Book excerpt: In this memoir, the author sets out on a fascinating journey that takes him back to the simple, rural settings of the tiny island of Barbados where he grew up. The narrative transitions to inner city Brooklyn, during the turbulent 1960s when the civil rights movement was seeking to dismantle the ugly practices of racism in the U.S. The author credits his Barbadian upbringing with his successes in athletics and academics. He provides a unique perspective on what it was like to be one of only a handful of black biochemists conducting discovery research in the pharmaceutical industry during the last three decades of the twentieth century.

As the first black female television journalist in the western United States, Belva Davis overcame the obstacles of racism and sexism, and helped change the face and focus of television news over the course of five decades. Born in the Great Depression to a fifteen-year-old Louisiana laundress, and raised in the projects of Oakland, California, Davis persevered to achieve a career beyond her imagination. Davis has seen profound changes in America, from being verbally and physically attacked while reporting on the 1964 Republican National Convention in San Francisco to witnessing the historic election of Barack Obama in 2008. She reported on some of the most explosive stories in modern American history, including the Vietnam War protests, the rise and fall of the Black Panthers, the mass suicides at Jonestown, the onset of the AIDS epidemic, and many others. She encountered everyone from Malcolm X to Frank Sinatra, James Brown, Ronald Reagan, Huey Newton, Muhammad Ali, Fidel Castro, Condoleezza Rice, and more. Davis spent her career on the frontlines of the battle for racial equality, bringing stories of black Americans into the light of day. Still active in her seventies, Davis hosted a news roundtable at one of the nation’s leading PBS stations. In this way she remained engaged in contemporary journalism, while offering her unique perspective on the decades that have shaped us.

She encountered a cavalcade of cultural icons: Malcolm X, Frank Sinatra, James Brown, Ronald Reagan, Huey Newton, Muhammad Ali, Alex Haley, Fidel Castro, Dianne Feinstein, Condoleezza Rice, and others. Throughout her career Davis soldiered in the trenches in the battle for racial equality and brought stories of black Americans out of the shadows and into the light of day. Still active in her seventies, Davis, the ''Walter Cronkite of the Bay Area,'' now hosts a weekly news roundtable and special reports at KQED, one of the nation's leading PBS stations,. In this way she has remained relevant and engaged in the stories of today, while offering her anecdote - rich perspective on the decades that have shaped us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eric's memoir begins with a vivid memory of the first time he smoked crack cocaine with his father at only fourteen years old. By eleven years old, Eric was drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana with his classmates and his cousins. Because much of his life felt so unstable, substances were an essential coping strategy for him early on. Soon, drugs and alcohol became part of his daily routine. Eric started getting in trouble with the law around age sixteen, and from there things escalated quickly. He spent two weeks in juvenile hall, and dropped out of high school shortly after. By seventeen he was fully hooked on smoking crack cocaine and would do just about anything for a fix. His relationship with his family deteriorated. As a result, Eric lived on the streets, stole what he needed when he needed it, and eventually went to prison. Eric spent the majority of his twenties and thirties in a vicious cycle: drug use, prison, release, relapse, over and over again. Although he was able to stay clean and focused on his health in prison, he would relapse soon after his release. Then, after weeks or even months of homelessness and drug use, he welcomed another stint in prison as a break from the hold that crack had over his every move. Eric tried rehab, escort work, and even had a successful stint in the adult entertainment industry. Nothing served a permanent solution to manage his addiction. Eventually, he found himself back in prison. His 19th trip to prison would prove to be the most monumental. Eric developed his first real friendship with another man, named Curtis. Curtis shared his life story with Eric, and encouraged Eric to do the same, with as much honesty and integrity as possible. It was through this relationship that Eric was finally able to learn to trust, and begin to heal from his past experiences of being manipulated by his father. Eric also formed lasting friendships with some of the speakers at the NA meetings he frequented. It was through these relationships, and the trust that was fostered through them, that Eric found true freedom. These relationships also set him up with a type of supportive, sober network upon release, which he had never had before. Now, Eric lives his life as a free man and is grateful to experience many things he feels he missed out on when he was younger. He now takes life day by day, putting one foot in front of the other, and sees every day as an opportunity to learn from others and most importantly, honor and cherish himself. He hopes that his story will inspire other people to reach their highest potential, no matter how long it may take, and savor each moment along the way.

Our cultural programming has embedded deep within us wrong ideas about wealth, money, and morality. These wrong ideas, and not greed or avarice, are the biggest source of poverty in the world. In Permission to Prosper, Ray Edwards offers three startling premises. First, God has promised you prosperity. Second, God has a purpose behind this prosperity (and it is not necessarily that you give all your money away). And third, the practice of prosperity is a spiritual activity. Not only do you have permission to prosper, but you also have a mandate to multiply. Permission to Prosper gives you the confidence and the keys to do just that.
