The success of Cinemalaya is undoubtedly due to the 165 filmmakers who for the past ten editions of the competition and festival produced quality films that have broken the boundaries of filmmaking in the country.” — Nestor O. Jardin, President Cinemalaya Foundation, Inc.

Book excerpt: The Philippine Islands, with a population of over ninety-seven million is comprised of seven thousand one hundred seventy islands with residents speaking seven hundred different dialects. Prominent among all the dialects are the Tagalog and Cebuano, widely spoken in many places in the archipelago. Tagalog, being renamed as Filipino, officially became the national language. Although considered as the designated national language known as the Filipino language, Tagalog originally was spoken only in the capital city, Manila compared to Cebuano which is widely spoken in the Visayas and Mindanao. Neighboring provinces in Luzon have their own spoken dialect such as Ilocano in the Ilocos region (northern Luzon), Bicolano in the Bicol region (lower eastern Luzon), Pampangueno in the central plain region, Caviteno in the lower western Region, and Tagalog in the lower southern region. The Cebuano dialect is spoken and understood in the Visayas and Mindanao regions in spite of their local dialects. There are also Cebuano speaking families living in some parts of Luzon. The Ilonggo in western Visayas, Waray in Samar and Leyte in eastern Visayas, and Boholano for people in Bohol in the southern Visayas are regional dialects, but these dialects have only minor deviations from the Cebuano dialect. People who speak the Cebuano dialect are called Bisaya even if they are living outside of the Cebu Province, as they comprise and represent the Visayas region. Where majority of the residents in the Mindanao region are from the Visayas, hence they are also called Bisaya.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This root-based dictionary of the Ilocano language is the most comprehensive dictionary produced of Ilocano (Iloko), the lingua franca of Northern Luzon, and historically the native language of the majority of Filipino immigrants to the United States. The body of the dictionary includes entries for roots and affixes with illustrative sentences, idioms, common derivations, and scientific names (when applicable). Ilocano synonyms are also furnished when appropriate. Derived words that undergo morphological fusion are listed as separate entries to facilitate lexical searches. There is also an affix cross-reference list to help the beginning student recognize root words. Unlike most dictionaries of Philippine languages, it has an extensive English to Ilocano section, information on the pre-Hispanic syllabary, and language maps of the Philippines showing where the largest concentration of Ilocano speakers reside. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why This Book Is Unique This book reveals the paradise-like splendor found in the 7,107 islands of the Philippines and the character, nature, values, and customs of Filipinos. This book also outlines an uncomplicated but in-depth exploration of Filipino grammar to make it easier and simpler for the learner to form word and sentence constructions. The lexicon section of this book contains synonyms, correlations, similarities, and antonyms, making it more comprehensive and multifaceted than the other Filipino dictionaries in the market today. Also added in it are motivational topics and cautionary alerts. Previously and currently, most of the explanations and illustrations presented in this book have hardly been covered in other Filipino dictionaries written by other authors. The highlighting of the Spanish and English words in this dictionary can help increase proficiency or, at the least, familiarity with four languages, Tagalog, Ilocano, Spanish, and English, not to mention Bicolano, Cebuano, Ybanag, and Gaddang vocabularies that are added into this book. This book is an essential language reference book for all the libraries in the world. It also serves as a handy translation aid for foreigners doing business in the Philippines and for the foreign embassies that are based in the Philippines, as well as religious and medical missionaries, charitable institutions, language translators, tourists, foreign students enrolled in the Philippines, expatriates that settle in the Philippines, and anyone interested in learning about the Philippines and Filipino languages.

Book excerpt: This is a dictionary of Cebuano Visayan, the language of the central part of the Philippines and much of Mindanao. Although the explanations are given in English, the aim of this work is not to provide English equivalents but to explain Cebuano forms in terms of themselves. It is meant as a reference work for Cebuano speakers and as a tool for students of the Cebuano language. There is a total of some 25,000 entries and an addenda of 700 forms which were prepared after the dictionary had been composed. This dictionary is the product of eleven years work by more than a hundred persons. The work was edited by John Wolff but the sources are entirely native, and all illustrations are composed by native speakers. To date, this work probably represents the most authoritative dictionary of the Cebuano Visayan language.

Book excerpt: "In 61 country reports and 12 reports on international processes, The Indigenous World 2012 gives a comprehensive update on the current situation of indigenous peoples and their human rights, and reports on the most important developments in international processes of relevance to indigenous peoples during 2011. The majority of the country reports document how the escalating momentum of the extractive industries is seriously threatening indigenous peoples' lives, livelihoods and cultures worldwide. They also reflect the importance given to discussions over indigenous peoples' right to participate in decision-making processes. On the international agenda, special focus was on the states' duty to consult indigenous peoples in order to seek their free, prior and informed consent when issues that will affect their lives and future are planned, and on defining best practices and modalities for participation and consultation processes that comply with indigenous peoples' rights." --from IWGIA Website.
