It provides a panoramic view of a Hindu approaches to religion, philosophy, science, politics, mythology, art, the role of women, and the past andthe future of humanity.—Dr. David Frawley Redundancy of the idea of religion seems to be growing inan age in which any mystery can be demystified by science. It also seems as if patronising religion is outdated in today’s so-called progressive world. However, adaptability and progressiveness have been the basic requisites of Hindu philosophy. Hence it requires its followers to evolve with change. Through this book, the authors have tried to endorse the role of Hinduism in the formation and development of human society. They have looked back at the conception, evolution and sustenance of Indian society through the lens of Hinduism, and have tried to explain this process through short Hindu mythological tales. We believe decoding folklore is also a source of understanding the history of any given period. Different tales spanning different ages and times bring forth a completely different picture of the mores and morality of our society, which still abide with the constant basic principles of Hinduism. This signifies the adaptability of this great religion with changing times. The reader will discover that, eventually, the core values of Hinduism remain the same and support its relevance today and will continue to do so for eternity. The universe is made up of stories, not of atoms.—Muriel Rukeyser, Writer and Poetess

The cause of all the miseries we have in the world is that men foolishly think pleasure to be the ideal to strive for. We are responsible for what we are; and whatever we wish ourselves to be, we have the power to make ourselves. If what we are now has been the result of our own past actions, it certainly follows that whatever we wish to be in future can be produced by our present actions. The investigation and analysis consists of five sections. First section deals with redefining God and truth, second section contain analysis of Arjuna’s question on self development. Third section attributes and functionalities of life are highlighted, fourth section deals with functioning of mind and lastly random results of harmonizing life and mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hindutva and Violence explores the place of history in the political thought of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (1883–1966), the most controversial Indian political thinker of the twentieth century and a key architect of Hindu nationalism. Examining his central claim that "Hindutva is not a word but a history," the book argues that, for Savarkar, this history was not a total history, a complete history, or a narrative history. Rather, its purpose was to trace key historical events to a powerful source—the font of motivation for "chief actors" of the past who had turned to violence in a permanent war for Hindutva as the founding principle of a Hindu nation. At the center of Savarkar's writings are historical characters who not only participated in ethical warfare against invaders, imperialists, and conquerors in India, but also became Hindus in acts of violence. He argues that the discipline of history provides the only method for interpreting Hindutva. The book also shows how Savarkar developed his conceptualization of history as a way into the meaning of Hindutva. Savarkar wrote extensively, from analyses of the nineteenth century to studies of antiquity, to draw up his histories of Hindus. He also turned to a wide range of works, from the epic tradition to contemporary social theory and world history, as his way of explicating "Hindutva" and "history." By examining Savarkar's key writings on history, historical methodology, and historiography, Vinayak Chaturvedi provides an interpretation of the philosophical underpinnings of Hindutva. Savarkar's interpretation of Hindutva, he demonstrates, requires above all grappling with his idea of history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a unique insider’s look at the world’s largest film industry, now globally known as ‘Bollywood’ and challenges existing notions about Indian films. Indian films have been a worldwide phenomenon for decades. Chapters in this edited volume take a fresh view of various hidden gems by maestros such as Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy, V Shantaram, Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Shakti Samant, Rishikesh Mukherjee, and others. Other chapters provide a pioneering review and analysis of the portrayal of Indian religious communities such as Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and Parsis. The themes covered include unique Indian feminism and male chauvinism, environment and climate issues, international locations and diaspora tourism, religious harmony and conflict, the India-Pakistan relationship, asceticism, and renunciation in Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. Unlike many recent studies of Indian films, these chapters do not distinguish between popular and serious cinema. Many chapters focus on Hindi films, but others bring insights from films made in other parts of India and its neighbouring countries. One of the chapters in this volume was originally published in the book titled Film and Place in an Intercultural Perspective India-Europe Film Connections, edited by Krzysztof Stachowiak, Hania Janta, Jani Kozina, and Therese Sunngren-Granlund. Another chapter was originally published in Worldviews: Global Religions, Culture, and Ecology. All other chapters were originally published in Visual Anthropology.

Here are singers that include the whole gamut from KL Saigal to Asha Bhosle, lyricists that include Sahir and Gulzar, music composers from Naushad to RD Burman, artistes that were part-time singers and full time actors like Ashok Kumar, melody queens like Noor Jahan and Lata Mangeshkar, gentlemen lyricists like Prem Dhawan and gentlemen singers like Manna Dey, mischief-makers like Kishore Kumar and rebels without pause like OP Nayyar and Majrooh Sultanpuri. In fact, this book is a house in which all these great talents live happily, each in a separate room, given space for self-expression. The serious research that has gone into this book is evident as you move from one chapter to another, opening layers after layers presented non-seriously. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ATTAINING DIVINITY · Have you ever wondered who or what God is? · Do you have the thirst to know the supreme truth? · Do you wish to rise above lower consciousness and ascend towards divinity? If yes, then this book is your answer. The journey towards divinity (or truth or supreme consciousness) comprises of two major paths: Knowledge (gyan) and Devotion (bhakti). Actually, both are essential to reach your destination. Some people feel that knowledge is sufficient. But there is the possibility of developing an ego of knowledge and thereby getting stuck in the cosmic illusion once again. Devotion is what will help you to remain established in the liberated state. Devotion gives you the power to easily overcome the obstacles to liberation—the mind, its ego and various tendencies. It helps you to lead a truly successful and peaceful life amidst these chaotic modern times. It adds joy and music to your journey towards the supreme consciousness. With the help of beautiful stories and examples, this book tells you everything about devotion; including what is devotion, its various aspects, its numerous benefits, as well as indications on how to develop devotion and reach the heights of devotion. With practice, you progress from the first to the tenth level of devotion, where you realize that divinity and you are not two different entities—both are one. Such bliss! But you then separate from divinity once again. Why? Only because you love the experience of devotion so much! Such is the sweetness or essence of devotion.
