Book excerpt: While sediment transport in steady uniform flows has been studied extensively, significant amount of sediment movement occurs in unsteady flows. A nonhomogeneous discrete-time Markov chain model is proposed in this study to quantify the bedload discharges under unsteady flow conditions. The proposed two-state Markovian bedload model can be further extended to a three-state sediment transport model by adding a suspended load layer as the third state. As opposed to the homogenous two-state Markovian bedload models in literature, the proposed nonhomogeneous Markov chain model ensures the transition probabilities are really time dependent as they are function of local flow conditions. Furthermore, a full model of both the bedload and the suspended load that does not require an equilibrium sediment transport assumption can be achieved by adding a third layer (the suspended load layer) to the existing two-state model. The proposed stochastic sediment transport model can be used to calculate sediment discharges for an arbitrary size fraction of nonuniform sediment. Sediment transport processes vary at a variety of time scales - from seconds, hours, days to months and years. Recognizing the importance of different varying time scales in the fluvial processes of sediment transport, the Hilbert-Huang Transform method (HHT) is introduced to the field of sediment transport for the time scale analysis. The HHT uses the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) method to decompose a time series into a collection of the Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs), and uses the Hilbert Spectral Analysis (HSA) to obtain instantaneous frequency data. The EMD extracts the variability of data with different time scales, and improves the analysis of data series. The HSA can display the succession of time varying time scales, which cannot be captured by the often-used Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method. This study is one of the earlier attempts to introduce the state-of-the-art data analysis technique for the multiple time sales analysis of sediment transport processes. Three practical applications of the HHT method for data analysis of both suspended sediment and bedload transport time series are presented.

Book excerpt: While sediment transport and landscape morphology are well-characterized under the simplifying conditions of steady and uniform inputs, the effects of heterogeneity and unsteadiness are less well-constrained. This dissertation investigates the effects of heterogeneous and fluctuating inputs on upland sediment transport, coastal margin morphology and sediment routing, and turbidity current dynamics and deposition. In my first project, I characterize how cycles of flooding and normal flow influence delta island shape and evolution. Using the Surface Transport and Earth-surface Processes (STEP) Basin, located at the Morphodynamics Lab at the J. J. Pickle Research Center, I determine the morphological effects of mixed transport type, where sediment is alternately suspended and delivered as bedload in floods and normal flow. The cumulative effect of these types of transport forms a flow bifurcation around a delta island. I find that delta islands are a consequence of mixed transports, rather than an invariant consequence of turbulent jet expansion into a still basin. Second, I investigate the effects that surface waves have in affecting turbidity current sediment transport and mixing. I conducted experiments in the Long Flume at the Experimental Sedimentology Lab, running simulated turbidity currents through a wave field. After applying a mixing model, I determine that a wave field fundamentally changes the mixing and turbulent behavior of a turbidity current, leading to an increase in downslope sediment transport. Lastly, I investigate dense tracer particle transport in an experimental fluvial bedform, also in the Long Flume. I find that dense tracer minerals' transport is decoupled from bulk quartz sediment bedload transport. Collectively, these investigations represent a synoptic view of sediment transport and the effect that unsteadiness and heterogeneity have on dynamics of sediment transport and consequent morphology of sedimentary landscapes

It is intended as both a course textbook and as a guide for the practical engineer. It begins begin by describing phenomena such as bed load and suspension transport from a classical perspective. Concepts from turbulent flow regime are introduced to address the limitations of the classical approach to various aspects of sediment transport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediment transport (ST) in unsteady flows is a complex phenomenon that the existing formulae are often invalid to predict. Almost all existing ST formulae assume that sediment transport can be fully determined by parameters in streamwise direction without parameters in vertical direction. Different from this assumption, this paper highlights the importance of vertical motion and the vertical velocity is suggested to represent the vertical motion. A connection between unsteadiness and vertical velocity is established. New formulae in unsteady flows have been developed from inception of sediment motion, sediment discharge to suspension,Äôs Rouse number. It is found that upward vertical velocity plays an important role for sediment transport, its temporal and spatial alternations are responsible for the phase lag phenomenon and bedform formation. Reasonable agreement between the measured and the proposed conceptual model was achieved.

Book excerpt: The effective governance and administration of many aquatic environments requires a detailed understanding of sediment transport and behavioral dynamics. This has both environmental and economic implications, especially where there is any anthropogenic involvement. Sediment Transport - Recent Advances examines sediment transport-related issues in estuarial, coastal, or freshwater environments as well as non-intrusive seismic monitoring of fluid mud, sediment removal from oil storage tanks, and formulae of sediment transport in both unsteady and steady flows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical model for simulating sediment transport in unsteady flow is incomplete in several aspects: first of all, the numerical schemes have been proved suitable for the simulation of flow over rigid bed needs to be reevaluated for unsteady flow over mobile bed; secondly, existing non-equilibrium sediment transport models are empirically developed and therefore lack of consistency regarding the evaluation of the non-equilibrium parameters; thirdly, the sediment transport in various applications have unique features which needs to be considered in the models. Sediment transport in unsteady flows was studied using analytical and numerical methods. A one dimensional (1D) finite volume method (FVM) model was developed. Five popular numerical schemes were implemented into the model and their performances were evaluated under highly unsteady flow condition. A novel physically-based non-equilibrium sediment transport model was established to describe the non-equilibrium sediment transport process. Infiltration effects on flow and sediment transport was included to make the model applicable to simulate irrigation induced soil erosion in furrows. The Laursen (1958) formula was adopted and modified to calculate the erodibility of fine-grain sized soil, and then verified by laboratory and field datasets. The numerical model was applied to a series of simulations of sediment transport in highly unsteady flow including the dam break erosional flow, flash flood in natural rivers and irrigation flows and proved to be applicable in various applications. The first order schemes were able to produce smooth and reasonably accurate results, and spurious oscillations were observed in the simulated results produced by second order schemes. The proposed non-equilibrium sediment transport model yielded better results than several other models in the literatures. The modified Laursen (1958) formula adopted was applicable in calculating the erodibility of the soil in irrigation. Additionally, it was indicated that the effect of the jet erosion and the structural failure of the discontinuous bed topography cannot be properly accounted for due to the limitation of 1D model. The comparison between the simulated and measured sediment discharge hydrographs indicated a potential process associated to the transport of the fine-grain sized soil in the irrigation furrows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediment transport is a book that covers a wide variety of subject matters. It combines the personal and professional experience of the authors on solid particles transport and related problems, whose expertise is focused in aqueous systems and in laboratory flumes. This includes a series of chapters on hydrodynamics and their relationship with sediment transport and morphological development. The different contributions deal with issues such as the sediment transport modeling; sediment dynamics in stream confluence or river diversion, in meandering channels, at interconnected tidal channels system; changes in sediment transport under fine materials, cohesive materials and ice cover; environmental remediation of contaminated fine sediments. This is an invaluable interdisciplinary textbook and an important contribution to the sediment transport field. I strongly recommend this textbook to those in charge of conducting research on engineering issues or wishing to deal with equally important scientific problems.
