Book excerpt: In this book, Wolff-Michael Roth takes a 38-minute conversation in one science classroom as an occasion for analyzing learning and development from a perspective by and large inspired by the works of Mikhail Bakhtin but also influenced by Lev Vygotsky and 20th century European phenomenology and American pragmatism. He throws a new and very different light on the nature and use of language in science classroom, and its transformation. In so doing, he not only exposes the weaknesses of existing theoretical frameworks, including radical and social constructivism, but also exhibits problems in his own previous thinking about knowing and learning in science classrooms. The book particularly addresses issues normally out of the light of sight of science education research, including the material bodily principle, double-voicedness, laughter, coarse language, swearing, the carnal and carnivalistic aspects of life, code-switching, and the role of vernacular in the transformation of scientific language. Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which members the Bakhtin School (Michail Bakhtin, Valentin Voloshinov, and Pavel Medvedev) conceive of the relationship between language and literary fiction and the “world beyond language”. Beginning with the Russian Formalist definition of the literary as that which defamiliarizes our familiar perception of the world, it uses Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction of phenomenological perception and Ludwig Wittgenstein’s analysis of aspect perception to illuminate the Bakhtin School’s arguments that the world and language make contact through shared or contested evaluative intonation in the situated context of the utterance rather than the abstract, purely linguistic notion of the sentence. Saussurean linguistics and Russian Formalism, which treat language as the product of a disembodied system or as mere material, have excluded this aspect from their purview. The Bakhtin Circle’s trans- or metalinguistics seeks to restore our perception of the embodiment of language in the world of human social being: it seeks to show the way in which even fictional utterances are intonationally “intertwined by a thousand threads into the non-verbal real-life context”, and are dialogically related to other utterances as a matter of their internal constitution rather than by mere empirical contingency.

Bakhtin offers language as a social phenomenon and one that is fully embodied. Utterances are shown to be alive and enfleshed and their meanings realised in the context of given social dimensions. The organisation of this book corresponds with carnival practices of taking the high down to the low before replenishing its meaning anew. Thus early discussions of official language and the chronotope become exposed to descending levels of analysis and emphasis. Patients and practitioners are shown to occupy an entirely different spatio-temporal topography. These chronotopes have powerful borders and it is necessary to use the Carnival powers of cunning and deception in order to enter and to leave them. The book provides an overview of practitioners who have attempted such transgression and the author records his own unnerving experience as a pseudopatient. By exploring the context of psychiatry's unofficial voices: its terminology, jokes, parodies, and everyday narratives, the clinical landscape is shown to rely heavily on unofficial dialogues in order to safeguard an official identity.
