Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian American Identities and Practices: Folkloric Expressions in Everyday Life probes the intersection, interplay, and interconnection of Asian and Asian American folklore and folklife in globally fluid and culturally creative landscapes among Asian American communities and subjects. Asian American folklore, as a way of life and practice, has emerged and continues to emerge as Asian Americans lay claim and take root in the American mosaic. As such, the contributors in this volume all show how the Asian American historical experiences and continued international migration inform the production of new folkloric practices, subjectivities, and ideologies, which in turn strengthen specific Asian American ways of life while normalizing folklore that are squarely produced in Asian America. This collectionillustrates that Asian American folklore and folklife is interwoven with social relationships, the creation of various types of ethnic, cultural, and national identities, and adaptive strategies within the particular historical periods, communities, and shifting boundaries and demographics of Asian America. The global context of Asian American folklore and folklife, especially in the racially charged post-9/11 context, bespeaks how Asians, past and present, maneuver the cultural spaces of their host society and old traditions to create new sites and new opportunities for cultural folkloric production and expression in everyday life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Siya Nga!” is a Filipino expression of wonder and, thus, of openness to possibilities. It is an expression of epiphany and eureka! This book offers the readers short reflections by Jose Ramon T. Villarin, SJ on fifty-two “familiar” terms in the Christian faith — terms that the author and editor deem significant in the life and living of those who share the Christian faith, either by religious affiliation or by spiritual aspiration. The reflections are elucidated by images of eighty artworks by fifty-four Filipino artists. The reflections seek to make these terms of faith —Incarnation, Trinity, Word, Freedom, even Christmas, for example — once again unfamiliar. In that way, and in Fr. Villarin’s own words, “the newness of God will never grow old, and the bigness of his love ... will never grow small.” Reflection, etymologically speaking, means “bending back.” The bending back of perspectives allows readers to dwell once more on Christian wonder, openness, possibility, and epiphany. “Siya Nga!” was published in paper format by the De La Salle University Publishing House in 2019: ISBN (cloth): 978-971-555-680-4 ISBN (paper): 978-971-555-679-8 This ebook edition is a revised and enlarged edition from the original paper publication, and will be available in all the main ebook formats (Kindle [Mobi], ePUB, PDF) worldwide. The Kindle version will be on Amazon, and the other e-versions available for download purchase via other web vendors.

Urban bicycling has become more popular than ever as recession-strapped, climate-conscious city dwellers reinvent basic transportation. In this wide-ranging memoir, artist/musician and co-founder of Talking Heads David Byrne--who has relied on a bike to get around New York City since the early 1980s--relates his adventures as he pedals through and engages with some of the world's major cities. From Buenos Aires to Berlin, he meets a range of people both famous and ordinary, shares his thoughts on art, fashion, music, globalization, and the ways that many places are becoming more bike-friendly. Bicycle Diaries is an adventure on two wheels conveyed with humor, curiosity, and humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfredo Roces: Digital Paintings features the digital art creation of a polymathic Filipino artist. Though formally trained in the traditional school of fine arts—where in the mid-fifties, the artist took up drawing classes with German Expressionist and Dadaist, George Grosz at the Art Students League of New York—Roces welcomed with gusto the offer of new technologies for his artmaking. The artist’s encounter with “Photoshop” in 2004 would eventually set the stage for his ongoing adventures with digital artmaking—when in 2011, nearing eighty years of age, he discovered the Big Apple and found his Eden with “Brushes” (and later on, “Procreate”) in iPad. The book presents a selection of more than a hundred of Roces’s iPad drawings in various genres—portrait, still life, human figure, and abstract—and shows to full effect the artist’s zest for life. The book is prologued with an interview with the editor, David Jonathan Bayot, in which Roces tells of a life so far and speaks of his dreams for the tomorrows ahead. A prefatory interview is complemented by the artist’s own account of his “adventures with digital art.” In the words of Tina Colayco, President of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila: "There is much to be admired with Alfredo Roces who at 90 remains an authentic and authoritative persona in Philippine art and culture. The book captures the essence of Roces as a Filipino artist, the zeitgeist of so many decades, and a continuing passion to create art. It brings to the fore the journey of the gentleman-artist described in the epigraph to the book as ‘sitting in the Row of a morning’.”

Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of the Canadian Constitution provides an ideal first stop for Canadians and non-Canadians seeking a clear, concise, and authoritative account of Canadian constitutional law. The Handbook is divided into six parts: Constitutional History, Institutions and Constitutional Change, Aboriginal Peoples and the Canadian Constitution, Federalism, Rights and Freedoms, and Constitutional Theory. Readers of this Handbook will discover some of the distinctive features of the Canadian constitution: for example, the importance of Indigenous peoples and legal systems, the long-standing presence of a French-speaking population, French civil law and Quebec, the British constitutional heritage, the choice of federalism, as well as the newer features, most notably the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Section Thirty-Five regarding Aboriginal rights and treaties, and the procedures for constitutional amendment. The Handbook provides a remarkable resource for comparativists at a time when the Canadian constitution is a frequent topic of constitutional commentary. The Handbook offers a vital account of constitutional challenges and opportunities at the time of the 150th anniversary of Confederation.
