The Rock of the Babb Family in America is none other than the legendary Sheriff of the Isles of Shoals, Phillip Babb. He was as tough as the granite that bears his name. In the most comprehensive look ever into his life, get to know all about him and the people that he called family. Find out what brought them to the Isles, who they were and where they came from. In the first volume of this bold new series, I work to set the stage for the difficult work of finding where Phillip came from. Most of this work is being published for the very first time and represents a compilation of the work I've done over the past 14 years. New volumes will follow as they are completed, to give the most complete picture ever of Babb Families around the World.

Book excerpt: As I prepared for this volume, I was struck by a document for Charles Babb (3-1-4) who was court martialed 3 times during his short military career. The first time for being Drunk, the next for being insolent with this commander and the 3rd time for being disobedient. Though the DNA shows that are not of the same ancestry, I couldn't help but think that he sounds so much like the descendants of Phillip Babb of the Isles of Shoals. It seems that troublemakers are what runs in common throughout all the lineages of Babbs. After all, there are things more binding than blood. They are not all bad, all Babbs!

You show up ready to spend some great leisure time out on the lake. But shortly after you arrive, a massive storm sets in and lingers for the next several days. As you stand inside, watching the rain pour down, you begin a search for something to do. The only thing you come across is an opened box that contains a Jig-Saw puzzle. The lid is missing, so you have no grasp of what picture will finally appear when it is assembled. You also don't know how many pieces there should be, or if they are all there. Even worse, you consider that this might be two different puzzles that have had the pieces co-mingled. Despite your feeling of dread you begin the assembly process anyway. This is essentially what members of the Babb families of North Carolina have to do when assembling their family tree. The various branches present one of the biggest unsolved mysteries of our collective family tree. Remaining records are scarce, many are missing, some could be from other trees and several pieces look identical. There are more missing links than can easily be discussed. We see a large number of branches with no trunk to connect them. Inspite of these obstacles, a single document sheds light on a connection between the two trees and I work toward uniting them and finding a path back to England.

There are a number of theories about where he came from. In this book we will discuss those options and cover his descendants in detail. There likely isn't a paper trail that will prove Benjamin's ancestry, so we seek to solve the puzzle through Y-DNA testing.

Book excerpt: On the west bank of the Mississippi lies the New Orleans neighborhood of Algiers. Short on hope but big on dreams, its mostly poor and marginalized residents find joy on Friday nights when the Cougars of Edna Karr High School take the field. For years, this football program has brought glory to Algiers, winning three consecutive state championships and sending dozens of young men to college on football scholarships. Although he is preparing for a fourth title, head coach Brice Brown is focused on something else: keeping his players alive. An epidemic of gun violence plagues New Orleans and its surrounding communities and has claimed many innocent lives, including Brown’s former star quarterback, Tollette “Tonka” George, shot near a local gas station. In Across the River, award-winning sports journalist Kent Babb follows the Karr football team through its 2019 season as Brown and his team—perhaps the scrappiest and most rebellious group in the program’s history—vie to again succeed on and off the field. What is sure to be a classic work of sports journalism, Across the River is a necessary investigation into the serious realities of young athletes in struggling neighborhoods: gentrification, eviction, mental health issues, the drug trade, and gun violence. It offers a rich and unflinching portrait of a coach, his players, and the West Bank, a community where it’s difficult—but not impossible—to rise above the chaos, discover purpose, and find a way out.

Book excerpt: Nick Nurse distills the wisdom, insight, and experiences that helped him lead the Toronto Raptors to the NBA championship in his first year as head coach. Foreword by Phil Jackson. NBA fans had modest expectations for rookie coach Nick Nurse and his Toronto Raptors. But what those naysayers didn't realize was that Nurse had spent the past thirty years proving himself at every level of the game, from youth programs and college ball to the NBA D League and Britain's struggling pro circuit. While few coaches have taken such a circuitous path to pro basketball's promised land, the journey-which began at Kuemper Catholic high school in Carroll, Iowa-forged a coach who proved to be as unshakable as he is personable. On the road, he is known to bring his guitar and keyboard for late-night jazz and blues sessions. In the locker room, he's steadfast and even-keeled regardless of the score. On the court, he pulls out old-school tactics with astounding success. A rookie in name but a veteran in attitude, Nurse is seemingly above the chaos of the game and, with only two seasons on his résumé, has already established himself as one of the NBA's most admired head coaches. Now, in this revealing new book-equal parts personal memoir, leadership manifesto, and philosophical meditation-Nurse tells his own story. Given unprecedented access inside the Raptors' locker room, readers get an intimate study of not only the team culture he has built, but also of a rookie coach's unique dynamic with the star players-such as Kawhi Leonard, Kyle Lowry, and Pascal Siakam-who helped trailblaze the 2019 championship run. As much for readers of Ray Dalio as for fans of John Wooden and Pat Summitt, Rapture promises to be a necessary read for anyone looking to forge their own path to success.

