Book Synopsis The Genus Betula by : Kenneth Ashburner
Download or read book The Genus Betula written by Kenneth Ashburner and published by Botanical Magazine Monograph. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birches or Betula are among the most attractive and common trees in the landscape and in gardens. The Genus Betula is the first monograph published on this plant group, the species of which have been notoriously difficult to identify. Accounts are given of all known birches found in Europe, Asia and North America, both white and brown barked, and a key for their identification. An invaluable tool for arboriculturalists and professional and amateur gardeners, and will also appeal to lovers of botanical art.

Book excerpt: The genus Betula, generally known as birch, belongs to the family Betulaceae. There are about 83 recognized species of Betula, all of which are essential ecological components of northern temperate and boreal woodlands in many parts of the world. The species of this genus have a good tolerance to freezing temperature and water deficit, as well as high sensitivity to UV-B exposure. The chemical composition of Betula pubescens Ehrh. and Betula pendula Roth. buds is assessed, providing data on their biological activities. Betula species show antiarthritic, anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective and immunomodulatory activities, and the authors propose that it is important to consider the biopharmaceutical properties of the secondary metabolites for further development.

Book Synopsis Bronze Age Settlement and Land-Use in Thy, Northwest Denmark (Volume 1 & 2) by : Jens-Henrik Bech
Download or read book Bronze Age Settlement and Land-Use in Thy, Northwest Denmark (Volume 1 & 2) written by Jens-Henrik Bech and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two volume monograph about the region of Thy in the early Bronze Age provides a high resolution archaeological and ecological model of the organisation of landscape, settlements and households during the period 1500-1100 BC. Bordering the North Sea to the west, and the calmer waters of the Limfjord to the east, the region of Thy in Denmark experienced four centuries of intense economic and demographic expansion. By combining results from environmental and economic research (pollen and palaeo-botanical analyses) with intensive field surveys and excavations of farmsteads with exceptional preservation, it has been possible to open a window to the changes that transformed Bronze Age society and its environment during a few centuries of exceptional expansion and wealth consumption. The results from this interdisciplinary venture made it possible to link together the histories of local farmsteads with the wider regional and global history of the Bronze Age in North-western Europe during this period. Here is much to feed on for students and researchers of the Bronze Age alike.

Book Synopsis Protocols for Micropropagation of Woody Trees and Fruits by : S.Mohan Jain
Download or read book Protocols for Micropropagation of Woody Trees and Fruits written by S.Mohan Jain and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-09-18 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micropropagation has become a reliable and routine approach for large-scale rapid plant multiplication, which is based on plant cell, tissue and organ culture on well defined tissue culture media under aseptic conditions. A lot of research efforts are being made to develop and refine micropropagation methods and culture media for large-scale plant multiplication of several number of plant species. However, many forest and fruit tree species still remain recalcitrant to in vitro culture and require highly specific culture conditions for plant growth and development. The recent challenges on plant cell cycle regulation and the presented potential molecular mechanisms of recalcitrance are providing excellent background for understanding on totipotency and what is more development of micropropagation protocols. For large-scale in vitro plant production the important attributes are the quality, cost effectiveness, maintenance of genetic fidelity, and long-term storage. The need for appropriate in vitro plant regeneration methods for woody plants, including both forest and fruit trees, is still overwhelming in order to overcome problems facing micropropagation such as somaclonal variation, recalcitrant rooting, hyperhydricity, polyphenols, loss of material during hardening and quality of plant material. Moreover, micropropagation may be utilized, in basic research, in production of virus-free planting material, cryopreservation of endangered and elite woody species, applications in tree breeding and reforestation.
