Maybe you learned to sew in school and have a sewing machine, but it hasn't seen the outside of the closet since your last move. Or maybe you are completely new to the craft, with a lot of enthusiasm, but no idea how to thread your machine. No matter where you're coming from in terms of experience, this sewing workbook offers four basic patterns--two tops, a skirt, and a pair of pants--that empower you to express your personal style and make clothes that are comfortable for your body type. After explaining the basic concepts of sewing and construction, 100 Acts of Sewing designer Sonya Philip then provides suggestions for mixing the basic patterns together to create new garment iterations as you gain confidence--structural adjustments such as full bust, no bust, long torso, big, small, etc., as well as a range of possible alterations and embellishments including sleeves, pockets, hems, and more! Going beyond simple pattern instructions, this book will make sewing garments accessible for every body type--each pattern comes in sizes ranging from XS to 5X. With inspiring essays on Sonya's sewing philosophy that speak to the slow and ethical fashion movement, this will be the go-to guide for all aspirational and seasoned sewists.

I'm Tiffany and my four daughters and I love making baby blankets for our friends and family - a tradition that has been passed down through my family for generations. The collection we have put together in this book are 25 of our most popular baby blanket patterns from the Daisy Farm Crafts website. Our patterns have been shared on Pinterest millions of times and many hands have now made Daisy Farm Crafts baby blankets to celebrate and welcome their new ones into the world. I'm happy the patterns will now be in book form and we hope you have as much fun making them as we did! We use US crochet terms and easy to read explanations of the patterns. If we do use an abbreviation, we explain what it stands for. You can also find video tutorials for most of the patterns in the book if you need help. We love seeing what you make! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Rose explores her myriad inspirations in this collection of twenty-five fashionable knitting projects that show the potential in beautiful yarn . . . marvelous.” —Library Journal Cirilia Rose is the epitome of the new knitwear designer—young, educated, curious, and excited to share her passion for all ideas knit and purl. Her attitude toward curating her own collection of designs is informed as much by travel, cultural history, and tried-and-true sourcebooks as it is by modern media and technology. In Magpies, Homebodies, and Nomads, Rose takes readers behind the scenes of her design process, showing them how she curates and organizes ideas and translates them into knitwear designs. Through twenty-five projects that fall into three categories—Magpies (accessories for the small amounts of precious yarns that knitters inevitably collect), Homebodies (garments for time spent close to home), and Nomads (garments to wear when venturing out into the world)—Rose shares her modern aesthetic and invites readers to develop their own. “So not only do we have twenty-five patterns—many of them timeless and some of them quirky—we also have a lot of attentive commentary on color selection, styling tips, and useful info on substituting yarns. This is one new book that I would highly recommend. Not only for the patterns, but especially for the spirit of the book and the thoughtful way Cirilia Rose approaches her knitting and explains her process.” —Knit and Tonic “This is a gem of a book.” —Kangath Knits “This latitude that Rose has given herself to combine disparate elements makes all her designs fresh, hip and youthful.” —My Central Jersey

Book Synopsis Pattern Grammar by : Susan Hunston

Download or read book Pattern Grammar written by Susan Hunston and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes an approach to lexis and grammar based on the concept of phraseology and of language patterning arising from work on large corpora. The notion of 'pattern' as a systematic way of dealing with the interface between lexis and grammar was used in Collins Cobuild English Dictionary (1995) and in the two books in the Collins Cobuild Grammar Patterns series (1996; 1998). This volume describes the research that led to these publications, and explores the theoretical and practical implications of the research. The first chapter sets the work in the context of work on phraseology. The next two chapters give several examples of patterns and how they are identified. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss and exemplify the association of pattern and meaning. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 relate the concept of pattern to traditional approaches to grammar and to discourse. Chapter 9 summarizes the book and adds to the theoretical discussion, as well as indicating the applications of this approach to language teaching. The volume is intended to contribute to the current debate concerning how corpora challenge existing linguistic theories, and as such will be of interest to researchers in the fields of grammar, lexis, discourse and corpus linguistics. It is written in an accessible style, however, and will be equally suitable for students taking courses in those areas.
