Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a privilege for me to write a foreword for this unusual book. The book is not primarily a reference work although many of the ideas and proofs are explained more clearly here than in any other source that I know. Nor is this a text of the customary sort. It is rather a record of a particular course and Gordon Whyburn's special method of teaching it. Perhaps the easiest way to describe the course and the method is to relate my own personal experience with a forerunner of this same course in the academic year 1937-1938. At that time, the course was offered every other year with a following course in algebraic topology on alternate years. There were five of us enrolled, and on the average we knew less mathematics than is now routinely given in a junior course in analysis. Whyburn's purpose, as we learned, was to prepare us in minimal time for research in the areas in which he was inter ested. His method was remarkable.

Book excerpt: Topological dynamics is the study of transformation groups with respect to those topological properties whose prototype occurred in classical dynamics. In this volume, Part One contains the general theory. Part Two contains notable examples of flows which have contributed to the general theory of topological dynamics and which have in turn have been illuminated by the general theory of topological dynamics.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this work is to prove a theorem for topological entropy analogous to Ornstein's result for measure entropy. For this a natural class of dynamical systems is needed to play the same role for topological entropy as the Bernoulli shifts do for measure entropy. Fortunately there is just such a class--the topological Markov shifts. The main result of this paper is that topological entropy along with another number, called the ergodic period, is a complete set of invariants under this new equivalence relation for the class of topological Markov shifts.

Book excerpt: An extraordinary mathematical conference was held 5-9 August 1990 at the University of California at Berkeley: From Topology to Computation: Unity and Diversity in the Mathematical Sciences An International Research Conference in Honor of Stephen Smale's 60th Birthday The topics of the conference were some of the fields in which Smale has worked: • Differential Topology • Mathematical Economics • Dynamical Systems • Theory of Computation • Nonlinear Functional Analysis • Physical and Biological Applications This book comprises the proceedings of that conference. The goal of the conference was to gather in a single meeting mathemati cians working in the many fields to which Smale has made lasting con tributions. The theme "Unity and Diversity" is enlarged upon in the section entitled "Research Themes and Conference Schedule." The organizers hoped that illuminating connections between seemingly separate mathematical sub jects would emerge from the conference. Since such connections are not easily made in formal mathematical papers, the conference included discussions after each of the historical reviews of Smale's work in different fields. In addition, there was a final panel discussion at the end of the conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex Nonlinearity: Chaos, Phase Transitions, Topology Change and Path Integrals is a book about prediction & control of general nonlinear and chaotic dynamics of high-dimensional complex systems of various physical and non-physical nature and their underpinning geometro-topological change. The book starts with a textbook-like expose on nonlinear dynamics, attractors and chaos, both temporal and spatio-temporal, including modern techniques of chaos–control. Chapter 2 turns to the edge of chaos, in the form of phase transitions (equilibrium and non-equilibrium, oscillatory, fractal and noise-induced), as well as the related field of synergetics. While the natural stage for linear dynamics comprises of flat, Euclidean geometry (with the corresponding calculation tools from linear algebra and analysis), the natural stage for nonlinear dynamics is curved, Riemannian geometry (with the corresponding tools from nonlinear, tensor algebra and analysis). The extreme nonlinearity – chaos – corresponds to the topology change of this curved geometrical stage, usually called configuration manifold. Chapter 3 elaborates on geometry and topology change in relation with complex nonlinearity and chaos. Chapter 4 develops general nonlinear dynamics, continuous and discrete, deterministic and stochastic, in the unique form of path integrals and their action-amplitude formalism. This most natural framework for representing both phase transitions and topology change starts with Feynman’s sum over histories, to be quickly generalized into the sum over geometries and topologies. The last Chapter puts all the previously developed techniques together and presents the unified form of complex nonlinearity. Here we have chaos, phase transitions, geometrical dynamics and topology change, all working together in the form of path integrals. The objective of this book is to provide a serious reader with a serious scientific tool that will enable them to actually perform a competitive research in modern complex nonlinearity. It includes a comprehensive bibliography on the subject and a detailed index. Target readership includes all researchers and students of complex nonlinear systems (in physics, mathematics, engineering, chemistry, biology, psychology, sociology, economics, medicine, etc.), working both in industry/clinics and academia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first systematic treatment of the theory of topological dynamics of random dynamical systems. A relatively new field, the theory of random dynamical systems unites and develops the classical deterministic theory of dynamical systems and probability theory, finding numerous applications in disciplines ranging from physics and biology to engineering, finance and economics. This book presents in detail the solutions to the most fundamental problems of topological dynamics: linearization of nonlinear smooth systems, classification, and structural stability of linear hyperbolic systems. Employing the tools and methods of algebraic ergodic theory, the theory presented in the book has surprisingly beautiful results showing the richness of random dynamical systems as well as giving a gentle generalization of the classical deterministic theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the seventh in the series Collected Papers of John Milnor. Together with the preceding Volume VI, it contains all of Milnor's papers in dynamics, through the year 2012. Most of the papers are in holomorphic dynamics; however, there are two in real dynamics and one on cellular automata. Two of the papers are published here for the first time. The papers in this volume provide important and fundamental material in real and complex dynamical systems. Many have become classics, and have inspired further research in the field. Some of the questions addressed here continue to be important in current research. In some cases, there have been minor corrections or clarifications, as well as references to more recent work which answers questions raised by the author. The volume also includes an index to facilitate searching the book for specific topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This graduate level text explains the fundamentals of the theory of dynamical systems. After reading it you will have a good enough understanding of the area to study the extensive literature on dynamical systems. The book is self contained, as all the essential definitions and proofs are supplied, as are useful references: all the reader needs is a knowledge of basic mathematical analysis, algebra and topology. However, the first chapter contains an explanation of some of the methods of differential topology an understanding of which is essential to the theory of dynamical systems. A clear introduction to the field, which is equally useful for postgraduates in the natural sciences, engineering and economics.

