Book excerpt: "An essential document of our time." —Charles D’Ambrosio, author of Loitering In search of answers and action, the award-winning poet and essayist Lisa Wells brings us Believers, introducing trailblazers and outliers from across the globe who have found radically new ways to live and reconnect to the Earth in the face of climate change We find ourselves at the end of the world. How, then, shall we live? Like most of us, Lisa Wells has spent years overwhelmed by increasingly urgent news of climate change on an apocalyptic scale. She did not need to be convinced of the stakes, but she could not find practical answers. She embarked on a pilgrimage, seeking wisdom and paths to action from outliers and visionaries, pragmatists and iconoclasts. Believers tracks through the lives of these people who are dedicated to repairing the earth and seemingly undaunted by the task ahead. Wells meets an itinerant gardener and misanthrope leading a group of nomadic activists in rewilding the American desert. She finds a group of environmentalist Christians practicing “watershed discipleship” in New Mexico and another group in Philadelphia turning the tools of violence into tools of farming—guns into ploughshares. She watches the world’s greatest tracker teach others how to read a trail, and visits botanists who are restoring land overrun by invasive species and destructive humans. She talks with survivors of catastrophic wildfires in California as they try to rebuild in ways that acknowledge the fires will come again. Through empathic, critical portraits, Wells shows that these trailblazers are not so far beyond the rest of us. They have had the same realization, have accepted that we are living through a global catastrophe, but are trying to answer the next question: How do you make a life at the end of the world? Through this miraculous commingling of acceptance and activism, this focus on seeing clearly and moving forward, Wells is able to take the devastating news facing us all, every day, and inject a possibility of real hope. Believers demands transformation. It will change how you think about your own actions, about how you can still make an impact, and about how we might yet reckon with our inheritance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "The Thomas Factor," Gary R. Habermas presents a transformative exploration of religious doubt and its potential as a catalyst for spiritual growth. This insightful book delves into the often misunderstood territory of doubt, revealing how it can be harnessed as a powerful tool for deepening one's faith and drawing closer to God. Habermas, with his extensive experience and empathetic approach, offers a lifeline to believers struggling with uncertainties in their spiritual journey. At the heart of the book is the dissection of three types of doubt: factual, emotional, and volitional. Habermas, through his own experiences and those of the individuals he has counseled, demonstrates that doubts are not a sign of weak faith but rather an opportunity for profound personal growth. He skillfully navigates the reader through the complexities of each doubt type, providing practical strategies for overcoming them. The book is enriched with examples from both the Old and New Testaments, showcasing that doubt has been a constant companion of even the most steadfast believers throughout history. In debunking common myths about doubting, Habermas sets the stage for building a resilient foundation for faith. Practical chapters guide the reader in developing a tailored strategy to address their doubts. This includes disciplines like prayer, Scripture memorization, journaling, and practicing Christian behavior. Habermas emphasizes that working through doubts is not just an intellectual exercise but involves the whole person — emotions, will, and intellect. "The Thomas Factor" does not shy away from the tougher aspects of theological inquiry. It addresses why theological differences exist and how to live with unanswered questions, thus equipping the reader to navigate the diverse landscape of Christian thought. Habermas concludes with a thoughtful discussion on the negative and positive consequences of doubt. He illustrates how doubt, when approached correctly, can lead to a stronger, more authentic faith, likening the process to refining gold. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone grappling with doubts about their faith. It offers not only solace and understanding but also practical tools for turning doubt into a stepping stone towards a more intimate and robust relationship with God. Target Audience: "The Thomas Factor" is ideal for Christians at any stage of their faith journey, particularly those wrestling with doubts or seeking a deeper understanding of their beliefs. It is also a valuable resource for pastors, counselors, and lay leaders who provide spiritual guidance and support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to its half-century under Communism, as well as its little-known language, Albania has suffered from neglect and a sense of isolation. Yet, as this study helps to show, the Albanian lands have a long history of interaction with others. They have been a meeting-ground of Christianity and Islam; a channel through which Venice connected with the Ottoman Balkans; a place of interest to the Habsburgs; and a focus for the ambitions of neighbouring powers in the late Ottoman period. Albanians themselves could have many different identities. The studies in this volume, by one of the world's leading experts on Albanian history, range from the fifteenth century to the twentieth, taking in politics, social history, religion and diplomacy. Each is based on original research; the longest, on Ali Pasha, uses a wealth of manuscript material to tell, for the first time, the full story of the vital role he played in the international politics of the Napoleonic Wars. Other studies bring to life ordinary individuals hitherto unknown to history: women hauled before the Inquisition, for example, or the author of the first Albanian autobiography. Some of these studies have been printed before (several in hard-to-find publications, and one only in Albanian), but the greater part of this book appears here for the first time. This is not only a landmark publication for readers interested in south-east European history. It also engages with many broader issues, including religious conversion, 'crypto-Christianity' among Muslims, methods of enslavement within the Ottoman Empire, and the nature of modern myth-making about national identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a serious book of philosophy, where better to begin to canvass various philosophical concepts and arguments than in relation to what is so familiar to every one of us –– the fact that we all have many and varied beliefs. The book is an introduction of philosophy, indeed intended as an introductory textbook. The author, as he wrote it, had both the teacher and the student in mind. He hopes it will prove a worthy contribution in the college, seminary and university classroom, both interesting and serious. As well as thirteen clearly written chapters introducing the various topics, it is also provided with helpful summaries, tutorials, and work sheets. In considering belief we raise raises many of the central problems philosophers have discussed: knowledge, truth, justification, rationality, meaning, explanation, self deception, interpretation, reality, cause and effect, personal identity, theories, laws, hypotheses, the self, survival, God. Since belief is a universal phenomenon, it has unfortunately become common to understand the unqualified term ‘believer’ of the religious person. It seems strange to ask the question, ‘Are you a believer?’ outside the religious context. But we do when we are thinking of a particular theory or ideology or political attitude. We sometimes want to know whether she is ‘one of us!’ The author sometimes finds it convenient to illustrate his exposition by referring to religious beliefs. One does not have to be a religious believer to see that it is relevant and indeed interesting to do so. The history of philosophy provides many classical examples of such discussion. The book is of wide general interest. As well as doing service in the classroom, it will also prove its worth within other contexts. It will serve the aims of serious discussion groups, as well as providing a basis for regular and earnest individual study. We hope also that it will find a place with inquiring people of religious faith.
