Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese entrepreneurs have founded more than thirty million private businesses since Beijing instituted economic reforms in the late 1970s. Most of these private ventures, however, have been denied access to official sources of credit. State banks continue to serve state-owned enterprises, yet most private financing remains illegal. How have Chinese entrepreneurs managed to fund their operations? In defiance of the national banking laws, small business owners have created a dizzying variety of informal financing mechanisms, including rotating credit associations and private banks disguised as other types of organizations. Back-Alley Banking includes lively biographical sketches of individual entrepreneurs; telling quotations from official documents, policy statements, and newspaper accounts; and interviews with a wide variety of women and men who give vivid narratives of their daily struggles, accomplishments, and hopes for future prosperity. Kellee S. Tsai's book draws upon her unparalleled fieldwork in China's world of shadow finance to challenge conventional ideas about the political economy of development. Business owners in China, she shows, have mobilized local social and political resources in innovative ways despite the absence of state-directed credit or a well-defined system of private property rights. Entrepreneurs and local officials have been able to draw on the uncertainty of formal political and economic institutions to enhance local prosperity.

Book excerpt: Considered by many to be a founder of Afrofuturism, Sun Ra—aka Herman Blount—was a composer, keyboardist, bandleader, philosopher, entrepreneur, poet, and self-proclaimed extraterrestrial from Saturn. He recorded over 200 albums with his Arkestra, which, dressed in Egypto-space costumes, played everything from boogie-woogie and swing to fusion and free jazz. John Szwed's Space is the Place is the definitive biography of this musical polymath, who was one of the twentieth century's greatest avant-garde artists and intellectuals. Charting the whole of Sun Ra's life and career, Szwed outlines how after years in Chicago as a blues and swing band pianist, Sun Ra set out in the 1950s to impart his views about the galaxy, black people, and spiritual matters by performing music with the Arkestra that was as vital and innovative as it was mercurial and confounding. Szwed's readers—whether they are just discovering Sun Ra or are among the legion of poets, artists, intellectuals, and musicians who consider him a spiritual godfather—will find that, indeed, space is the place.

Book excerpt: These short stories are about submissive women and the men who like to DISCIPLINE them... and about plenty of BACKDOOR happy endings! Stories included: Olivia's Backdoor Olivia gratefully accepts her husband, Paul's, discipline, but she doesn't understand why he's recently started spanking her every single day. She hasn't done anything wrong, but she'll take his punishment because she trusts that he knows best. Paul finally tells her the truth: that spanking her is tempting him to try out her backdoor. Olivia is nervous, but she tells him to do it - after all, it's his right as her husband to use her body for his pleasure - but she never could have guessed how much she'll end up liking it... and begging for more. Sophie's Punishment Sophie's husband has been out of town for a week, and she's in dire need of a spanking. When he finally gets home, she realizes that she's let herself break the rules so that he'll have to punish her. Even though he's tired, Luke takes his role as Head of Household in their Domestic Discipline lifestyle seriously. But can he find a way to escalate her punishment, when everything he does seems to turn her on? Lexi's First Spanking Lexi's husband, Josh, wants to spank her, but the idea makes her nervous. He's already explained that it's part of the Domestic Discipline lifestyle and, reluctantly, she agrees to give it a try. Josh plans to start with a simple over the knee bare bottom spanking, but every smack makes Lexi moan with pleasure. Can he find a way to escalate her punishment, when everything he does seems to turn her on? Ashlee's Degradation Ashlee's marriage to John is falling apart, and she blames it all on Mila, the submissive wife of her husband's boss. When John serves her with divorce papers, Ashlee confronts Mila. Instead of an enemy, Ashlee finds the answers she needs to save her marriage. Mila shares the secret of how she keeps her husband happy, and then chains a naked Ashlee to her bed and sends the pictures to John. Claire Disobeys Claire knows she needs to obey her husband, Greg, but she can't seem to stop herself from flinching away from his backdoor advances. She expects him to discipline her, as is his right in their Domestic Discipline marriage. Instead, his patience and understanding just drive home the fact that she's failing in her wifely duties. So Claire handcuffs herself to the bed and hides the key. Greg tries to use his authority as her husband to get her to tell him where it is, but for once, Claire disobeys. After she takes her hard punishment, Greg finally gives in and goes along with her plan. Ava's Supplication Ava marries a man twice her age, and begs him to try living a Domestic Discipline lifestyle. Her husband, Bruce, resists. He can't stomach the idea of spanking and punishing Ava. Until he finally tries it. Ava loves submitting completely to her husband's authority, and once Bruce starts to take charge, he lets himself use her in ways he never would have let himself dream of.

