Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beautiful Stories About Children To The Young Reader: Charles Dickens was one of the greatest among the many story-writers of "the Victorian age;" that is, the middle and latter part of the Nineteenth Century, when Victoria was Queen of Great Britain. Perhaps he was the greatest of them all for now, a generation after he passed away, more people read the stories of Dickens than those by any other author of that period. In those wonderful writings are found many pictures of child-life connected with the plan of the novels or stories. These child-stories have been taken out of their connections and are told by themselves in this volume. By and by you will read for yourselves, "The Christmas Carol," "The Chimes," "David Copperfield," "The Old Curiosity Shop," and the other great books by that fascinating writer, who saw people whom nobody else ever saw, and made them real. This was a story that was created when I took my niece to college. A dragonfly decided to ride most of the day with us from one stop to the next. I thought it would make a cute children’s story. The Heavenly Patch. My granddaughter developed an eye irritation and had to wear a patch on her eye reluctantly. I thought it would be the awesome opportunity to discuss how God allows both good and bad things to grow but in the end only lets the good shine through. Why Oh Why. My grandchildren are always asking the question why. I thought it would be a great opportunity to put a play on words that would grab children’s attention and keep them interested. Basketball Joe on the Go. When my son was little, he loved to play basketball. It’s still his sport today. It was at the point that he would sleep with his basketball just to get a head start on the next day. I thought it would be fun to create a fun way to look at Joseph without his basketball and the perception of others who always associated him with what was attached to him. A Yellow Bird on my Shoulder. This story gives a glimpse of my grandson’s day in the park when he was introduced to a few birds, in particular, this yellow bird who decided to stop and chat with him for a while. It was an opportunity how children and animals connect in a way without words. Three Daddy Stories. Daddy, Can You Swing with Me? Daddy, Do You Talk to God? and Daddy, I Love You are all three stories that give insight into the important roles dads play and how children connect with them. I was thinking of my grandchildren and their relationship with their dad. Breathe a Rhyme NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana). This story in particular is really dear to my heart. It’s a play on words with rhyme and rhythm. It’s a call for the city of New Orleans to relax and feel the rhythm of the city. It was written especially for the children, given all the social ills and barriers that prevent them from being children as a part of my Breathe a Rhyme NOLA project for school-age children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Children's Stories in American History" by Henrietta Christian Wright is a compilation of juvenile stories. It reveals the discovery and exploration of the US. Some interesting topics include The Northmen, Hernando Cortez and the Conquest of Mexico, Columbus and the Discovery of America, and The Story of Acadia. Excerpt: "Many ages ago in North America, there was no spring or summer or autumn, but only winter all the time; there were no forests or fields or flowers, but only ice and snow, which stretched from the Arctic Ocean to Maryland. Sometimes the climate would grow a little warmer, and then the great glaciers would shrink toward the north, and then again it would grow cold, while the ice crept southward; but finally, it became warmer and warmer until all the southern part of the country was quite free from the ice and snow, which could then only be seen, as it is now, in the Polar regions."

As the title suggests, the stories make the children believe that they are unique and beautiful just the way they are. They do not need to change themselves according to the likeness of other people. The fantasy stories teach them the importance of standing up for themselves. Each of the stories is based in fantasy lands, as magnificent as they can be, with hidden meanings behind every action of the protagonists which are revealed as the stories proceed. The book is assigned chronologically, with colorful illustrations which are attractive and eye-catchy. Beautiful Inside and Out is a complete children's book with the genre--fantasy and fiction. Each story has a different lesson to teach. They are based on different subjects, like color discrimination, mannerisms, bullying, sharing, animosity, self-confidence, respecting parents, prejudice, religion, love, and simplicity. The stories remain very unconventional, modern, distinctive and groundbreaking, with characters ranging from kings, princes, princesses, town girls and boys. The author's style is both formal and informal. It closely connects to the intended audience with unabridged metaphors and picturesque imagery. The language of the author is not only understandable, but also provides more scope for young children to learn new words, phrases and meanings. The stories are convincing, and realistic. They do not seem fictitious and easily fit in today's world. The most impacting lines from the book are quoted as, "I understood that some things take time, but when we work towards it diligently, it's unobstructed. Win it or lose it, don't forget to try hard until you fetch it."
