Book Synopsis Marian Engel’s Notebooks by : Christl Verduyn
Download or read book Marian Engel’s Notebooks written by Christl Verduyn and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marian Engel emerged as a writer during that period in Canada when nationalism increased and “new feminism” dawned. Although she is recognized as a distinguished woman of letters, she has not been widely studied; consequently we know relatively little about her and her craft. The material collected in Marian Engel’s Notebooks: “Ah, mon cahier, écoute...” is a major step in redressing that neglect. Extracts carefully chosen by Christl Verduyn from Marian Engel’s forty-nine notebooks — notebooks Engel began in the late 1940s and which she maintained until her death in 1985 — track Engel’s creative development, illustrate her commitment to the craft of writing and document her growth as a major Canadian writer. The notebooks also portray Engel’s surprising leaps of logic, her fascination with the bizarre, the eclecticism of her reading and the depth and variety of her thinking. Finally, they present moving documentation of a woman facing cancer and early death. Christl Verduyn’s illuminating introductory discussions to each of the notebooks unobtrusively guide us in the reading of these sometimes difficult writings. Marian Engel’s Notebooks: “Ah, mon cahier, écoute...” leaves readers with a vivid sense of Canadian culture during the 1960s and 1970s. It provides insight into the literary life of one of Canada’s significant woman writers, including her connections with other Canadian writers, and will be of special interest to scholars working in the field of literature.
Book Synopsis Daughters of Dusk by : Emma Shelford
Download or read book Daughters of Dusk written by Emma Shelford and published by Emma Shelford. This book was released on 2021-02-28 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Switching bodies was a piece of cake. Too bad my new body is already occupied. I was a successful woman in my mid-fifties, a champion of vulnerable women and a seeker of the arcane. From a troubled past, I earned poise, confidence, and experience. Until an explosion killed me. It’s a shock when a friend’s desperate spell forces my soul into a nearby woman’s dying body, but I won’t say no to fewer aches, unlined skin, and a youthful start for my old ambitions. The problem is, an elemental spirit took possession of that same body during the explosion, and spirits don’t make good roommates. Too bad. He’s not the only one without options. If I can control him—before he controls me—his magical powers will let me harness the power of the wind. Sexy legs and magic to help the downtrodden? Yes, please. All I need now is an outlet for my new talents, and when a secret sisterhood begs me to help them fend off thuggish attackers hellbent on stealing their magical artifact, I’m the only defense against their deepest fears.

Book Synopsis Children as Readers in Children's Literature by : Evelyn Arizpe
Download or read book Children as Readers in Children's Literature written by Evelyn Arizpe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are fascinated by text and we are fascinated by reading. Is this because we are in a time of textual change? Given that young people always seem to be in the vanguard of technological change, questions about what and how they read are the subject of intense debate. Children as Readers in Children’s Literature explores these questions by looking at the literature that is written for children and young people to see what it tells us about them as readers. The contributors to this book are a group of distinguished children’s literature scholars, literacy and media specialists who contemplate the multiple images of children as readers and how they reflect the power and purpose of texts and literacy. Contributors to this wide-ranging text consider: How books shape the readers we become Cognitive and affective responses to representation of books and reading The relationship between love-stories and reading as a cultural activity Reading as ‘Protection and Enlightenment’ Picturebooks as stage sets for acts of reading Readers’ perceptions of a writer This portrayal of books and reading also reveals adults’ beliefs about childhood and literacy and how they are changing. It is a theme of crucial significance in the shaping of future generations of readers given these beliefs influence not only ideas about the teaching of literature but also about the role of digital technologies. This text is a must-read for any individual interested in the importance of keeping literature alive through reading.

Book Synopsis Mark Twain's Notebooks and Journals, Volume III by : Mark Twain
Download or read book Mark Twain's Notebooks and Journals, Volume III written by Mark Twain and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 894 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume III of Mark Twain's notebooks spans the years 1883 to 1891, a period during which Mark Twain's personal fortunes reached their zenith, as he emerged as one of the most successful authors and publishers in American literary history. During these years Life on the Mississippi, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and a Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court appeared, revealing the diversity, depth, and vitality of Mark Twain's literary talents. With his speeches, his public performances, and his lecture tour of 1884/1885, he became the most recognizable of national figures. At the same time, Mark Twain's growing fame and prosperity allowed him to plunge deeply into the business world, a sphere not suited to his erratic energies. He created the subscription publish firm of Charles L. Webster & Company, Which published the most profitable book of its time, the Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant. And he became the primary financial support for the ingenious but imperfectible Paige typesetter. Within a few years both the publishing company and the typesetter had taxed Mark Twain's patience, and pocket, beyond endurance. The near bankruptcy of the publishing firm and the debacle of the typesetter scheme finally resulted in 1891 in a drastic decision--to leave the house in Hartford, Connecticut, which had long been the symbol of Mark Twain's rising fortunes and idyllic family life, and move to Europe for an indefinite period in the hope of reducing the family's living expenses. The Clemens family would never return to the Hartford house, and the European stay would lengthen into an almost unbroken nine years of exile. Mark Twain's notebooks permit an intimate view of this turbulent period, whose triumphs were tempered by intimations of financial disaster and personal bitterness.
