Book Synopsis The Quality of Freedom by : Matthew H. Kramer
Download or read book The Quality of Freedom written by Matthew H. Kramer and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-05-29 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least since the publication of Isaiah Berlin's famous essay "Two Concepts of Liberty" nearly half a century ago, political philosophers have argued vigorously over the relative merits of "positive" and "negative" accounts of freedom. Matthew Kramer writes squarely within the negative-liberty tradition, but he incorporates a number of ideas that are quite often associated with theories of positive liberty. Much of The Quality of Freedom is devoted to elaborating the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of particular freedoms and unfreedoms; however, the book's cardinal objective is to establish the measurability of each person's overall freedom and of each society's aggregate freedom. On the one hand, Kramer contends that the existence of any particular instance of liberty or unfreedom is a matter of fact that can be confirmed or disconfirmed without any reliance on evaluative or normative considerations. On the other hand, he argues that the extent of each person's overall freedom or unfreedom cannot be ascertained entirely in the absence of evaluative assumptions. By combining those two positions and developing them in detail, Kramer pits himself against all positive accounts of liberty and most negative accounts. In the course of so doing, he aims to demonstrate the rigorous measurability of overall liberty - something that many writers on freedom have casually dismissed as impossible. Although Kramer concentrates principally on constructing a systematic analysis of sociopolitical freedom, he engages critically with the work of many of the leading contemporary writers on the topic.

Book Synopsis Patient Safety and Quality of Care in Intensive Care Medicine by : Jean-Daniel Chiche
Download or read book Patient Safety and Quality of Care in Intensive Care Medicine written by Jean-Daniel Chiche and published by MWV. This book was released on 2009 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The maxim "Primum non nocere" is almost as old as the practice of medicine. In combination with the principles of beneficence, autonomy and justice, and whilst keeping in mind the confidence and dignity of the patient, it should constitute the basis of our behaviours as physicians and nurses. Since diagnostic and therapeutic interventions have become more complex and their risk/benefit ratios more difficult to assess, the importance of safety and quality of care rises. Avoiding the infliction of harm on our patients has moved into the focus of clinical medicine"--Publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Technical Safety – An Attribute of Quality by : Hubert Keller
Download or read book Technical Safety – An Attribute of Quality written by Hubert Keller and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on technical safety, means of expanding the current procedures, and making the related risks more predictable. It identifies the ‘hidden commonalities’ of the various technical safety concepts and formulates a corresponding procedure, applicable across disciplines, in a single guideline. The future is now: we constantly face change through science, research and technologies, change through industrial development, and new innovations and complexities. Our society fundamentally depends on technical systems, infrastructures and interconnected smart components, in every corner of the human environment. And these systems bring with them the need for technical safety. The risks of extending what is technically feasible have to be identified and analyzed at an early stage so as to avoid and/or mitigate potential harm by means of appropriate countermeasures. Every technical field interprets technical safety in its own way. However, if a safety concept is to be comprehensively applied, it must be compatible with all technical fields – a challenge this book successfully addresses.
Book Synopsis Relating System Quality and Software Architecture by : Ivan Mistrik
Download or read book Relating System Quality and Software Architecture written by Ivan Mistrik and published by Morgan Kaufmann. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: System Quality and Software Architecture collects state-of-the-art knowledge on how to intertwine software quality requirements with software architecture and how quality attributes are exhibited by the architecture of the system. Contributions from leading researchers and industry evangelists detail the techniques required to achieve quality management in software architecting, and the best way to apply these techniques effectively in various application domains (especially in cloud, mobile and ultra-large-scale/internet-scale architecture) Taken together, these approaches show how to assess the value of total quality management in a software development process, with an emphasis on architecture. The book explains how to improve system quality with focus on attributes such as usability, maintainability, flexibility, reliability, reusability, agility, interoperability, performance, and more. It discusses the importance of clear requirements, describes patterns and tradeoffs that can influence quality, and metrics for quality assessment and overall system analysis. The last section of the book leverages practical experience and evidence to look ahead at the challenges faced by organizations in capturing and realizing quality requirements, and explores the basis of future work in this area. Explains how design decisions and method selection influence overall system quality, and lessons learned from theories and frameworks on architectural quality Shows how to align enterprise, system, and software architecture for total quality Includes case studies, experiments, empirical validation, and systematic comparisons with other approaches already in practice.
Book Synopsis Studies on the educational quality of schools by : Manfred Prenzel
Download or read book Studies on the educational quality of schools written by Manfred Prenzel and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The priority program 'The educational quality of schools' has been established seven years ago by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The projects in this program investigated conditions inside and outside of school and their impact on the development of mathematical, scientific, and cross-curricular competencies. In this book major findings of the program are presented. The projects not only give an overview of their research questioning methods and findings, but also of approaches and materials that have been developed to support learning and teaching in mathematics and science class rooms. The studies reported here identify factors for weaknesses in the educational outcomes that became apparent in the international comparisons like TIMSS and PISA. The projects, however, provide empirically substantiated units on approaches that can help to improve the educational quality of schools. [Publisher, ed].

This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
