Book excerpt: This dissertation explores twenty-first century presentations of Johann Sebastian Bach's St. Matthew and St. John Passions (BWV 244 and 245) in the context of Bach festivals in the United States. Building upon music festival studies by scholars such as Jonathan R. Wynn, Felicia Youngblood, Philip Bohlman, Jeff Todd Titon, and Tamara E. Livingston, I discuss the importance of Bach festival infrastructures in creating community and sustaining modern interest in historical pieces such as the Passions. Though originally liturgical, Bach's Passions quickly entered the concert repertoire after Mendelssohn's 1829 Berlin performance; similarly, the Passions have a rich American performance history and an important connection with American secular concert environments. Bach festivals, including concert series and performances by professional and amateur choral societies, are currently the primary venue for Bach's larger choral-orchestral works such as the Passions. Although these presentations may take place in secular concert halls or amphitheaters, or in larger church or church-owned spaces, I argue that the overarching festival environments crucially allow diversely minded performers and audience members to interact with the religious content inherent in the Passions in a nonreligious performative space. I comparatively examine the original religious context of the works through the scholarship of musicologists including Christoph Wolff, Markus Rathey, Daniel R. Melamed, and John Butt. Modern Passion performances create spaces of community for performers, audiences, and administrators, as I explore through the spatial theories of Henri Lefebvre and Michel de Certeau. Passion performances create spaces of community for performers and audiences, as well as concert presenters, managers, and venue owners. My research at Passion performances by the Baldwin Wallace Bach Festival, the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park, the Bach Society of Saint Louis, the Carmel Bach Festival, the Oregon Bach Festival, the American Bach Soloists, the Chicago Bach Project, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst Bach Festival, illustrates the depth and breadth of the "Passion communities" that form around modern performances. Participants tend to value a diversity of approaches to interacting with the religious story of Christ's Crucifixion. Some focus on larger, cross-cultural themes of love and sacrifice, while others treat the Passions as dramatic literary and musical pieces of Western cultural heritage. Others simply enjoy the sonic realizations of Bach's skillful text-painting. My interviews with festival participants further reveal that while the religious content is often a topic of conversation, the value of diversity is perhaps the most meaningful result of performing, sponsoring, or listening to modern Passion presentations. Singing and playing these works in festival contexts forms a communal space that moves beyond the works' liturgical origins to create a modern American community built upon a shared musical experience.
