Book excerpt: IN A HAVEN FOR FALLEN WOMEN, HAS HISTORY’S MOST DEPRAVED KILLER RISEN AGAIN? The Back Bay has been filled in. Palm readers and prostitutes ply their trade in South Cove. And the watchword of the day is “NINA:” No Irish Need Apply. Boston in 1892 is a town of Victorian pride, prejudice, and private passions. Now, on Beacon Hill, a crusading woman and her genteel brother, Addington, are investigating two grisly murders of young women, the work, say police, of “a deranged person.” For Caroline Ames, solving the mystery is a matter of helping an old friend, the woman who runs a home for wayward women known as Bertram’s Bower. But for Addington, the investigation will lead to the revelations of a sexually alluring, scandal-struck actress...and to the secrets of some of Boston’s most “respectable” men. As Addington confronts the hypocrisy of Brahmin society, he moves closer to a shocking suspicion about the killer’s identity. And as fear grips the city, the evidence points in one frightening direction: that London’s Jack the Ripper is alive, well, and killing again. . .

Book excerpt: Protect and Serve. A police service motto and words every cop lives by. Protect the public and serve the law. What it doesn’t tell you is how to protect yourself. Jim Grant is back in Boston, now a fully-fledged member of the Boston PD based at Jamaica Plain. Working the nightshift for Sam Kincaid should have been an easy job but after saving a kidnapped child from a blazing house and attending a drive-by shooting in Beacon Hill, it proves to be anything but. The trouble is the wealthy target, Daniel Hunt, doesn’t want to complain and Grant’s bosses try and shut him down. But Grant isn’t one for shutting down and it doesn’t take him long to discover that Hunt wasn’t the intended target. After a foiled robbery and a squashed dog, the case turns personal and then the stakes really go through the roof. Praise for BEACON HILL: “Campbell’s Beacon Hill is a great tale of violence and intrigue, stretching across the Atlantic and back again. In it, Jim Grant proves he is the real deal.” —Reed Farrel Coleman, New York Times bestselling author

Book excerpt: My fascination with teenagers began when I was nine, and never entirely disappeared, even after living through the teens myself, even after having grown up enough to be thankful those years were behind me. My early influences undoubtedly contributed to this, as I grew up during the accent on youth culture of the late 1960s and the 1970s. Much of my continuing fascination with the tumultuous state of adolescence, the time of being neither a child nor an adult, is linked to my livelihood: I teach in an urban high school. Thus, I am surrounded by teens all the time. I am a natural storyteller, and when I decided to teach, I chose a graduate school program in which storytelling was highly respected and encouraged as a teaching tool. As a result, storytelling became an integral part of my teaching strategy. I have employed storytelling in every teaching position I have held. My nieces and nephews have looked forward to Aunt SaSa (myself) telling stories since they were tiny. Now the older ones are moving into adolescence. As a loving aunt, I want to be on the front lines of teaching them how to make good choices, and to keep themselves safe from bad influences. I have held teenage attention consistently by incorporating elements of my own adolescence into my stories. I have stressed that it is okay to make a mistake, because experience is the best, and the toughest, teacher. I follow with the sentiment, Try not to make the same mistake twice! I do deal in fiction; this is apparent to adults I grew up with who read my jaunty witticisms and follow the flawless judgment in my stories that they know for a fact I didnt have at that age! Yet, because there is a strong circle of love that exists for me, I know they will never give my young audience that word to the wise about SaSa!