The concepts of laminations and foliations appear in a diverse number of fields, such as topology, geometry, analytic differential equations, holomorphic dynamics, and renormalization theory. Although these areas have developed deep relations, each has developed distinct research fields with little interaction among practitioners. The conference brought together the diverse points of view of researchers from different areas. This book includes surveys and research papers reflecting the broad spectrum of themes presented at the event. Of particular interest are the articles by F. Bonahon, "Geodesic Laminations on Surfaces", and D. Gabai, "Three Lectures on Foliations and Laminations on 3-manifolds", which are based on minicourses that took place during the conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a very readable exposition of the modern theory of topological dynamics and presents diverse applications to such areas as ergodic theory, combinatorial number theory and differential equations. There are three parts: 1) The abstract theory of topological dynamics is discussed, including a comprehensive survey by Furstenberg and Glasner on the work and influence of R. Ellis. Presented in book form for the first time are new topics in the theory of dynamical systems, such as weak almost-periodicity, hidden eigenvalues, a natural family of factors and topological analogues of ergodic decomposition. 2) The power of abstract techniques is demonstrated by giving a very wide range of applications to areas of ergodic theory, combinatorial number theory, random walks on groups and others. 3) Applications to non-autonomous linear differential equations are shown. Exposition on recent results about Floquet theory, bifurcation theory and Lyapanov exponents is given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to several active research topics in Foliation Theory and its connections with other areas. It contains expository lectures showing the diversity of ideas and methods converging in the study of foliations. The lectures by Aziz El Kacimi Alaoui provide an introduction to Foliation Theory with emphasis on examples and transverse structures. Steven Hurder's lectures apply ideas from smooth dynamical systems to develop useful concepts in the study of foliations: limit sets and cycles for leaves, leafwise geodesic flow, transverse exponents, Pesin Theory and hyperbolic, parabolic and elliptic types of foliations. The lectures by Masayuki Asaoka compute the leafwise cohomology of foliations given by actions of Lie groups, and apply it to describe deformation of those actions. In his lectures, Ken Richardson studies the properties of transverse Dirac operators for Riemannian foliations and compact Lie group actions, and explains a recently proved index formula. Besides students and researchers of Foliation Theory, this book will be interesting for mathematicians interested in the applications to foliations of subjects like Topology of Manifolds, Differential Geometry, Dynamics, Cohomology or Global Analysis.
