Book excerpt: Although the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program has been operating in San Diego County for more than twenty years, there was a lack of research investigating how AVID program graduates experienced the transition to college. A well-established positive correlation between acceptances to four-year universities by AVID program graduates exists, but research on AVID lacked individual student narrative needed to give more depth to the data. The purpose of this case study was to investigate the transition experiences of AVID program graduates who were beginning their second year of college at competitive four-year public universities. All eight participants, in the AVID pre-college program for at least three years, had successfully transitioned to the university. The study was framed by two research questions: (1) How did AVID program graduates adapt academically and culturally to a four-year public university during their first year? (2) In what ways did they attribute their persistence in college to their high school AVID experience? The findings indicated that the participants, all first generation college, felt both academically and culturally challenged during the transitional year, especially in the areas of critical reading and expository writing. Some participants, not accustomed to the academic reading and writing standards of the university, used a trial and error method to attempt to meet the requirements and did not consistently execute the strategies learned in AVID. These students reported missing classes and avoiding reading assignments. This lack of academic persistence was troublesome for AVID trained students, especially in the critical early stages of college transition. As the students moved through the transition phase, they showed evidence of developing an academic identity, and increasing skill navigating university culture. All participants still utilized several AVID study techniques such as Cornell note-taking and study groups. Support given by participants' families was a reoccurring theme, but their families lacked the knowledge to help these students enter college. AVID teachers filled this gap by becoming surrogate school parents who provided social and cultural capital in the form of information, study skills and organizational structure, which allowed the participants to navigate their way into college and persist.

Book excerpt: The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program is designed to increase student performance through a college readiness system which provides students access to college preparatory curriculum. The beliefs sustained within the AVID philosophy maintain that when high student standards are upheld and academic and social support is provided, students will excel. The purpose of this study was to compare campus college readiness rates of students participating in the AVID program with non-AVID students. The study analyzed the college readiness rates of ninth through twelfth grade students in 77 public high schools by 1) comparing AVID to non-AVID students, 2) determining the relationship between college readiness and attendance, Advanced Placement, and type of graduation plan, and 3) calculating the correlation between attendance, Advanced Placement participation, and Recommended High School Program or Distinguished Achievement Program graduation plans between college readiness Language Arts and Mathematics. The analysis included independent samples t -tests, multiple regression and third order partial correlations. The results of this quantitative study revealed attendance, participation in Advanced Placement course enrollment, and college readiness Language Arts and Mathematics rates of AVID students were higher than non-AVID students. The study indicated non-AVID attendance, AVID attendance, and non-AVID Advanced Placement were the strongest predictive variables of college readiness in the area of Language Arts. Non-AVID attendance, non-AVID participation in Advanced Placement and AVID graduation plans were the strongest predictive variables of college readiness in the area of Mathematics. Results revealed disparity between Advanced Placement enrollment rates of AVID and non-AVID students. T -test results indicated a greater percentage of AVID students enrolled in and completed Advanced Placement courses than non-AVID students. In contrast, the multiple regression analysis identifying the variables most predictive of college readiness Language Arts and Mathematics exposed non-AVID Advanced Placement as a more potent predictor than the AVID Advanced Placement variable. This suggested that when all college readiness variables were considered, non- disadvantaged students had the greatest propensity to reach college readiness levels. Schools must take purposeful action to ensure students without the proclivity for academic success have the supportive learning environment needed to achieve college readiness levels.

Book excerpt: With the support of the secondary school intervention program Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), the undergraduates I interviewed overcame obstacles in completing college requirements and obtaining access to California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM). It might be assumed; therefore, that they entered the university prepared for the challenges they encounter. Indeed, respondents still utilized tangible AVID skills, such as note-taking and organizational strategies, but AVID may not anticipate college integration barriers. Students of color bring with them to a primarily white institution of higher learning experiences of exclusion and unequal educational and social opportunity. My findings indicated, however, that agency and resistance emerged from AVID graduates' college integration experiences. Respondents mediated barriers by demonstrating accommodation without assimilation; relied on a campus cultural translator and ethnic in-group peers for support. Students prioritized familial values, expressed goals of becoming cultural translators; they embraced a dynamic dual identity, and they displayed a simultaneous straddling of cultures. I employ a framework of critical race theories; and my findings, based on twelve qualitative interviews with AVID graduates currently pursuing undergraduate degrees at CSUSM, contribute to the research on support services which seek to improve minority students' persistence and retention. Book excerpt: This study considers the perceptions of the AVID program of 3 teachers within 3 counties in North Carolina. Although multiple student achievement programs are available to public schools today, the AVID program is the one most commonly adopted because AVID aggressively claims positive results. According to the AVID program, more AVID graduates apply, attend, and graduate from higher education than national and local averages. AVID is designed to assist those students from the "forgotten middle," characterized by those with high test scores, average-to-low grades, and minority or low-socioeconomic status who will be the first in their family to attend college. Within the program are 11 components that must be followed in order for school districts to receive AVID certification. Several studies of the AVID program have investigated the quantitative claims of the program, but very few have addressed qualitative concerns. This study seeks to provide a cross-case analysis of the teacher's perspective of AVID in light of teaching practices and teacher expectations. The research was conducted through semi-structured interview questions, observation, and data collection. Study findings demonstrate that the participants are largely satisfied with their experience and training in the AVID program although they acknowledge the initial training is overwhelming. They do not believe that AVID alters the expectations they have for themselves or for their students. They provide several recommendations on how AVID can improve in order to meet their needs as well as those of the AVID students. Finally, this study suggests a number of other questions for future research.