Book excerpt: The Somerset Dragons are one of the oldest and largest lineages of Babbs in England originating in the Pitminster & Trull area of Somerset County (Shire). The tree spans 5 Continents and 1358 people. Their lineage is proven through DNA testing of multiple descendants. The DNA tests have shown a connection between what was previously known as Somerset Pedigree 01 and Somerset Pedigree 02. This connection was already believed to exist, but the paper trail is small in such distant times. Somerset Pedigree 03 has also been added to this collection, as the parents of Francis Babb of Pitminster having been documented through traditional methods. The Crest used to represent this great house of Babbs is NOT historic, but a modern interpretation of what a crest for this family might look like. It draws upon the mascot of the County of Somerset, which is the Dragon and uses a similar color scheme to their current flag. Using mascots will help everyone to remember which lineage they are a part of. Only lines proven via DNA have a mascot and crest.

Book excerpt: From a former US Assistant Surgeon General comes the epic tale of a young man’s struggle to survive a journey across America during the Civil War. Told by his stepmother that he alone had been responsible for the death of his mother, abandoned by the earlier departure of his father for the California 1849 goldfields, and threatened with being locked in a cage with his stepmother’s psychotic brother, eight-year-old Benjamin Franklin “B .F.” Windes decides to abandon home and trail his father’s path. Thus begins a trip of constant struggle with disease, severe weather, hardship, Indian attack, and death on his lone journey across much of what is now the United States. B.F. spends the next eleven years in gold rush towns in California—first as a barber, then as a physician’s assistant—before departing for the Caribbean at age nineteen, where he becomes a blockade-runner during the American Civil War. At war’s end, he discovers that the men he had been dealing with were nothing more than common murderers and thieves—Bushwhackers. He travels to the Missouri Ozarks where he meets the girl of his dreams. But their romance is threatened when he finds himself battling a man from his past in order to safeguard his family and his future. Orphan Hero, based on the life of the author’s great-grandfather in the mid-nineteenth century, is a tale of courage and perseverance in the face of incredible hardship. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. I believe that only by knowing ALL the lines of Babbs can we begin to accurately start our process of matching and thus narrow our focus. The complex nature of the multiple lines means that special care should be taken when attempting to draw connections, so as not to confuse the matter.

Book excerpt: Allen Iverson transcended race, celebrity, and pop culture and emerged from a troubled past to become one of the most successful and highly compensated athletes in the world. Babb examines what drove his successes and failures, getting behind the familiar, sanitized, and heroic version of Iverson-- the hard-charging, hard-partying athlete who played every game as if it were his last. He brings to life a private, loyal, and often generous Allen Iverson who rarely made the headlines, revealing the back story behind some of Iverson's most memorable moments, and delves deep to discover where Iverson's demons lurked. Over time, Iverson himself came to believe his own hype: that he lived in a world where celebrity is eternal and riches are everlasting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sanora Babb’s long-hidden novel Whose Names Are Unknown tells an intimate story of the High Plains farmers who fled drought dust storms during the Great Depression. Written with empathy for the farmers’ plight, this powerful narrative is based upon the author’s firsthand experience. This clear-eyed and unsentimental story centers on the fictional Dunne family as they struggle to survive and endure while never losing faith in themselves. In the Oklahoma Panhandle, Milt, Julia, their two little girls, and Milt’s father, Konkie, share a life of cramped circumstances in a one-room dugout with never enough to eat. Yet buried in the drudgery of their everyday life are aspirations, failed dreams, and fleeting moments of hope. The land is their dream. The Dunne family and the farmers around them fight desperately for the land they love, but the droughts of the thirties force them to abandon their fields. When they join the exodus to the irrigated valleys of California, they discover not the promised land, but an abusive labor system arrayed against destitute immigrants. The system labels all farmers like them as worthless “Okies” and earmarks them for beatings and worse when hardworking men and women, such as Milt and Julia, object to wages so low they can’t possibly feed their children. The informal communal relations these dryland farmers knew on the High Plains gradually coalesce into a shared determination to resist. Realizing that a unified community is their best hope for survival, the Dunnes join with their fellow workers and begin the struggle to improve migrant working conditions through democratic organization and collective protest. Babb wrote Whose Names are Unknown in the 1930s while working with refugee farmers in the Farm Security Administration (FSA) camps of California. Originally from the Oklahoma Panhandle are herself, Babb, who had first come to Los Angeles in 1929 as a journalist, joined FSA camp administrator Tom Collins in 1938 to help the uprooted farmers. As Lawrence R. Rodgers notes in his foreword, Babb submitted the manuscript for this book to Random House for consideration in 1939. Editor Bennett Cerf planned to publish this “exceptionally fine” novel but when John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath swept the nation, Cerf explained that the market could not support two books on the subject. Babb has since shared her manuscript with interested scholars who have deemed it a classic in its own right. In an era when the country was deeply divided on social legislation issues and millions drifted unemployed and homeless, Babb recorded the stories of the people she greatly respected, those “whose names are unknown.” In doing so, she returned to them their identities and dignity, and put a human face on economic disaster and social distress.
