Book excerpt: In the last two decades, interest in the emotions has increased significantly in various disciplines such as psychology, neurobiology, social anthropology, sociology, history, philosophy and linguistics. Although the individual disciplines are studying overlapping issues in relation to emotions, the scientific approaches to these issues have often remained unrelated. This gap is especially obvious between the sciences and the humanities, where cooperative approaches hardly exist. All branches concerned realize that this missing interdisciplinary cooperation is a shortcoming and are thus demanding that the interaction between the disciplines should increase. Debate on emotions is, to a great extent, still governed by dichotomous views; one group regarding the emotions as primarily biological, the other considering them as primarily socio-cultural. Most attempts to theorize emotions tend to reduce them to one side or the other of this traditional nature-nurture opposition, and only a small minority of recent approaches attempt to overcome these forms of reductionism. The editors of this work aim to transcend these dichotomies as well as the disciplinary boundaries that still dominate the study of emotions. Their aim is to develop a theoretical and methodological framework which allows an analysis of emotions as a complex, multi-layered process, in which biological, cultural, social and individual components interact equally. This book gathers researchers from various disciplines, such as neurobiologists, philosophers, sociologists, developmental, physiological and social psychologists as well as social anthropologists, working together to establish an integrative model of emotion research.

In this dichotomy Snow saw no possibility of unification. On the other hand the urge towards self-consistency and harmony in the mental and spiritual lives of both man and society as a whole is clearly one of the major forces of creativity, both scientific and artistic. This force aims at the unification of the «Two Cultures» in order to build an integrated self-consistent system for our intellectual life. Some attempts in this direction have been made before, and will be described in this book. It is our aim to contribute to the achievement of an integrated mental life on the basis of information theory. In order to construct our model, we examine the laws of information theory, leading us to the deduction of the main laws inherent in both «cultures». To counterbalance this and to encourage lively discussions, a conceptual track, where papers were judged on criteria like importance and/or novelty of the concepts proposed rather than the experimental/theoretical results, has been introduced this year. A conference on a theme as broad as Arti?cial Life is bound to be very - verse,but a few tendencies emerged. First, ?elds like ‘Robotics and Autonomous Agents’ or ‘Evolutionary Computation’ are still extremely active and keep on bringing a wealth of results to the A-Life community. Even there, however, new tendencies appear, like collective robotics, and more speci?cally self-assembling robotics, which represent now a large subsection. Second, new areas appear.
