Book excerpt: Bambusa guadua, the tropical giant bamboo, is the most versatile, reliable architectural material of its native mountainous regions. Bamboo's delightful exterior and exotic reputation obscures its oaklike strength. 'New Bamboo' is a colour portfolio of contemporary structures and decorative designs demonstrating the appeal of building with natural materials for the modern eye. Properly treated, bamboo is as reliable as prime-grade hardwoods, beautiful in its own right, and suitable for commercial and residential structures in any climate. This is an anthology of bamboo construction by different experts: an agronomist, architects, a designer, and a builder, that showcases projects in Mexico, Brazil, Ecuador, Panama, and Colombia, where this product has been used as a traditional construction material for centuries. Also covered are France and Germany, where architects are discovering the delights of working with bamboo. Guadua is beautiful but not so delicate that it cannot be used in commercial structures like the auditorium-size pavilion built for the Hannover Expo 2000. Here are delightful details and rugged outbuildings that show bamboo as a most natural design element.

Today it is gaining in popularity also among Western architects and engineers due to its reputation of a quickly replenishing and therefore sustainable raw material. In addition, its tensile as well as compressive strength, which can compete with those of steel, stone and concrete, make bamboo a very desirable construction material. The range extends from traditional building styles and their modern interpretation to the combination of bamboo with other materials. Frequently, beyond its use for purely construction purposes it also serves as a primary design element. This volume presents contemporary projects that show the impressive versatility of its usage"--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: Perhaps the most enduring image of the China Trade is the clipper ship carrying tea from China. In 1869 the clippers were finally overshadowed by the introduction of steam vessels which could make passage through the Suez Canal, significantly shortening the length of the voyage. Letters, journals and order books have survived which tell us about the traders, their private trading activities, motivation, tastes and private lives. This book examines the role played by the port of Liverpool in this time of great change. The book examines Liverpool's early participation in the China Trade following the cessation of the British East India Company's monopoly of the trade in 1834 and maps the changes in artistic tastes that the commencement of free trade gave rise to. These new tastes represented a true fusion of European and Chinese cultural influences and replaced the pastiche of 'The Orient' that chinoiserie represented during the period of the monopoly.--Amazon.com.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, a collection of ancient Chinese cultural relics, deals with relics from Qing Dynasty, 1644 to 1911. There are two volumes dealing with relics in this period. This book contains 377 relics. The ancestors of the people who established the Manchu Qing Dynasty lived in northeast China in the territory lying between the 'white mountains and the black rivers'. After establishing their capital in Beijing. the Qing Dynasty defeated all the forces that opposed them and they quickly consolidated their frontier defences. in the nearly 300 years of the Qing Dynasty, China achieved some remarkable things especially in the fields of culture and art even though it lagged behind in many other respects in global terms. Jade ware reached a great peak in the mid Qing Dynasty and surpassed previous achievement in size, selection of materials and overall craftsmanship. Porcelain production reached its highest ever peak in this era. Jingdezhen remained the centre for production of porcelain. The period also saw the revival in the history of Chinese calligraphy. Stone inscriptions grew in popularity and a number of pioneer masters emerged and exerted a far-reaching influence. Seal character calligraphy and li calligraphy (official script) were revised again. Literati painting played a dominant role and landscape painting and impressionistic ink and wash painting were prevalent Laquer craftwork in all shapes and sizes reached a great deal level of maturity. Existing techniques were improved and others developed. Embroidery reached unprecedented heights. Silk tapestries became more and more exquisite and the production of metal bodied enamelware reached a great peak. Bamboo wood and horn carvings also were developed. Jade objects went through three stages of development. 1. Frugal period, with jade production was small and made by ordinary craftsmen and lack originality. 2. Due to a growing Qing comic strength. and a plentiful supply of jade materials the jade industry began to flourish, and became one of the high points in jade carving in China. 3. Late period of the Qing Dynasty and due to increasing corruption in society and large number of difficulties, both domestic and external, there was less appetite for large scale pieces of jade in part also due to the high cost of production. This book, the ninth in a ten-volume collection, brings to the English-speaking world a series of books from China which has been complied by an Expert Committee of the Chinese Society of Cultural Relics. There are 377 descriptions.
