Book excerpt: This beryllium treatise was made possible by the expertise and hard work of members of the Joint US-UK Working Group on Beryllium (JOWOG 22), which was set up in the 1960s to allow a controlled exchange of technical information on the science and application of beryllium between the two countries. The leading roles in JOWOG 22 of Dr. Lee Roberts of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory and Dr. Geoffrey Ellis ofthe Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (A WRE) at Aldermaston are particularly noteworthy. Excerpts from so me of the material in this book were presented at an international conference "Beryllium 77" in London in October 1977. The conference, which was superbly organized by Dr. John Martin and his co workers at A WRE, was sponsored by the Metals Society and the Institu tion of Metallurgists, and was particularly instructive in revealing the unexpectedly strong position of the USSR in some aspects of beryllium physical metallurgy and ductility improvement. Advance publicity for this book was also provided by presentations at the AlME 1977 annual meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. The presentations were co-sponsored by the Metal lurgy and Non-Ferrous Metals Committees at the request of committee members John E. Smugeresky and Gilbert J. London. D. Webster G. J. The 29 chapters include the mineralogy of beryllium and the preferred global sources of ore bodies. The identification and specifics of the industrial metallurgical processes used to form oxide from the ore and then metal from the oxide are thoroughly described. The special features of beryllium chemistry are introduced, including analytical chemical practices. Beryllium compounds of industrial interest are identified and discussed. Alloying, casting, powder processing, forming, metal removal, joining and other manufacturing processes are covered. The effect of composition and process on the mechanical and physical properties of beryllium alloys assists the reader in material selection. The physical metallurgy chapter brings conformity between chemical and physical metallurgical processing of beryllium, metal, alloys, and compounds. The environmental degradation of beryllium and its alloys both in aqueous and high temperature condition are presented. The health and environmental issues are thoroughly presented the current requirements and established practices for handling beryllium in the workplace are available. A thorough list of references will assist the user of this book.

Book excerpt: Beryllium: From Discovery to Modern Energy Applications is a comprehensive exploration of one of the most versatile and critical materials in modern technology. This book delves into the fascinating journey of Beryllium, from its early discovery to its current applications across a wide range of industries, including aerospace, defense, nuclear energy, and electronics. Readers will gain an in-depth understanding of Beryllium’s unique physical and chemical properties, its position on the periodic table, and the intricate atomic structure that sets it apart from other elements. The book also examines the natural occurrence of Beryllium in minerals such as beryl and bertrandite, providing insights into the geological processes that lead to its formation. Each chapter builds on this foundation by exploring the various ways Beryllium is used in industry. The aerospace sector leverages Beryllium’s light weight and high stiffness for the construction of critical components, while the defense industry relies on its exceptional properties for the development of advanced weaponry. In the nuclear energy field, Beryllium plays a crucial role as a neutron moderator, and in electronics, it is valued for its thermal stability and electrical conductivity. Beyond its industrial applications, the book also addresses the challenges associated with Beryllium, including its extraction, refinement, and the health and environmental considerations that must be managed to ensure its safe use. The book provides detailed case studies, insights into the latest technological advancements, and an analysis of the economic impact of Beryllium-related industries. Beryllium: From Discovery to Modern Energy Applications is an essential resource for scientists, engineers, industry professionals, and anyone interested in the materials that power our modern world. It offers a thorough and engaging exploration of Beryllium’s role in shaping the future of technology and energy.

Book excerpt: Beryllium is a lightweight metal that is used for its exceptional strength and high heat-absorbing capability. Beryllium and its alloys can be found in many important technologies in the defense and aeronautics industries, such as nuclear devices, satellite systems, radar systems, and aircraft bushings and bearings. Pulmonary disease associated with exposure to beryllium has been recognized and studied since the early 1940s, and an occupational guideline for limiting exposure to beryllium has been in place since 1949. Over the last few decades, much has been learned about chronic beryllium disease and factors that contribute to its occurrence in exposed people. Despite reduced workplace exposure, chronic beryllium disease continues to occur. Those developments have led to debates about the adequacy of the long-standing occupational exposure limit for protecting worker health. This book, requested by the U.S. Air Force to help to determine the steps necessary to protect its workforce from the effects of beryllium used in military aerospace applications, reviews the scientific literature on beryllium and outlines an exposure and disease management program for its protecting workers.

Book excerpt: A practical guide to the methods in general use for the complete analysis of silicate rock material and for the determination of all those elements present in major, minor or trace amounts in silicate and other rocks that are routinely, commonly or occasionally determined by methods that are considered to be essentially chemical in character. Such methods include those based upon spectrophotometry, flame emission spectrometry and atomic absorption spectroscopy, as well as gravimetry, titrimetry and the use of ion-selective electrodes. Separation stages are described in full, using precipitation, solvent extraction, distillation, and ion-ex procedures as appropriate. The third edition has been fully revised and updated.
