Book Synopsis Bengal – India’s Rebellious Spirit by : Temple of India foundation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a time when Bengal set the benchmark for prosperity in India. It was a province that traded with countries around the world, in an era when the word ‘globalisation’ did not even exist. Fabrics weaved in Bengal were of incomparable superiority, and the indigo exported from the province had substantial demand in the European markets. However, there came a time when the sun set on this flourishing land. As it passed from the hands of the Mughals to the English, and was later divided into two governments, Bengal touched the pinnacles of greatness and plummeted into the depths of suffering. Today, it is rising once again like a phoenix from its own ashes. This book takes you through the several episodes of history, which shaped Bengal—events that spanned victory, death, loss, love, avarice and patriotism.
Download or read book Bechu written by Clem Seecharan and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clem Seecharan has written a useful documentary history of Bechu, the first Indian to testify before the Royal Commission in 1897. Now who was this Bechu? He was, in Seecharan's words, "an indefatigable gadfly," who in letters to the local press revealed the conditions of Indian indentureship: poor wages, sexual exploitation of women by overseers and managers, and the virtual impossibility for Indians to obtain justice because of the collusion between colonial authorities and the planters. This knowledge we owe to economic historian Alan Adamson who "discovered" Bechu in the 1960s. Yet the man himself remained somewhat of a mystery, something Bechu himself seems to have cultivated. Seecharan has now filled a number of lacunae in our understanding with this two-part volume. The first section focuses on Bechu and the British Guianese environment in the late nineteenth century, while the second part includes letters and memoranda by Bechu (and reactions to them by local opponents).

Book Synopsis The Politics and Law of Democratic Transition by : Sonia Zaman Khan
Download or read book The Politics and Law of Democratic Transition written by Sonia Zaman Khan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peaceful legal and political ‘changing of the guards’ is taken for granted in developed democracies, but is not evident everywhere. As a relatively new democracy, marred by long periods of military rule, Bangladesh has been encountering serious problems because of a prevailing culture of mistrust, weak governance institutions, constant election manipulation and a peculiar socio-political history, which between 1990 and 2011 led to a unique form of transitional remedy in the form of an unelected neutral ‘caretaker covernment’ (CTG) during electoral transitions. This book provides a contextual analysis of the CTG mechanism including its inception, operation, manipulation by the government of the day and abrupt demise. It queries whether this constitutional provision, even if presently abolished after overseeing four acceptable general elections, actually remains a crucial tool to safeguard free and fair elections in Bangladesh. Given the backdrop of the culture of mistrust, the author examines whether holding national elections without a CTG, or an umpire of some kind, can settle the issue of credibility of a given government. The book portrays that even the management of elections is a matter of applying pluralist approaches. Considering the historical legacy and contemporary political trajectory of Bangladesh, the cause of deep-rooted mistrust is examined to better understand the rationale for the requirement, emergence and workings of the CTG structure. The book unveils that it is not only the lack of nation-building measures and governments’ wish to remain in power at any cost which lay behind the problems that Bangladesh faces today. Part of the problem is also the flawed logic of nation-building on the foundation of Western democratic norms which may be unsuitable in a South Asian cultural environment. Although democratic transitions, on the crutch of the CTG, have been useful in moments of crisis, its abolition creates the need for a new or revised transitional modality – perhaps akin to the CTG ethos – to oversee electoral governance, which will have to be renegotiated by the polity based on the people’s will. The book provides a valuable resource for researchers and academics working in the area of constitutional law, democratic transition, legal pluralism and election law.
Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of India by : Surjit Mansingh
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of India written by Surjit Mansingh and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2006-05-09 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of India is the second most populous, the seventh largest by geographical area, and has the fourth largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity in the world. While it has always been an important country, it has often been neglected. Of late, however, there has been much talk of the 'new' India, one with greater economic dynamism, a more active foreign policy, and the emergence of a huge middle class. With over a hundred new cross-referenced dictionary entries-the majority of which pertain to the last decade-and updating others, the second edition of the Historical Dictionary of India illustrates the rapidly evolving situation without neglecting the country's ancient past. The chronology has been brought up to date, the introduction expanded, and the bibliography includes numerous new titles.
