Book excerpt: The exodus of refugees from Nazi Germany in the 1930s has received far more attention from historians, social scientists, and demographers than many other migrations and persecutions in Europe. However, as a result of the overwhelming attention that has been given to the Holocaust within the historiography of Europe and the Second World War, the issues surrounding the flight of people from Nazi Germany prior to 1939 have been seen as Vorgeschichte (pre-history), implicating the Western European democracies and the United States as bystanders only in the impending tragedy. Based on a comparative analysis of national case studies, this volume deals with the challenges that the pre-1939 movement of refugees from Germany and Austria posed to the immigration controls in the countries of interwar Europe. Although Europe takes center-stage, this volume also looks beyond, to the Middle East, Asia and America. This global perspective outlines the constraints under which European policy makers (and the refugees) had to make decisions. By also considering the social implications of policies that became increasingly protectionist and nationalistic, and bringing into focus the similarities and differences between European liberal states in admitting the refugees, it offers an important contribution to the wider field of research on political and administrative practices.

They are told that they are going to work camps; but they are headed to extermination camps... After losing everything including her family, Annishia joins the resistance and decides to save the Jews from Auschwitz; she realizes that she is in danger. She struggles to make sure that the Nazis never find out what she is doing. One day, someone turns her in, and she is abducted by the Nazis. She is sent to Auschwitz where she vows to help the Jews escape. She becomes a house servant of an officer who commands his soldiers to "kill them all." Now she is challenged with living out her vow or protecting herself. What will she choose? This novel tells a story through the eyes of Annishia, a seventeen-year-old girl who loses everything including her family. She becomes part of the resistance and embarks on a mission to save the lives of six hundred Jews from the horrors of Auschwitz during what was the most horrid years. This is a story to help people never forget history and the value of human life, and to show how to forgive the unforgivable.

Book excerpt: The increase in volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity in business and society is confronting many managers with the question of which skills they need to adapt or relearn to act effectively as managers in the future. The authors show you that the key to this does not lie in the learning of new management concepts. On the contrary, effective leadership is much more about homing in and focusing on what has not changed, namely the core attitudes and patterns of action inherent in human beings. Content: - Leadership as a transformation process - A basic framework of patterns of action as a basis for effective leadership and personality growth - Morality as the inner orientation and basis for economically sustainable leadership - Courage as a catalyst

Book excerpt: With its unique focus on how culture contributed to the blurring of ideological boundaries between the East and the West, this important volume offers fascinating insights into the tensions, rivalries and occasional cooperation between the two blocs. Encompassing developments in both the arts and sciences, the authors analyze focal points, aesthetic preferences and cultural phenomena through topics as wide-ranging as the East- and West German interior design; the Soviet stance on genetics; US cultural diplomacy during and after the Cold War; and the role of popular music as a universal cultural ambassador. Well positioned at the cutting edge of Cold War studies, this important work illuminates some of the striking paradoxes involved in the production and reception of culture in East and West.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the concept of the Imperial Mode of Living, Brand and Wissen highlight the fact that capitalism implies uneven development as well as a constant and accelerating universalisation of a Western mode of production and living. The logic of liberal markets since the 19thCentury, and especially since World War II, has been inscribed into everyday practices that are usually unconsciously reproduced. The authors show that they are a main driver of the ecological crisis and economic and political instability. The Imperial Mode of Living implies that people's everyday practices, including individual and societal orientations, as well as identities, rely heavily on the unlimited appropriation of resources; a disproportionate claim on global and local ecosystems and sinks; and cheap labour from elsewhere. This availability of commodities is largely organised through the world market, backed by military force and/or the asymmetric relations of forces as they have been inscribed in international institutions. Moreover, the Imperial Mode of Living implies asymmetrical social relations along class, gender and race within the respective countries. Here too, it is driven by the capitalist accumulation imperative, growth-oriented state policies and status consumption. The concrete production conditions of commodities are rendered invisible in the places where the commodities are consumed. The imperialist world order is normalized through the mode of production and living.
