Book Synopsis Bioinspired Superhydrophobic Surfaces by : Frédéric Guittard
Download or read book Bioinspired Superhydrophobic Surfaces written by Frédéric Guittard and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-10-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials with superhydrophobic or related properties are one of the most studied subjects from a theoretical point of view and also for the large range of possible applications, for example, anticorrosion, antibacteria, optical devices, and sensors. The study of natural species with special wettability has shown us the importance of surface structures and the surface energy of the resulting surface properties. Various strategies can be used to reproduce superhydrophobic phenomena in the laboratory. General reviews on superhydrophobic properties already exist but, to our knowledge, do not focus on metallic and inorganic materials. Here, we focus especially on the strategies implemented for reaching superhydrophobic or related properties using metallic and inorganic materials. Indeed, these materials present unique properties, for example, thermal and mechanical resistance, chemical and ageing resistance, and optical (transparency, antireflection, photoluminescence) and electrical properties (conducting, semiconducting, insulating). This book will be useful for graduate students of materials chemistry and physics and for researchers in surface science, nanostructures, and bioinspired or biomimetic materials.

Book Synopsis BIO-INSPIRED, DYNAMIC MICROTOPOGRAPHY SURFACES FOR WETTING CONTROL. by : Seung Won Oh
Download or read book BIO-INSPIRED, DYNAMIC MICROTOPOGRAPHY SURFACES FOR WETTING CONTROL. written by Seung Won Oh and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controlling the wettability of solid surfaces has been a fundamental topic in the realm of surface engineering. Although previous research in this field has examined the connection between wetting properties and static solid surfaces for various surface structures and chemical compositions, few studies have examined how wetting behaviour is affected by dynamic changes in surface structures. In this study, we can dynamically control the wetting properties of superhydrophobic surfaces via microfluidic channels and digitally-controlled pneumatic pressure. We have designed a bio-inspired, multi-layer microfluidic polydimethylsiloxane device with micropillar array surfaces (7.5-10 Âľm diameter) that can be mechanically deformed to dynamically change the pillar spacing (pitch) and orientation. We show that the static contact angle, the adhesion force of droplet, roll-off angle, dynamic control of surface wetting (catch-and-release, direction control, merge-and-mix) and selective transition of wetting state (from Cassie-Baxter to Wenzel) can reliably be influenced by the topographic deformation.
Book Synopsis Wetting and Wettability by : Mahmood Aliofkhazraei
Download or read book Wetting and Wettability written by Mahmood Aliofkhazraei and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the liquid 's surface, the molecules have fewer neighbors in comparison with the bulk volume. As a result, the energy interaction shows itself in the surface tension. Traditionally, the surface tension can be assumed as a force in the unit of the length which can be counted by the unit of Newton on squared meter, or energy on the units of the surface. The surface tension, implies the interface between liquid and vapor, which is an example of the surface tensions. The equilibrium between these surface tensions, decides that a droplet on a solid surface, would have a droplet form or will change to layer form. This book collects new developments in wetting and wettability science.

Book Synopsis Superhydrophobic Surfaces by : Alain Carré
Download or read book Superhydrophobic Surfaces written by Alain Carré and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-04-24 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superhydrophobic surfaces (water contact angles higher than 150º) can only be achieved by a combination of hydrophobicity (low surface energy materials) with appropriate surface texture. In nature one can find an array of impressive and elegant examples of superhydrophobic surfaces. For example, on a lotus leaf rain drops bounce off after impact, then entirely roll off the lotus leaf and drag along any dirt particles, without leaving residues. The artificial design of superhydrophobic and self-cleaning surfaces has become an extremely active area of fundamental and applied research. This book presents both fundamental and applied aspects of superhydrophobic surfaces. It describes also different strategies for making superhydrophobic surfaces from a large diversity of materials (polymers, metals and other inorganic materials, composites) and processes (lithographic techniques, electrochemical processes, self-assembly processes, colloidal particles, sol-gel processes, nanofilaments, or simple scraping).A bountiful of information is covered in this book which represents cumulative wisdom of many world-renowned researchers in the fascinating and burgeoning area of superhydrophobic surfaces.