In 1980, the AVID program began as a support class to help struggling students. Over the years, the strategies developed by Mary Swanson, transformed the program which has been adopted by school districts throughout California to help underrepresented, first generation minority, and low socio-economic high school students realize the dream of going to college. Many other states and countries have also adopted the AVID strategies into their schools. The AVID program offers three components. In the first component, AVID offers students the opportunity to learn Cornell note-taking strategies, participate in weekly tutorials, and Socratic seminars. Secondly, students have an opportunity to volunteer time to work with community organizations. Lastly, students learn about career opportunities available to them. Several themes emerged from the analysis of the interview data. The participants, in this study, use the strategies taught in their high school AVID program to successfully complete college courses. They are more confident speaking in public because AVID required them to take part in community service. Participants appreciate that their high school AVID program provided opportunities to visit college and university campuses and to learn about career choices.

As a result Texas schools utilize targeted intervention to produce more college-ready students. The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) system is widely used by over 945 schools in Texas to aid in producing college ready students. This purpose of this study was to examine the students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of the AVID program for their own college readiness. This study targeted five high schools along the Interstate 35 corridor in North Central Texas that utilize the AVID program. This study surveyed high school seniors shortly before their high school graduation on their perceptions of the AVID program and what individual aspects of AVID they believed to be the most useful in preparing them for college coursework. The results revealed that the student participants positively viewed AVID and believed that they were more college ready as a result of participation in the AVID program. The students also identified specific strategies of AVID they believed the most useful to their academic success. Qualitative data identified two major themes of AVID that students perceived the most beneficial. These student-identified themes were: organization and collaboration.

Book excerpt: This research study examined the impact of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program on students' self-efficacy and academic achievement outcome measures at the middle and high school level. AVID is a college readiness system designed to prepare at-risk students in the fourth through 12th grade for college. The main focus of this study was to determine if there was a difference in students' self-efficacy based on the number of years in the AVID program and if there was a difference in AVID students' academic achievement outcome measures between seventh and eighth grade in reading and math. Participants included seventh through 11th grade AVID students in one suburban school district within northeast Ohio (N = 239). These students reported perceptions of their self-efficacy on the My Voice Survey (QISA, 2010). Student achievement data were obtained from the 2010-2011 Ohio Department of Education Local Report Card. Through multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) the data were analyzed. Findings from this study indicated that there were statistically significant differences in students' self-efficacy based on the number of years in the AVID program and statistically significant differences in academic achievement outcome measures between seventh and eighth grade for AVID students in reading and math. AVID students' active engagement was statistically significant in year 1 of the AVID program when compared to year 2, year 3 or more. Seventh grade AVID students' math scores had a statistically significant higher mean score (414.66) than did eighth grade AVID students' math scores (403.02). These results suggested that AVID students' self-efficacy and academic achievement outcomes did not increase as they progressed through the program. The data showed that perhaps the AVID program may not be the answer to the problem that was posed in this study and that the AVID program alone may not be the reason for the findings of the study. The results may be attributed to other variables beyond the AVID program, such as high quality instruction from teachers, mentoring from tutors, support from guidance counselors, or encouragement from family members.

This study examines the impact of the AVID program at one Southern California high-performing school on its students' academics and perceptions of school and learning. The study found that students within the AVID program increased their GPAs and those who had been in for two years had even stronger growth. Additionally, results showed that students overwhelmingly felt that the program had a positive impact on their school and learning, most especially on aspects of organization, collaboration, and the AVID family.
