Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battering States explores the most personal part of people's lives as they intersect with a uniquely complex state system. The book examines how statecraft shapes domestic violence: how a state defines itself and determines what counts as a family; how a state establishes sovereignty and defends its borders; and how a state organizes its legal system and forges its economy. The ethnography includes stories from people, places, and perspectives not commonly incorporated in domestic violence studies, and, in doing so, reveals the transformation of intimate partner violence from a predictable form of marital trouble to a publicly recognized social problem. The politics of domestic violence create novel entry points to understanding how, although women may be vulnerable to gender-based violence, they do not necessarily share the same kind of belonging to the state. This means that markers of identity and power, such as gender, nationality, ethnicity, religion and religiosity, and socio-economic and geographic location, matter when it comes to safety and pathways to justice. The study centers on Israel, where a number of factors bring connections between the cultural politics of the state and domestic violence into stark relief: the presence of a contentious multinational and multiethnic population; competing and overlapping sets of religious and civil laws; a growing gap between the wealthy and the poor; and the dominant presence of a security state in people's everyday lives. The exact combination of these factors is unique to Israel, but they are typical of states with a diverse population in a time of globalization. In this way, the example of Israel offers insights wherever the political and personal impinge on one another.

Book excerpt: Created to be used as a workbook by men in domestic violence group counseling, this book presents a solid, interactive, and comprehensive treatment tool. If you are a group leader, this guide will provide you with a supplement to your group instruction. Like the previous editions, it is designed to be used with a wide variety of accepted curricula for domestic violence intervention programs. Interactive lessons and exercises cover important topics such as respect and accountability, maintaining positive relationships, good communication, parenting, and the role of religion in recovery. For this new edition, the authors used feedback from group leaders and participants to update, remove, and adjust exercises, and to design new ones. A chapter on the role of drugs and alcohol in domestic violence has been added, as well as new "tool" exercises that will help group members learn new skills and modify and apply them to their lives. If you are a group member, you will find this book to be a valuable supplement to the work you do in group. In it, personal stories from men who were in a group just like you will show you how they have both found success and failed, giving you the opportunity to learn from both. Interactive exercises will enhance your participation in group, and homework assignments will allow you to continue your learning outside of group. Additionally, new "tool" exercises will teach you new skills and how you can apply them in your life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Whether you’re an individual woman looking for help or a reader looking for the truth about the thousands of women who are battered by the men they live with, Next Time, She’ll Be Dead is the one book you should read.” —Gloria Steinem At least 1 in 4 women will be abused during her lifetime—that is 25% of our mothers, daughters, sisters, partners, and friends. Thousands will be killed. As author Ann Jones observes, despite its devastation battering is regarded not as a serious crime, but instead as an inevitable “problem” blandly labeled “domestic violence.” Stories of household assaults and murders are all over the news, but the blame is usually pinned on the woman who is said to have either provoked the attack or failed to “leave.” In this groundbreaking book, Jones points instead to the many factors in society that promote, trivialize, and perpetuate brutality against women: from popular psychology, academic “expertise,” mass media, and pop culture, to the criminal justice system and the law itself. Delving deep into the history, legality, and personal politics of male violence against wives and girlfriends, Next Time, She’ll Be Dead fearlessly reframes the issue. This critically acclaimed masterwork offers productive ways of thinking and speaking about battering and explains what must be done to stop it.

The new edition adds and revises the exercises and stories in every chapter, covering important areas including respect and accountability, maintaining positive relationships, parenting, substance abuse, and sexuality. Innovative chapters explore parenting, religion, communication, and substance abuse, and deepen readers’ understanding of controlling behavior. Chapters incorporate discussion of digital and internet-based abuse, and a new "Voice of My Partner" exercise has been added to core chapters to encourage group members to explore the impact of their behavior and learn and practice empathy-focused skills. Continuing the tradition of past editions, this edition not only focuses on the content of a good BIPP curriculum, but it also stresses the group process elements that form the backbone of any quality approach. Intimate partner violence group leaders and members will find this workbook to be a vital resource for adopting new strategies to lead a life of cooperation and shared power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women battering is one of the most pervasive and dangerous problems in American society today. An estimated 8.7 million women fall victim to violence in their own homes each year. Helping Battered Women provides students with the most current, empirically-based and realistic overview of policies and intervention methods, combining a rich array of perspectives by internationally recognized professors and scholars in the fields of social work, criminology, and clinical psychology. The authors provide cogent and clear arguments for advocacy and social change in such places as battered women's shelters, police precincts, state legislatures, family courts, and criminal courts. The book focuses on a full range of policies and programs which include case management service models, 24-hour hotlines and crisis intervention programs, social worker-police collaboration, mandated arrest of batterers, electronic technology, and group/play therapy for the children of battered women, methods which are all effective in breaking the inter-generational cycle of abuse.
