It analyzes the biblical passages related to slavery, and shows how they have been distorted and misinterpreted by pro-slavery apologists and infidels alike. Written in a clear and persuasive style, it makes a compelling case for the abolition of slavery on both moral and religious grounds, and has been an inspiration to generations of anti-slavery activists. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Servitude Re-Examined: With Special Reference to Pro-Slavery Interpretations and Infidel Objections As the battle of the Lord Almighty in the contest between truth and error, right and wrong, goes on in the world, different ages and nations will occupy different portions of the field. Some of the ages, and some of the nations, will be thrown upon a mission of experiment and adventure: others will be convulsed with revolutions, bringing destruction to old systems of belief and practice: others, still, will be inspired to the work of repairing the old wastes, organizing, reconstructing, building up. It belongs especially to some of the ages to break up, and put to decay, that which has grown old, done its work, ripened off, and, in its own nature, is ready to vanish away. It is the special mission of some of the ages to discover, to shape, to lay foundations, and to build thereon that which can never be moved. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reimagining Hagar illustrates that while interpretations of Hagar as Black are not frequent within the entire history of her interpretation, such interpretations are part of strategies to emphasize elements of Hagar's story in order to associate or disassociate her from particular groups. It considers how interpreters engage markers of difference, including gender, ethnicity, status and their intersections in their portrayals of Hagar. Nyasha Junior offers a reception history that examines interpretations of Hagar with a focus on interpretations of Hagar as a Black woman. Reception history within biblical studies considers the use, impact, and influence of biblical texts and looks at a necessarily small number of points within the long history of the transmission of biblical texts. This volume covers a limited selection of interpretations over time that is not intended to be a representative sample of interpretations of Hagar. It is beyond the scope of this book to offer a comprehensive collection of interpretations of Hagar throughout the history of biblical interpretation or in popular culture. Junior argues for the African presence in biblical texts; identifies and responds to White supremacist interpretations; offers cultural-historical interpretation that attends to the history of biblical interpretation within Black communities; and provides ideological criticism that uses the African-American context as a reading strategy. Reimagining Hagar offers a history of interpretation, but also expands beyond interpretation among Black communities to consider how various interpreters have identified Hagar as Black.

Book excerpt: This ambitious and ground-breaking book examines the linguistic studies produced by missionaries based on the Pacific Northwest Coast of North America (and particularly Haida Gwaii) during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Making extensive use of unpublished archival materials, the author demonstrates that the missionaries were responsible for introducing many innovative and insightful grammatical analyses. Rather than merely adopting Graeco-Roman models, they drew extensively upon studies of non-European languages, and a careful exploration of their scripture translations reveal the origins of the Haida sociolect that emerged as a result of the missionary activity. The complex interactions between the missionaries and anthropologists are also discussed, and it is shown that the former sometimes anticipated linguistic analyses that are now incorrectly attributed to the latter. Since this book draws upon recent work in theoretical linguistics, religious history, translation studies, and anthropology, it emphasises the unavoidably interdisciplinary nature of Missionary Linguistics research.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dissertation on Servitude: Embracing an Examination of the Scripture Doctrines on the Subject, and an Inquiry Into the Character and Relations of Slavery The following Dissertation is devoted to an extensive subject, and one of great practical importance. Servitude occupies a prominent place in the Scriptures, and is illustrated by a great variety of Scripture precepts and examples. It enters into several of the most important institutions of civilized and Christian society, and opens a field for investigation, pertaining to the deepest principles of morality and religion. This subject in all its branches is now brought into discussion, by the existing excitement in relation to slavery. The advocates and apologists for slavery, are examining it for the purpose of fortifying their positions and maintaining more effectually their tottering cause. The opposers of slavery are examining it for the opposite purpose; namely, that of assailing more effectually the object of their opposition. This subject, therefore, is one of interest to all classes of persons. The order pursued in this Dissertation, has appeared to the writer to possess several important advantages. It follows the divine communications on this subject, beginning with the earliest, and proceeding regularly to the latest. On leaving them, it proceeds naturally from the more simple to the more complicated and difficult topics of inquiry. Whatever may have been his success, the writer has sought diligently and honestly for the truth, in respect to the Scripture examples of servitude. and the doctrines they inculcate on this subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible and Slavery: A Brief Examination of the Old and New Testaments on Servitude The brief examination of the Bible on the subject of servitude, contained in the following pages, was first suggested to the writer by the perusal of a recent work on the Life and Epistles of the Apostle Paul, in which the word servant in the standard English version had been rejected, and that of slave substituted.
