Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Her face is simply unmistakable as the council house based brothel madam, Lillian, in Channel 4's long running brilliant cult drama 'Shameless,' based on a Manchester sink estate. By her own admission not exactly the Bridget Bardot of the North West, she is fiercely and unapologetically proud of her working class roots and the many obstacles she has overcome in forging an acting career. In her long awaited autobiography she details her almost barbaric treatment as a youngster during her formative school years at the hands of bigoted bullies, both pupils and teachers alike. She describes how one day after being beaten for being a Catholic in the morning and beaten for being a protestant in the afternoon, she eventually fought back. It was a turning point in Alice's life. She became a rebel and beat one of the bullies so badly she ended up in hospital. Not surprisingly they never bothered her again. Who the Hell is Alice? is deep and personal, warts and all. The humour of Alice Barry shines like a beacon on every page but she also shares with the reader her real life tragedies such as the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of her brother Tommy and her husband Terry. Her current relationship with her partner Jeff is also well documented too. They love and respect each other, of that there is no doubt. The only slight twist in their magical bond is that Jeff is gay and their relationship is purely a plutonic one. Alice also takes the reader onto the set of Shameless. The long running Channel 4 show is quite simply a phenomenon and has been an on-going part of her life for over nine years. Alice talks at length about the entire team and her special relationship with Sally Carmen (Kelly Maguire) David Threlfall (Frank Gallagher) Jack Deam (Marty) and Elliott Tittensor (Carl Gallagher.)

If any man needs a vacation, it is Sherlock Holmes. But Watson knows better than to expect a peaceful fishing trip. As it happens, Holmes has dragged Watson to Scotland not for the fishing—but for a party. The celebration is hosted by John Moxton, an American muckraker who has recently expanded his tabloid empire across the pond. When his paper, the Clarion, turns out to be one step ahead of Holmes in investigating a baffling series of crimes, the detective suspects that Moxton isn’t just breaking the news—he’s making it.

Book excerpt: “We Were Brothers, Barry Moser's beautiful--and beautifully illustrated--new book, tells the wrenching and redeeming story of brothers who take different paths and yet ultimately find their ways back to each other . . . Their careful reconciliation after decades of strife and avoidance is sad, moving, and joyful all at the same time." —Andrew Hudgins, author ofThe Joker Preeminent illustrator Barry Moser and his brother, Tommy, were born of the same parents, were raised in the same small Tennessee community, and were poisoned by their family's deep racism and anti-Semitism. But as they grew older, their perspectives and their paths grew further and further apart. From attitudes about race, to food, politics, and money, the brothers began to think so differently that they could no longer find common ground, no longer knew how to talk to each other, and for years there was more strife between them than affection. When Barry was in his late fifties and Tommy in his early sixties, their fragile brotherhood reached a tipping point and blew apart. From that day forward they did not speak. But fortunately, their story does not end there. With the raw emotions that so often surface when we talk of our siblings, Barry recalls why and how they were finally able to traverse that great divide and reconcile their kinship before it was too late. Including fifteen of Moser's stunning drawings, this powerful true story captures the essence of sibling relationships--their complexities, contradictions, and mixed blessings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alice beyond Wonderland explores the ubiquitous power of Lewis Carroll’s imagined world. Including work by some of the most prominent contemporary scholars in the field of Lewis Carroll studies, all introduced by Karoline Leach’s edgy foreword, Alice beyond Wonderland considers the literary, imaginative, and cultural influences of Carroll’s 19th-century story on the high-tech, postindustrial cultural space of the twenty-first century. The scholars in this volume attempt to move beyond the sexually charged permutations of the "Carroll myth," the image of an introverted man fumbling into literary immortality through his love for a prepubescent Alice. Contributions include an essay comparing Dantean and Carrollian underworlds, one investigating child characters as double agents in untamed lands, one placing Wonderland within the geometrical and algebraic “fourth dimension,” one investigating the visual and verbal interplay of hand imagery, and one exploring the influence of Japanese translations of Alice on the Gothic-Lolita subculture of neo-Victorian enthusiasts. This is a bold, capacious, and challenging work.

Book excerpt: This comic, serious inquiry into the nature of art takes its technical vocabulary from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. It is ridiculous to think of poems, paintings, or films as distinct from other things in the world, including people. Talking about art should be contiguous with talking about other relevant matters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I’m drenched in cream, marinated in wine, basted in cognac, and thoroughly buttered by the end of The Alice B. Toklas Cook Book.” —Eula Biss, New York Times bestselling author of Having and Being Had A beautiful new edition of the classic culinary memoir by Alice B. Toklas, Gertrude Stein’s romantic partner, with a new introduction by beloved culinary voice Ruth Reichl. Restaurant kitchens have long been dominated by men, but, as of late, there has been an explosion of interest in the many women chefs who are revolutionizing the culinary game. And, alongside that interest, an accompanying appetite for smart, well-crafted culinary memoirs by female trailblazers in food. Nearly 70 years earlier, there was Alice. When Alice B. Toklas was asked to write a memoir, she initially refused. Instead, she wrote The Alice B. Toklas Cook Book, a sharply written, deliciously rich cookbook memorializing meals and recipes shared by Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Wilder, Matisse, and Picasso—and of course by Alice and Gertrude themselves. While The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas—penned by Gertrude Stein—adds vivid detail to Alice’s life, this cookbook paints a richer, more joyous depiction: a celebration of a lifetime in pursuit of culinary delights. In this cookbook, Alice supplies recipes inspired by her travels, accompanied by amusing tales of her and Gertrude’s lives together. In “Murder in the Kitchen,” Alice describes the first carp she killed, after which she immediately lit up a cigarette and waited for the police to come and haul her away; in “Dishes for Artists,” she describes her hunt for the perfect recipe to fit Picasso’s peculiar diet; and, of course, in “Recipes from Friends,” she provides the recipe for “Haschich Fudge,” which she notes may often be accompanied by “ecstatic reveries and extensions of one’s personality on several simultaneous planes.” With a heartwarming introduction from Gourmet’s famed Editor-in-Chief Ruth Reichl, this much-loved, culinary classic is sure to resonate with food lovers and literary folk alike.

Book excerpt: The Woman Was a Devil is a page-turner about a forty-year old virgin who passed her time as an antique collector until she discovered a mysterious Gauguin painting. This brought her into contact with a fraudulent curator who turned out to be a devilish woman. Suddenly three men become her love life-a lawyer, famous country western singer, and a handsome cad with an inheritance. Her steady companion is her faithful dog, a Yorkshire terrier. Women friends turn on her, but two old friends who were early school mates come to her aid. One lovable curator helps her use her knowledge of antiques to find her way out of a great quandary. The world of antiques revealing American history, auctions, charlatans and odd characters make this fascinating story even more intriguing. The mystery begins in a small Pennsylvania town just after World War II but reaches out to include Washington, D.C., the National Gallery, the Smithsonian, the Willard Hotel, Georgetown, and Las Vegas, as well as Dublin, Ireland.
