Book excerpt: Never fear, just beer! This handy, small-format cookbook is filled with snacking solutions to keep you drinking beer deep into the night (and morning). This is the perfect volume for anybody who enjoys drinking beer and snacking.... So basically, every (adult) human being on Earth. As we all know, beer is enjoyed the world over. And wherever beer is imbibed, there's usually some kind of delicious and salty snack to go with it. We know for a fact that beer has existed at least as early as the fifth millennium BC, so author Oscar Smith's only remaining question is, Why didn't anyone make this book sooner? Beer Snacks starts its journey at smaller snack-y fare like moreish Malaysian ikan bilis, Japanese otsumami, USA-style boiled peanuts, and Mexican chicharrón. These are the sort of tiny bites that are designed to be grabbed by the fistful and basically inhaled, or scooped into the mouth, rather than eaten in any classy sort of way. Beer Snacks then advances to more substantial drinking-friendly food like spicy buffalo wings and currywurst (German), chorizo cooked in cider (Spain), and the ultimate in beer-soaking technology: Canadian poutine. Oscar Smith himself says, "I don't speak Québécois myself, but I can only assume that poutine translates directly to English as 'heaven on our undeserving Earth'." Indeed. Well, finally, Beer Snacks brings you the world's best of what to eat while you drink.

Book excerpt: A cookbook featuring 50 recipes for Thai drinking food--an entire subset of Thai cooking that is largely unknown in the United States yet boasts some of most craveable dishes in the Thai canon, inspired by Andy Ricker's decades in Thailand and his beloved restaurant, Whiskey Soda Lounge. A celebration of the thrill and spirit of Thai drinking food, Andy Ricker's follow-up to Pok Pok brings the same level of authority, with a more laid-back approach. Just as America has salted peanuts, wings, and nachos, Thailand has its own roster of craveable snacks: spicy, salty, and sour, they are perfect accompaniments for a few drinks and the company of good friends. Here, Ricker shares accessible and detailed recipes for his favorites: phat khii mao, a fiery dish known as "Drunkard's stir-fry; kai thawt, Thai-style fried chicken; and thua thawt samun phrai, an addictive combination of fried peanuts with makrut lime leaf, garlic, and chiles. Featuring stories and insights from the Thai cooks who taught Ricker along the way, this book is as fun to read as it is to cook from, and will become a modern classic for any lover of Thai cuisine.

Book excerpt: Three Days in July is the tale of a ten-year journey to discover one's roots. From a London base, I scouted and scoured databases, joined ancestry forums and corresponded with archives in numerous countries, sometimes successfully. However, nothing can compare with understanding the land first hand. Accordingly, when I had time to spare this summer, I flew to Lithuania and rented a car, with a mission to absorb history with the aid of a contemporary personal lens and a smartphone, but no maps. Buy the ticket, take the ride. But wait, there's more. If one portion of the family was daring enough to live in 18th and 19th Century Belarus, I should be plucky enough to experience its 21st Century equivalent, no matter how many concentric mental loop-de-loops this entailed thanks to practice makes perfect bureaucratic madness. I encountered subtle reminders of civilizations past and common small urban emotions from my mostly rural upbringing to go with the tangible memories of understated national day celebrations, baby lambies acclimatizing themselves to the world in nature-ideal manor parks, and Belarusian crickets pleading for mercy in the blistering summer heat, as if all chronicled by an imaginary videographer. This is not your great grandfather's trip down memory lane or a meticulous depiction of a determined genealogy sleuth in for the long haul with nary the light by a miner's helmet to guide him. For one, I couldn't do it that way. For another, I didn't take any notes. This is the fictionalized version and on both counts, I think it's better that way.
