Book Synopsis Novel Into Film by : Patricia J. Santoro
Download or read book Novel Into Film written by Patricia J. Santoro and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The United States has come to know Spain, its people, and its land through its literature and, more recently, through the international distribution of many of its films. This analysis aims to probe the creative Spanish soul in greater depth through the particular prism of the cinematic adaptation." "The analysis of the Spanish novels La familia de Pascual Duarte and Los santos inocentes and their cinematic adaptations Pascual Duarte (1975) and Los santos inocentes (1984) is based on the intersection of literary and cinematic theory." "The first chapter of this study summarizes various theories whose integration forms a basis for the analysis of the cinematic adaptation. Structuralism, semiotics, deconstruction, reader criticism, and Freudian/Lacanian psychology serve both film and literary criticism in their analysis of texts. The theories examined in this chapter are inflected in later chapters into the criticism and analysis of the novels and films in question." "The second chapter provides general background information on agrarian Spain - the historical, economic, and ideological context of both La familia de Pascual Duarte and Los santos inocentes. While in most cases the texts refer only obliquely to the reigning ideology that is responsible for the plight of the rural worker, the history of the province of Extremadura, where rural poverty is and was a social and economic phenomenon, is crucial to the understanding of all four texts whose stories are set in this province."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The United States alone, with its more than 22 million Hispanic Americans, is now considered by many to be a bilingual society. As the practice of law and the resolution of legal issues, to a great extent, is all about precise communication, the impact of this on legal and business professionals is obvious - Spanish/English, English/Spanish translations are fast becoming an indispensable component of any thriving law practice or business, be it a small company or a multinational corporation. Book Synopsis Flood Risk Assessments by : Andrés Díez-Herrero
Download or read book Flood Risk Assessments written by Andrés Díez-Herrero and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-09 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a considerable volume of technical literature has been published on flood hazard analysis, and more recently, on flood vulnerability and resilience. Nevertheless, there is still a shortage of scientific studies and practical experience of real flood risk assessment (both social and economic), including hazard, exposure and vulnerability analyses and their integration. As there are so few references available, applications of flood risk assessment to the design of preventive measures and early warning systems, landscape and urban planning, civil protection, insurance systems, and risk-based information and education, cannot reach their full potential development. This is because the research products available, such as hazard data and maps, do not serve to ensure the efficient prioritization of mitigation measures or communities at risk. Meanwhile, flooding is the natural disaster that causes the greatest loss on a global scale, and due to climate change, this situation is expected to continue. The research manuscripts involved in this book try to offer flood risk managers new tools, data and maps to improve risk mitigation, both preventive and corrective. A wide variety of topics have been covered, including: flood risk data sources; techniques and methodologies for flood risk analysis; flood risk mapping; or flood risk analysis calibrations.
Download or read book Vita written by João Biehl and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zones of social abandonment are emerging everywhere in Brazil’s big cities—places like Vita, where the unwanted, the mentally ill, the sick, and the homeless are left to die. This haunting, unforgettable story centers on a young woman named Catarina, increasingly paralyzed and said to be mad, living out her time at Vita. Anthropologist João Biehl leads a detective-like journey to know Catarina; to unravel the cryptic, poetic words that are part of the "dictionary" she is compiling; and to trace the complex network of family, medicine, state, and economy in which her abandonment and pathology took form. An instant classic, Vita has been widely acclaimed for its bold fieldwork, theoretical innovation, and literary force. Reflecting on how Catarina’s life story continues, this updated edition offers the reader a powerful new afterword and gripping new photographs following Biehl and Eskerod’s return to Vita. Anthropology at its finest, Vita is essential reading for anyone who is grappling with how to understand the conditions of life, thought, and ethics in the contemporary world.

Book Synopsis Madness in Buenos Aires by : Jonathan Ablard
Download or read book Madness in Buenos Aires written by Jonathan Ablard and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madness in Buenos Aires examines the interactions between psychiatrists, patients and their families, and the national state in modern Argentina. This book offers a fresh interpretation of the Argentine state's relationship to modernity and social change during the twentieth century, while also examining the often contentious place of psychiatry in modern Argentina. Drawing on a number of previously untapped archival sources, author Jonathan Ablard uses the experience of psychiatric patients as a case study of how the Argentine state developed and functioned over the last century and of how Argentines interacted with it. Ablard argues that the capacity of the state to provide social services and professional opportunities and to control the populace was often constrained to an extent not previously recognized in scholarly literature. These limitations, including a shortage of hospitals, insufficient budgets, and political and economic instability, shaped the experiences of patients, their families, and doctors and also influenced medical and lay ideas about the nature and significance of mental illness. Furthermore, these experiences, and the institutional framework in which they were imbedded, had a profound impact on how Argentine psychiatrists discussed not only mental illness but also a host of related themes including immigration, poverty, and the role of the state in mitigating social problems.
