Download or read book A Stranger in the House of God written by John Koessler and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-08-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up the son of agnostics, John Koessler saw a Catholic church on one end of the street and a Baptist on the other. In the no-man’s land between the two, this curious outside wondered about the God they worshipped—and began a lifelong search to comprehend the grace and mystery of God. A Stranger in the House of God addresses fundamental questions and struggles faced by spiritual seekers and mature believers. Like a contemporary Pilgrim’s Progress, it traces the author’s journey and explores his experiences with both charismatic and evangelical Christianity. It also describes his transformation from religious outsider to ordained pastor. John Koessler provides a poignant and often humorous window into the interior of the soul as he describes his journey from doubt and struggle with the church to personal faith

Download or read book Christian Behavior written by John Bunyan and published by Felipe chavarro. This book was released on 2012-02-28 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Bible what are good works? How should they function in a Christian’s life? In this booklet, John Bunyan addresses these and related issues in detail. Citing Titus 3:7-8, he summarizes its message: “they which have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works.” Bunyan goes on to point out several aspects of good works that all believers should know and apply. First, recognize that good works flow from faith and not the other way around. Second, be careful to insure that the works one does are actually good—here Bunyan describes the duties of Christians in the family and other relationships. Third, do not be satisfied with simply a commendable beginning, but continue faithfully in a life of good works. Lastly, Bunyan urges Christians to understand and believe in the doctrine of justification by grace—as a powerful motivation for doing good works.

All you need is a close friendship with God. When you have relational equity with God, you can pray with such audacity that others are like, “You shouldn’t talk to God like that!” But it’s precisely to this kind of illegal praying that Jesus surprisingly invites us. You’re a friend of God—so ditch propriety, forget the rules, throw caution to the wind, and pray illegal prayers.

Book Synopsis Jesus > Religion by : Jefferson Bethke
Download or read book Jesus > Religion written by Jefferson Bethke and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abandon dead, dry, religious rule-keeping and embrace the promise of being truly known and deeply loved. Jefferson Bethke burst into the cultural conversation with a passionate, provocative poem titled "Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus." The 4-minute video became an overnight sensation, with 7 million YouTube views in its first 48 hours (and 23+ million in a year). Bethke's message clearly struck a chord with believers and nonbelievers alike, triggering an avalanche of responses running the gamut from encouraged to enraged. In his New York Times bestseller Jesus > Religion, Bethke unpacks similar contrasts that he drew in the poem--highlighting the difference between teeth gritting and grace, law and love, performance and peace, despair, and hope. With refreshing candor, he delves into the motivation behind his message, beginning with the unvarnished tale of his own plunge from the pinnacle of a works-based, fake-smile existence that sapped his strength and led him down a path of destructive behavior. Along the way, Bethke gives you the tools you need to: Humbly and prayerfully open your mind Understand Jesus for all that he is View the church from a brand-new perspective Bethke is quick to acknowledge that he's not a pastor or theologian, but simply an ordinary, twenty-something who cried out for a life greater than the one for which he had settled. On this journey, Bethke discovered the real Jesus, who beckoned him with love beyond the props of false religion. Praise for Jesus > Religion: "Jeff's book will make you stop and listen to a voice in your heart that may have been drowned out by the noise of religion. Listen to that voice, then follow it--right to the feet of Jesus." --Bob Goff, author of New York Times bestsellers Love Does and Everybody, Always "The book you hold in your hands is Donald Miller's Blue Like Jazz meets C. S. Lewis's Mere Christianity meets Augustine's Confessions. This book is going to awaken an entire generation to Jesus and His grace." --Derwin L. Gray, lead pastor of Transformation Church, author of Limitless Life: Breaking Free from the Labels That Hold You Back

Book Synopsis 5 Marks of a Biblical Church by : C. Matthew McMahon
Download or read book 5 Marks of a Biblical Church written by C. Matthew McMahon and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scripture furnishes Christ’s blood-bought church with everything it needs to worship God effectively with the greatest degree of honor (John 4:24). The holy exaltation of God by his people is vital to giving him high praise in glorifying Christ in their worship before his uncompromising majesty. Such a congregation of holy worshippers have certain qualities that distinguish them from the world. In such a distinction, there are five non-negotiable marks of a biblical church without which, a church unchurches itself. These marks not only aid Christians to discern the nature of a healthy church, but differentiate the Spirit empowered qualities of a biblical church from that which is false. From 1 Tim. 3:14-15, McMahon explains what it means for the church to conduct itself in God’s house, “which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” He biblically and historically sets down the five invariable marks of the church: Mark 1: Biblical Preaching Through Sound Doctrine Mark 2: Biblical Administration of the Sacraments Mark 3: Biblical Administration of Church Discipline Mark 4: Biblical Leadership Mark 5: Biblical Worship
Book Synopsis The Sacralization of Space and Behavior in the Early Modern World by : Jennifer Mara DeSilva
Download or read book The Sacralization of Space and Behavior in the Early Modern World written by Jennifer Mara DeSilva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Early Modern period - as both reformed and Catholic churches strove to articulate orthodox belief and conduct through texts, sermons, rituals, and images - communities grappled frequently with the connection between sacred space and behavior. The Sacralization of Space and Behavior in the Early Modern World explores individual and community involvement in the approbation, reconfiguration and regulation of sacred spaces and the behavior (both animal and human) within them. The individual’s understanding of sacred space, and consequently the behavior appropriate within it, depended on local need, group dynamics, and the dissemination of normative expectations. While these expectations were defined in a growing body of confessionalizing literature, locally and internationally traditional clerical authorities found their decisions contested, circumvented, or elaborated in order to make room for other stakeholders’ activities and needs. To clearly reveal the efforts of early modern groups to negotiate authority and the transformation of behavior with sacred space, this collection presents examples that allow the deconstruction of these tensions and the exploration of the resulting campaigns within sacred space. Based on new archival research the eleven chapters in this collection examine diverse aspects of the campaigns to transform Christian behavior within a variety of types of sacred space and through a spectrum of media. These essays give voice to the arguments, exhortations, and accusations that surrounded the activities taking place in early modern sacred space and reveal much about how people made sense of these transformations.
