Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lyrical picture book biography of Edward White, the first American to walk in space--and an ode to the beauty and wonder of the stars that brought him there. Edward White loved the night, lived where stars were big and bright. The evening sky-- so wide, so high. Made him wonder. Made him sigh. Edward White was the first American astronaut to walk in space. But before his spacewalk, he was just a boy who loved the stars. As he grew up, he would look up at the night sky in wonder--he knew that, one day, he would visit the stars themselves. In this touching and poignant picture book biography, we see how Edward's passion for the stars shaped the course of his life, and how he came to realize, even in the depths of space, what was ultimately most important to him--his family. With backmatter containing photos and more information on Edward's life, Candy Wellins and Courtney Dawson deliver a book that is as much a feast for readers' eyes as the stars were for Edward's. Praise for The Stars Beckoned: "The right stuff for children with the stars in their eyes." --Kirkus Reviews "An introduction to a space pioneer that’s ideal for the youngest nonfiction readers." --Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: The pharaonic concept of afterlife becomes reality in the Earth-imitation world of Ormuzad, where the post-mortem brain of Gausifer, an interstellar despot preserved in liquid Nitrogen, is kept functioning via linkage to an omnipotent computer. This demonic mind spawns the creatures of classical mythology through genetic engineering, generates holographic phantoms, fiats breeding and tyrannizes over a population of submissive humans. In this world of lush paradises and horrific infernos, Tristan and Miranda, a betrothed couple within a population matrix, reach adulthood having been raised in a state of computerized ignorance. As newlyweds, they journey throughout the biospheres, witnessing amazing and often terrifying truths about the world they live in. Innocent and kind-hearted, the couple discovers the evil nature of Gausifer, who stages human sacrifices in the form of gladiatorial spectacles and uploads computerized egos of the slain onto the omnipotent mainframe. Choosing good over evil, Tristan and Miranda valiantly resist the Totalitarian Will.

Early Reviews Easily a new classic Normally I either power read through an entire book or read it over a month as a casual read. This story captured me from the first chapter, I had to force myself to stop halfway through it to digest the concepts and story. Upon restarting it the next day I found that I was even re-reading a couple of chapters from before where I left off just to refresh my memory so I did not miss a single nuance of the story. I loved it!!! From the concept to your descriptive writing, you had me hooked from the beginning. Yes, space-themed novels appeal to me, but I am sure anyone could find something they love about this book. The Plot Thickens I loved the book! The storyline was great. The characters believable. I really liked the characters of Jason, Seattle, and Tinker. Mu-monk was absolutely the best character to me! Can't wait till the next book. I really hope this is the start of a great series.

Book excerpt: This story reveals the remarkable life of a Native American boy named Wassaja, or "Beckoning," who was kidnapped from his Yavapai tribe and sold as a slave. Adopted by an Italian photographer in 1871 and renamed Carlos Montezuma, the young boy traveled throughout the Old West, bearing witness to the prejudice against and poor treatment of Native Americans. Carlos eventually became a doctor and leader for his people, calling out for their rights. Gina Capaldi's exquisite paintings bring to life excerpts from Dr. Carlos Montezuma's own letters describing his childhood experiences. The culminating portrait provides an inventive look back into history through the eyes of a Native American hero.