I’ve worked my ass off for what I have, and I’m damn proud of it. I started off with nothing and now I’m filthy rich. Let me tell you, there’s nothing like revenge to help you get your ass in gear. And that’s what I’m taking, with every exclusive resort I open—sweet, sweet revenge...on her. Nicole Westmore was my first love. The poor little rich girl stole my heart with her sweet smile, hot body, and irresistible innocence. The summer I worked for her father was the best time of my life...until he drove me away. Even then, I thought Nicole would wait for me. She didn’t. And so, I decided to get even, opening rival hotels, slowly driving them out of business. The old man is gone now, but Nicole is still running the company that’s about to collapse. All my hard work will soon pay off. And then I catch sight of her at a wedding, and all those feelings come rushing back--for both of us. Still, she doesn’t know what I’ve done—yet—and she seems more than willing. What will one night in her bed hurt? The sex is hotter than ever, and I can’t help wondering if I’ve made a mistake. Until I get up the next morning...and realize I’ve been kidnapped!

Book excerpt: From the 1600s, enslaved people, and after abolition of slavery, indentured labourers were transported to work on plantations in distant European colonies. Inhuman conditions and new pathogens often resulted in disease and death. Central to this book is the encounter between introduced and local understanding of disease and the therapeutic responses in the Caribbean, Indian and Pacific contexts. European response to diseases, focussed on protecting the white minority. Enslaved labourers from Africa and indentured labourers from India, China and Java provided interpretations and answers to health challenges based on their own cultures and medicinal understanding of the plants they had brought with them or which they found in the natural habitat of their new homes. Colonizers, enslaved and indentured labourers learned from each other and from the indigenous peoples who were marginalized by the expansion of plantations. This volume explores the medical, cultural and personal implications of these encounters, with the broad concept of medical pluralism linking the diversity of regional and cultural focus offered in each chapter. Book excerpt: If youre looking for a feel good read, Outside the Camp is not it. If you want joy without lament, grace without sin, light without darkness or love without pain, read something else. In fact, the wince factor of this book is through the roof, and I thought someone ought to warn you. But if you want to read something that is profoundly and Biblically true, revolutionary and life-changing, this is it. Garth has given Gods people a wonderful gift, and I rise up and call him blessed. You will, too! Steve Brown, professor, author, radio show host, and leader of Key Life Network I have more thoughts, emotions, and places your story took me than I am able to capture. I had to let you know that the Lord has deeply impacted me through your book. Thank you. Jim Amandus, Senior Pastor at Highlands Community Church near Seattle Outside the Camp tells the story of a former pastors journey through a season of turmoil and personal failure. The story of his decade of disillusionment sets the context for his observations as a church outsider in regards to how evangelical churches often fail in response to the wounded, the outcasts, and the sinners in their midst. Offered in the form of Biblical lament, three concerns are addressed: the evangelical church does not truly offeror even fully understandthe gospel of grace it preaches, instead suggesting that believers need to try harder and do more to prove themselves worthy of Gods favor, the faith community is artificial rather than authentic, and too often the wounds of its soldiers are left unattended, people whose pain is too deep and complex for the church to easily comprehend are referred outside the church for the help they need to survive, or they are simply neglected. The book concludes with a consideration of Gods intent to restore sinners by offering grace that is full and free, with a call for the church to once again communicate the unadulterated gospel to all who need its healing balm.

Book excerpt: This volume draws on the significance of the work of Marilyn Strathern in respect of its potential to queer anthropological analysis and to foster the reimagining of the object of anthropology. The authors examine the ways in which Strathern’s varied analytics facilitate the construction of alternative forms of anthropological thinking, and greater understanding of how knowledge practices of queer objects, subjects and relations operate and take effect. Queering Knowledge offers an innovative collection of writing, bringing about queer and anthropological syntheses through Strathern’s oeuvre. It will be relevant to scholars from anthropology as well as a number of other disciplines, including gender, sexuality and queer studies. *Winner of the 2020 Ruth Benedict Prize for Outstanding Edited Volume*
