Book excerpt: This report contains the results of a national survey conducted by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (naep) during the 1985-86 school year. The report, which attempts to capture the interacting forces influencing computer competence among students, is presented in six chapters: (1) Overview (major findings, significance of this assessment, and importance of computer competence); (2) Assessing Computer Competence (I.E., knowledge of computer technology, computer applications, and computer programming); (3) Attitudes, Instruction, and Access (student attitudes toward computers, experience with computers, computer use in the school, and computer use outside the school); (4) Computer Competence among Subgroups (E.G., gender, race/ethnicity, parental education, public/non-public education, and community and religion); (5) Computer Coordinators (their characteristics, teaching activities, professional experience and training, and professional confidence); and (6) Implications. The major findings of this survey indicate that access to a computer at home is positively related to computer competence; students like using computers; computers are seldom used in subject areas such as reading, math, or science; males demonstrate more competence than females; racial differences exist, favoring white students over black students; computer competence is increased for students whose parents went to college, who attend non-public schools, and who live in the northeast; and many computer coordinators have minimal training in computer studies. Sample survey questions are provided in each area and the results are reported in tables and graphs as well as in narrative form. A description of the methodology of the study is appended. Numerous charts and graphs are included, and a procedural appendix concludes the document. (Db).

Computers are used effectively across the sector and this use is increasing. A range of new issues have emerged in consequence. This practical book draws on direct industrial experience and examines the role of IT within a range of enterprises operating in the construction and property industry. Emphasis is given to the human side of IT and the effects of the implementation of IT systems on them. The functionality of the IT systems is considered, as is the design brief and the operation of the applications. Case reviews of a range of applications are discussed and issues arising from their implementation are explored. Pitfalls, benefits and experience shapers are reviewed and presented systematically so the reader can consider these in the light of their own experience. Outlining key drivers for advanced students and for professionals who may have to face these issues in the future, Implementing IT in Construction clearly presents the value of IT implementation and the benefits of a number of IT applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An annual prize is awarded for the best paper appearing in Accounting Education: an international journal, and this book contains the prize-winning papers for every year from 1992 to 2012. The journal’s primary mission since the first issue was published in March 1992 has been to enhance the educational base of accounting practice, and all the papers in this book relate to that mission. These papers, reporting on research studies undertaken by accounting education scholars from around the world, build on research findings from the broader domain of education scholarship and embrace a wide array of topics – including: curriculum development, pedagogic innovation, improving the quality of learning, and assessing learning outcomes. Of particular interest are three themes, each of which runs through several of the papers: students’ approaches to learning and learning style preferences; ethics and moral intensity; and innovation within the accounting curriculum. Accounting educators will find many ideas in the book to help them in enriching their work, and accounting education researchers will be able to identify many points of departure for extending the studies on which the papers report – whether comparatively or longitudinally. This book is a compilation of papers originally published in Accounting Education: an international journal.

Book excerpt: This work contributes to entrepreneurship research and offers practical implications for entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship promotors by critically analyzing a networked approach to value creation processes of young knowledge-intensive entrepreneurial firms and assessing precise strategies and tactics for entrepreneurial firms to exploit these structures. In this context the concept of co-innovation competence is introduced and empirically analyzed. Results indicate that entrepreneurs follow a specific approach towards networking minimizing transaction costs taking an on-demand-based perspective of networking. In this case entrepreneurs may relate to regional innovation promotors and also reach beyond regional structures to explore suitable partners and exploit structural holes.

Book excerpt: Computers are complex tools of the human species. To make them work well for us, we have to specify their actions in very great detail. When properly instructed, networks of computers take on the trappings of human social orders derived from the physiological characteristics and capabilities of our species. To create a social order, we engage in grouping mechanisms through which the actions of the individuals within the group are influenced. From a technical perspective, such grouping mechanisms form the trust environments within which we can effect policy. Historically, the most comprehensive such environments have been formed by religions. Within a specific religion, the policy framework is established by a statement of theology. So, if we connect all the dots, when we want to tell our computers how to act in a manner paralleling human social orders, we must define for them a theology. So goes the rationale explored in great detail by the authors of Computer Theology. Based on their combined tenure of almost a century working in the realms of computer systems and their ubiquitous networks, du Castel and Jurgensen have expressed both social and computer systems through the same concepts. The result offers a unique perspective on the interconnection between people and machines that we have come to understand as the World Wide Web.
