Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let's face it, the whole subject of Biblical Prosperity and Success is pretty controversial. While there is nothing inherently wrong with having money or possessions, it is certainly true that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Having great fame and possessions is not always a sign of God's favor just as having few possessions is not necessarily a sign of God's judgement. The Book of Hebrews includes a chapter often referred to as The Hall of Faith—a list of people who have gone before us who by faith gained the approval and approbation of God. By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain, Enoch was taken from this life so that he did not experience death, Noah built an ark to save his family, and others conquered kingdoms, administered justice, shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, escaped the edge of the sword; became powerful in battle and received back their dead, raised to life again. Yet other, equally faithful servants of God were tortured for their faith, faced jeers and flogging, chains and imprisonment, were put to death by stoning, were sawed in two, or killed by the sword. They were destitute, persecuted, and mistreated—the world was not worthy of them. Biblical success can be defined as accomplishing the purposes of God in our lives. Biblical prosperity can be viewed as having enough to meet our needs and an overflow to help meet the needs of others. In a world of socialism, communism, capitalism, and every other kind of -ism, the question is not what you have, but what are you going to do with it?

This book explicitly and clearly shows that good success is Biblical and first taught, encouraged, and implemented by God Himself. God is the Author of Success, not man. Dr. Toote dispels the myth that the desire, pursuit, or acquisition of success is unchristian or worldly. This work is a breath of fresh air and provides the Christian a roadmap to experience a balance of spiritual, social, intellectual, financial, and physical success. God’s desire for Believers is to be the head and not the tail, winners and not losers, happy and not despondent, free and not in bondage, healthy and not sickly. God expects His followers to honor Him, serve humankind, and bless all they encounter. Success blesses both the receiver and the giver of success. All readers who apply THE 10 BIBLICAL LAWS OF SUCCESS will experience personal transformation, amazing ideas, maximized potentiality, spiritual growth, purpose realization, abundant blessings, and guaranteed success. A life transformational must read!

Book excerpt: The interpretation of this gospel integrates an objective analysis of its historical context and a subjective semantic disclosure of meaning. To that end, a close reading of the text is combined with consistency building in order to achieve textual congruence and plenitude of meaning. The subject/ object split of traditional biblical scholarship that requires analysis in order to produce explanation as a definable object is superseded in this book by the event of reading as a dynamic happening of personal experience from which the reader cannot detach herself or himself.

Book excerpt: No figure among the western Marxist theoreticians has loomed larger in the postwar period than Louis Althusser. A rebel against the Catholic tradition in which he was raised, Althusser studied philosophy and later joined both the faculty of the Ecole normal superieure and the French Communist Party in 1948. Viewed as a structuralist Marxist, Althusser was as much admired for his independence of intellect as he was for his rigorous defense of Marx. The latter was best illustrated in For Marx (1965), and Reading Capital (1968). These works, along with Lenin and Philosophy (1971) had an enormous influence on the New Left of the 1960s and continues to influence modern Marxist scholarship. This classic work, which to date has sold more than 30,000 copies, covers the range of Louis Althusser's interests and contributions in philosophy, economics, psychology, aesthetics, and political science. Marx, in Althusser's view, was subject in his earlier writings to the ruling ideology of his day. Thus for Althusser, the interpretation of Marx involves a repudiation of all efforts to draw from Marx's early writings a view of Marx as a humanist and historicist. Lenin and Philosophy also contains Althusser's essay on Lenin's study of Hegel; a major essay on the state, Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses, Freud and Lacan: A letter on Art in Reply to Andr Daspre, and Cremonini, Painter of the Abstract. The book opens with a 1968 interview in which Althusser discusses his personal, political, and intellectual history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s most revered and eloquent interpreter of evolutionary ideas offers here a work of explanatory force unprecedented in our time—a landmark publication, both for its historical sweep and for its scientific vision. With characteristic attention to detail, Stephen Jay Gould first describes the content and discusses the history and origins of the three core commitments of classical Darwinism: that natural selection works on organisms, not genes or species; that it is almost exclusively the mechanism of adaptive evolutionary change; and that these changes are incremental, not drastic. Next, he examines the three critiques that currently challenge this classic Darwinian edifice: that selection operates on multiple levels, from the gene to the group; that evolution proceeds by a variety of mechanisms, not just natural selection; and that causes operating at broader scales, including catastrophes, have figured prominently in the course of evolution. Then, in a stunning tour de force that will likely stimulate discussion and debate for decades, Gould proposes his own system for integrating these classical commitments and contemporary critiques into a new structure of evolutionary thought. In 2001 the Library of Congress named Stephen Jay Gould one of America’s eighty-three Living Legends—people who embody the “quintessentially American ideal of individual creativity, conviction, dedication, and exuberance.” Each of these qualities finds full expression in this peerless work, the likes of which the scientific world has not seen—and may not see again—for well over a century.
