Ihre Sporen finden sich immer im Inneren von Zellen der Nahrpflanze und nie ist ein Myeel zu sehen, von dem sie abgeschnurt sein konnten, ebenso wenig keimen sie zu einem Mycel aus. Hatte man sie in fruhe rer Zeit gekannt, so wurde man sich ihre Entstehung nicht haben anders deuten konnen als durch freie Zellbildung aus dem Seite ihrer Nahrzellen, und sie wurden noch lange der alten vorher erwahnten Lehre zur Stutze gedient haben. Als jedoch De Bary und Woronin im Jahre 1863 das erste Synchytrium entdeckten und in seiner Entwick lung genau verfolgten war die Kenntniss der parasitischen Organis men schon wieder weiter gefordert, wodurch es moglich wurde, den neuentdeckten Schmarotzern sogleich ihre richtige Stelle anzuweisen. Es war durch Alexander Braun eine Familie einfach organisirter chlorophyllfreier Parasiten an Wasserpflanzen entdeckt werden, die Chytridiaceen, von denen einzelne Species ebenfalls im Inneren der Zelle leben, von der sie sich nahren. Sie pflanzen sich durch Sehwarm sporen fort, die sich in die Nahrzelle einbohren. Hier schwellen sie zu einem spharoidalen Korper an, dessen Inhalt bei der Fortpflanzung wieder vollstandigin Sehwarmsporen zerfallt. Man weiß, daß in den Gefäßen Gas vorhanden ist und unter niedrigerem Druck stehtals außerhalb der Pflanze. Es lag nahe, diese Tatsachen in kausalen Zusammenhang mit der Wassersaugung durch die transpirierenden Blattflächen zu bringen. Wollte man aber in dieser Richtung über allgemeine Vermutungen herauskommen, so waren sehr eingehende Ermittelungen über den Grad und die Dauer der Luftverdünnung in den Leitungsbahnen, ferner über ihr Zustandekommen und die Gas wege im Pflanzenkörper überhaupt unerläßlich. Zahlreiche Unter suchungen, besonders in den letzten Jahrzehnten, beschäftigten sich mit diesen Fragen, und doch kann man nicht sagen, daß jetzt auch nur über die wichtigsten Punkte volle Klarheit herrschte. Vielmehr ent hält die Spezialliteratur noch eine Menge inkongruenter, ja einander anscheinend ausschließender Angaben, so daß die Übersicht über den Stand des Problems recht erschwert ist.
