Book Synopsis Abandoned in Place by : Roland Miller
Download or read book Abandoned in Place written by Roland Miller and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stenciled on many of the deactivated facilities at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the evocative phrase “abandoned in place” indicates the structures that have been deserted. Some structures, too solid for any known method of demolition, stand empty and unused in the wake of the early period of US space exploration. Now Roland Miller’s color photographs document the NASA, Air Force, and Army facilities across the nation that once played a crucial role in the space race. Rapidly succumbing to the elements and demolition, most of the blockhouses, launch towers, tunnels, test stands, and control rooms featured in Abandoned in Place are located at secure military or NASA facilities with little or no public access. Some have been repurposed, but over half of the facilities photographed no longer exist. The haunting images collected here impart artistic insight while preserving an important period in history.
Book Synopsis Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K-12 by : Peter Liljedahl
Download or read book Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K-12 written by Peter Liljedahl and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thinking student is an engaged student Teachers often find it difficult to implement lessons that help students go beyond rote memorization and repetitive calculations. In fact, institutional norms and habits that permeate all classrooms can actually be enabling "non-thinking" student behavior. Sparked by observing teachers struggle to implement rich mathematics tasks to engage students in deep thinking, Peter Liljedahl has translated his 15 years of research into this practical guide on how to move toward a thinking classroom. Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, Grades K–12 helps teachers implement 14 optimal practices for thinking that create an ideal setting for deep mathematics learning to occur. This guide Provides the what, why, and how of each practice and answers teachers’ most frequently asked questions Includes firsthand accounts of how these practices foster thinking through teacher and student interviews and student work samples Offers a plethora of macro moves, micro moves, and rich tasks to get started Organizes the 14 practices into four toolkits that can be implemented in order and built on throughout the year When combined, these unique research-based practices create the optimal conditions for learner-centered, student-owned deep mathematical thinking and learning, and have the power to transform mathematics classrooms like never before.

Download or read book School Culture written by Jon Prosser and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1999-06-02 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `I waited with great anticipation to receive Jon Prosser′s book, School Culture. The wait was worth it and I wasn′t to be disappointed... This is a fine book bringing to a reader a credible and solid set of work′ - Youth and Policy `The most helpful book on genuine school improvement that I have ever read′ - LDR National College for School Leadership `Jon Prosser has put together an eclectic volume. School Culture is not isolated from out of school forces, most of the authors argue Jon Prosser and Terry Warbuton′s piece analyzing the visual representation of schools and teaching shows this in a looking-glass manner. The different chapters challenge us to think again about what we mean by ethos and atmosphere. What the volume demonstrates is just how difficult and challenging it is to define what constitutes a school′s culture′ - Journal of Education for Teaching School culture is today one of the most important themes in education and educational research. This book draws on a wide range of contemporary perspectives to provide an insight into the key issues and concepts which underpin school culture. The first part of the book is concerned with culture as an holistic concept. The second part adopts the stance that school culture is the sum of its subcultures. The contributors focus on significant groups such as teachers and students, or theme, for example sexuality, and examine in depth the nature and character of schooling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From pornography to autobiography, from the Cold War to the sexual revolution, from rural roots and mythologies to the queer meccas of Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal, The Romance of Transgression in Canada is a history of sexual representation on the large and small screen in English Canada and Quebec. Thomas Waugh identifies the queerness that has emerged at the centre of our national sex-obsessed cinema, filling a gap in the scholarly literature. In Part One he explores the explosive canon of artists such as Norman McLaren, Claude Jutra, Colin Campbell, Paul Wong, John Greyson, Patricia Rozema, Lea Pool, Bruce Labruce, Esther Valiquette, Marc Paradis, and Mirha-Soleil Ross. Part Two is an encyclopaedia of short essays covering 340 filmmakers, video artists, and institutions. The Romance of Transgression in Canada is both a scholarly account and a celebration of Canadian LGBTQ films - moving images that have scandalized conservative politicans, but are the envy of queer cultural festivals around the world.

Book Synopsis Not Just Any Dress by : Sandra Weber
Download or read book Not Just Any Dress written by Sandra Weber and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If dresses could talk, what stories might they tell? This compelling collection of short stories, essays, and poems features dress as the structural grounding for autobiographical accounts from women's lives in Western society. Often personal in nature, these «dress stories» point unfailingly to matters of social and cultural import. Some of the dresses described inhabit the popular imagination: the little girl dress, the communion dress, the school uniform, the prom dress, the wedding dress, the little black dress, and the burial dress. Beyond the semiotic, tactile, and visual aspects of the dresses themselves, the narratives delve into what dresses reveal about fundamental aspects of human experience: identity, embodiment, relationship, and mortality. Bought or made, then worn, forgotten, remembered, re-constructed, and re-interpreted, each dress offers a new glimpse into how we construct meaning in our daily lives, and how dresses serve to reinforce or resist social structures and cultural expectations.
