As a Czech immigrant who never got the chance to go to college, Irena vowed to give her daughter every opportunity for success and it looks like it has finally paid off. But when Elise is arrested for vandalizing an upscale high-rise lobby, we get the first glimpse of a young woman facing a long, frightening battle with mental illness. Over the next 30 years Elise cycles through mania and depression, all the while taking physical and financial risks and surrendering to delusions and paranoia. Out of love for her daughter, Irena does what she can to help Elise only to find herself enabling and participating in the madness. Grossman tells a powerful story that is both heartbreaking and hopeful about the enduring bond between a mother and daughter despite generational differences, cultural disparities, and a tenacious mental illness constantly pushing the strength of their bond to the limit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deeply affecting–and infuriating–portrait of the life and death of a courageous indigenous leader The first time Honduran indigenous leader Berta Cáceres met the journalist Nina Lakhani, Cáceres said, ‘The army has an assassination list with my name at the top. I want to live, but in this country there is total impunity. When they want to kill me, they will do it.’ In 2015, Cáceres won the Goldman Prize, the world’s most prestigious environmental award, for leading a campaign to stop construction of an internationally funded hydroelectric dam on a river sacred to her Lenca people. Less than a year later she was dead. Lakhani tracked Cáceres remarkable career, in which the defender doggedly pursued her work in the face of years of threats and while friends and colleagues in Honduras were exiled and killed defending basic rights. Lakhani herself endured intimidation and harassment as she investigated the murder. She was the only foreign journalist to attend the 2018 trial of Cáceres’s killers, where state security officials, employees of the dam company and hired hitmen were found guilty of murder. Many questions about who ordered and paid for the killing remain unanswered. Drawing on more than a hundred interviews, confidential legal filings, and corporate documents unearthed after years of reporting in Honduras, Lakhani paints an intimate portrait of an extraordinary woman in a state beholden to corporate powers, organised crime, and the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mrs. Maggie you will meet here is like no other lady who is beyond 94 years of age. Where her energy comes from is anybody’s guess. She grew up in a family of six; one older sister and two older brothers. Her father was a carpenter and her mother stayed home. She grew up in a rural area where most people earned their wages from fishing and/or farming corn, soy beans, or tobacco. Her parents had a strong belief in God and taught their beliefs to their children. They also taught them survival skills, instilled a great work ethic, and disciplined them by the rulings of the Bible. Mrs. Maggie married Mr. Charles and they had nine children; six boys and three girls. They raised their children with the Bible as their guide. They both believed that everything one does in life can be found and spoken to in the Bible. That was what they both grew up believing, and that is what they taught their children. All their children attended public school, but they, as parents, also taught them again at home. They attended church services where good vs. bad, right vs. wrong, and such things as honor, respect, ethics, and worship were taught. Again, as parents, they taught their children Bible lessons at home to show how it could apply to daily living. After Mr. Charles’ death and all the children had moved away and were married, Mrs. Maggie continued to live in the large white house on the corner. She began to spend more time making useful and highly appreciated gifts for others who lived in the neighborhood. Leslie and Melba were two young girls who absolutely adored her and spent many hours with her. They were not with her every day, but they did spend many hours in her company learning about life.

Book excerpt: 31-year-old society matron Lola Woodby has survived her loveless marriage with an unholy mixture of highballs, detective novels, and chocolate layer cake, until, her husband dies suddenly, leaving her his fortune...or so Lola thought. As it turns out, all she inherits from Alfie is a big pile of debt. Pretty soon, Lola and her stalwart Swedish cook, Berta, are reduced to hiding out in the secret love nest Alfie kept in New York City. But when rent comes due, Lola and Berta have no choice but to accept an offer made by one of Alfie's girls-on-the-side: in exchange for a handsome sum of money, the girl wants Lola to retrieve a mysterious reel of film for her. It sounds like an easy enough way to earn the rent money. But Lola and Berta realize they're in way over their heads when, before they can retrieve it, the man currently in possession of the film reel is murdered, and the reel disappears. On a quest to retrieve the reel and solve the murder before the killer comes after them next, Lola and Berta find themselves navigating one wacky situation after another in high style and low company. Charming, witty, often laugh-out-loud funny, Maia Chance's Come Hell or Highball is the first in the Discreet Retrieval Agency Mysteries and introduces a sparkling new voice in crime fiction.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five centuries before the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts, indigenous North Americans had already built a vast urban center on the banks of the Mississippi River where East St. Louis is today. This is the story of North America's largest archaeological site, told through the lives, personalities, and conflicts of the men and women who excavated and studied it. At its height the metropolis of Cahokia had twenty thousand inhabitants in the city center with another ten thousand in the outskirts. Cahokia was a precisely planned community with a fortified central city and surrounding suburbs. Its entire plan reflected the Cahokian's concept of the cosmos. Its centerpiece, Monk's Mound, ten stories tall, is the largest pre-Columbian structure in North America, with a base circumference larger than that of either the Great Pyramid of Khufu in Egypt or the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan in Mexico. Nineteenth-century observers maintained that the mounds, too sophisticated for primitive Native American cultures, had to have been created by a superior, non-Indian race, perhaps even by survivors of the lost continent of Atlantis. Melvin Fowler, the "dean" of Cahokia archaeologists, and Biloine Whiting Young tell an engrossing story of the struggle to protect the site from the encroachment of interstate highways and urban sprawl. Now identified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and protected by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, Cahokia serves as a reminder that the indigenous North Americans had a past of complexity and great achievement.
