalen-Helchteren, Belgium, from September 18-21, 1990, was to bring together most of the international experts in the field to discuss the current developments and new trends in bioorganic chemistry, especially in relation to the selected theme. The book presents nineteen invited plenary and session lectures and eighteen posters. These cover areas of (i) molecular design of therapeutic and agronomical agents based npon mechanistic rationale or drug-receptor interactions, (ii) production of substances of commercial value via combined organic chemical and bio-chemical methodologies, (iii) fundamental studies on the molecular mechanisms of enzymes and (iv) the evolution of conceptually new molecular systems which are programmed to execute specific recognition and/or catalytic functions. An abstracted version of the plenary discussion held at the end of the workshop is also included. We feel confident that the subject matter of this book will be of interest to a broad group of chemists engaged in academic or industrial research.

Book excerpt: Bio-organic chemistry describes the structure, interactions, and reactions of organic compounds of biological significance at the molecular level. The book represents the interface of biochemistry with organic chemistry. The major focus is on fundamentals of bioorganic chemistry where each chapter gives an in-depth knowledge about the topic, besides covering the chemical/biochemical reactions with special emphasis on mechanistic aspects. General biosynthetic reactions have been outlined and compared with corresponding organic reactions. The detailed information on the chemistry of Enzymes is given in one chapter while the other chapter describes the details of mechanism of enzyme action. The reactions catalysed by enzymes and coenzymes respectively have been described in detail emphasizing on mechanism of these reactions. The chapter on Enzyme Models has been entirely focused on different aspects and types of enzyme models and their applications in chemical, pharmaceutical, food, biochemical and environmental industries. The biotechnological applications of enzymes have been described in the last chapter focusing on immobilized enzyme technology for various industrial uses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of natural catalysts - enzymes - for the transformation of non-natural is not at all new: they have been used for more man-made organic compounds than one hundred years, employed either as whole cells, cell organelles or isolated enzymes [1]. Certainly, the object of most of the early research was totally different from that of the present day. Thus the elucidation of biochemical pathways and enzyme mechanisms was in the foreground of the reasearch some decades ago. It was mainly during the 1980s that the enormous potential of applying natural catalysts to transform non-natural organic compounds was recognized. What started as a trend in the late 1970s could almost be called a fashion in synthetic organic chemistry in the 1990s. Although the early euphoria during the 'gold rush' in this field seems to have eased somewhat, there is still no limit to be seen for the future development of such methods. As a result of this extensive, recent research, there have been an estimated 5000 papers published on the subject [2]. To collate these data as a kind of 'super-review' would clearly be an impossible task and, furthermore, such a hypothetical book would be unpalatable for the non-expert.