Book excerpt: Amateur sleuths Caroline and Addington Ames venture to “the other side”–the world of restless and vengeful spirits–to solve some very real flesh-and-blood crimes in Victorian Boston in the third volume of Cynthia Peale’s acclaimed Beacon Hill mystery series. When Caroline Ames makes the daring decision to visit a medium, she keeps it a secret from her older brother, Addington. Ever the rationalist, Addington has made his disapproval of Boston society’s recent infatuation with spiritualists quite clear. Fervently hoping to contact their mother, Caroline has asked Dr. McKenzie, the Ameses’ boarder and dear friend, to accompany her to a séance held by Mrs. Sidgwick, reputed to be the best medium in Boston. Mrs. Sidgwick’s powers prove to be quite amazing: Although she is unable to reach Mrs. Ames, she miraculously fulfills the expectations of others attending the séance. Among them is Theophilus Clay, a well-known and much-beloved philanthropist who receives a message from his late wife–and is immediately struck dead right in Mrs. Sidgwick’s parlor. The police quickly determine that Clay’s death was not the result of a heart attack brought on by excitement, but cold-blooded murder. At the request of an old friend of his father’s, Addington agrees to help clear Mrs. Sidgwick’s name. Despite his certainty that all mediums are charlatans, Addington is badly shaken when Mrs. Sidgwick receives the ominous message “Ames next” and Caroline is pushed in the path of a horse and narrowly escapes death. Addington’s conversation with William James at Harvard does little to reassure him. In James’s learned opinion, “Even if there were no other medium in the world who had her powers, she alone proves that such powers exist. I put it this way: If you seek to prove that all crows are not black, you need only one white crow. And Mrs. Sidgwick is my white crow.” But Addington needs more solid proof before he is willing to accept that Mrs. Sidgwick’s connections to Clay’s murder and Caroline’s near-fatal accident defy rational explanation. Like the previous books in the Beacon Hill series, The White Crow perfectly captures the atmosphere of Victorian Boston and uncovers the dark secrets harbored by some of its respectable citizens. Cynthia Peale’s many fans are in for a double treat in this volume: Interwoven in the intriguing tale of murder and deception is the delightful story of the love that blossoms between Caroline and Dr. McKenzie.

Book excerpt: "Death on Beacon Hill continues Ms. Ryan's excellent Nell Sweeney series. The rich characterization and her strong evocation of place, coupled with a well-plotted tale, make for a rich story. Add a clever conclusion and Ms. Ryan delivers a fascinating read." -Fresh Fiction Boston, 1869: As governess to the wealthy Hewitts, Irish immigrant Nell Sweeney belongs to no particular caste-hers is halfway between her brethren and the Brahmin. But now, a double murder involves both maid and mistress-and it will take cooperation by rich and poor alike to solve it. All of Boston is talking about the murder of Virginia Kimball. The famous actress, past her prime but still a renowned beauty, was found shot to death in her Beacon Hill townhouse, along with her young Irish-American maid, Fiona Gannon. Evidence suggests the two women traded shots after Virginia came upon Fiona trying to steal her famous diamond necklaces. Devastated by this news, Fiona's uncle, who serves as driver to the wealthy Hewitts, begs Nell to find out what really happened. The Hewitts' estranged son, Will, accompanies Nell as she investigates Virginia's scandalous romantic liaisons. It turns out there are quite a few people who might have wanted her dead, particularly her rich and powerful lovers, whose amorous exploits she recorded in a red leather-bound journal-a journal that has been missing ever since her death. Now, terrified men all over Boston, once blackmailed by the actress, will do whatever it takes to make sure her infamous "Red Book" never sees the light of day. Originally published by Berkley Prime Crime. 64K words. "I decided to start the year off with my favorite mystery series. The mystery itself-what really happened that afternoon at Mrs. Kimball's and who killed her and her maid-kept me guessing....Highly recommend the series." -Babbling Book Reviews "[Nell is] intelligent and has a strong sense of justice....She only takes action after careful consideration, never rushing to throw herself in harm's way....They mystery consists of several layers, and is constructed quite well....It's clear from the beginning that things are not as they seem; this serves to keep the reader interested in ferreting out the clues alongside Nell. I'm looking forward to another installment." -The Romance Reader's Connection

But not everyone in town has a sweet tooth. The preservation society won’t have the lighthouse’s history sugar coated by lattes and cakes—and a protest group crashes Lindsey’s Memorial Day opening. Then her ex-fiancé Jeffrey Plank and his girlfriend Mia Long arrive to trash the place. In the ensuing chaos Mia chokes on a donut and dies. An autopsy reveals cyanide in Mia’s bloodstream and Lindsey is the police’s prime suspect. To clear her name, she’s going to need to combine ingredients found in the town’s checkered past to uncover the identity of a desperate killer . . . Includes Delicious Recipes! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to the main body of current Victorian detective criticism, which tends to concentrate on Conan Doyle’s creation and only uses other detectives as a backdrop, the texts gathered in this volume examine various contemporary ways of (re)presenting real and fictional detectives that originated in or are otherwise associated with that era: Inspector Bucket, Sergeant Cuff, Inspector Reid, Tobias Gregson, Flaxman Low, and psychiatrists as detectives. Such a collection allows for a critical re-assessment of both the detectives’ importance to the Victorian literature and culture and provides a better basis for understanding the reasons behind their contemporary returns, re-imaginings and re-creations, contributing to the creation of a base for further cultural and critical works dealing with reworkings of the Victorian era.
