Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study conducted an inventory of existing avalanche paths along Colorado Highways. Information was collected on the size and type of each avalanche path, the historical frequency of avalanche occurrences, the number of avalanche tracks, the length of highway exposed, the volume of traffic on the road, the traffic peak characteristics, the speed of traffic and the consequences of an avalanche encounter with a vehicle. This information was used to generate an Avalanche Hazard Index (AHI) for Colorado Highways. The concept of the AHI has been used in the past as a quantitative measure of the avalanche hazard to traffic. The AHI values calculated in this study are considered relative values and can be used to compare the hazards of particular avalanche paths or avalanche prone routes in Colorado.

Book excerpt: This 33-mile segment of US Highway 550 has a greater avalanche hazard than aU other Colorado highways combined. A total of 95 avalanche paths intersect the highway with an avalanche hazard of 443. More than 70 encounters between avalanches and vehicle. and six fatalities have occurred since 1950. The objective of this research project is to develop a methodology for calculating the severity of a particular avalanche activity. The project is not intended to develop a "black box" type of computer program for avalanche forecasting. Instead, it is intending to investigate parameters that may be important in forecasting on Highway 550, and to suggest how they may be used to forecast avalanches in the future

Book excerpt: The present mortality as a result of snow avalanches exceeds the average mortality caused by earthquakes as well as all other forms of slope failure combined. Snow avalanches can range from small amounts of loose snow moving rapidly down a slope to slab avalanches, in which large chunks of snow break off and destroy everything in their path. Although considered a hazard in the United States since the westward expansion in the nineteenth century, in modern times snow avalanches are an increasing concern in recreational mountainous areas. However, programs for snow avalanche hazard mitigation in other countries are far ahead of those in the United States. The book identifies several steps that should be taken by the United States in order to establish guidelines for research, technology transfer, and avalanche legislation and zoning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the phenomena that snow avalanches produce sounds in the 0.5 to 5.0 Hertz range. It also documents testing of an infrasound detection system to detect snow avalanches in the southwest mountains of Colorado. Two infrasound sensors were installed so the direction of the sound could be determined by comparing the phasing and arrival times. Avalanche detection was sometime obscured because of the high mountains nearby diverting the sound and causing clear-air turbulence. Linking sound events with avalanche events was hampered by the fact that the time of actual avalanches could only be determined within a 12-hour period.

Book excerpt: This report represents the findings of a study that demonstrates the feasibility of estimating link travel time and speed in real-time for rural, mountainous sections of interstate freeway in Colorado using vehicles instrumented with global positioning system (GPS) receivers, serving as probes in traffic streams. The system configuration developed includes a cost-effective, portable GPS deployment unit, communication links to a server PC and an integrated prototype system for vehicle tracking and estimating link travel time statistics. This study was carried out in two phases. The objective of the first phase was to identify a cost-effective means of monitoring traffic within a rural, mountainous stretch of the I-70 freeway. An algorithm was developed to estimate average link speed, travel time and the standard error of estimates to provide user information on the reliability of the estimates based on the probe data. The algorithm was tested for different traffic conditions and geometric characteristics of links. In the second phase of the project, a real-time demonstrational prototype was developed to receive, process and estimate link travel time and speed statistics in real-time. The system was tested off-line and on-line based on field data received from the I-70 corridor. In addition, GPS receivers were deployed using a commercial vanpool service and the system was evaluated further.

Book excerpt: Portions of the driving lane on I-76 located in the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Region 4 are seriously distressed. To help prolong the life of the Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Region 4 has placed signs advising truckers to use the passing lane between Roggen and the Nebraska state line [approximately 140 miles (225 km)]. A test section well within the signed test area advising the truckers to use the passing lane and a control section just prior to the signed area were established and evaluated over a four year period. Roughness data taken with an Ames Profilograph, slab faulting measured with a Georgia fault meter, and overall physical pavement distress were noted and used as a comparison between driving lane and passing lane within the two sections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the post-construction evaluation of the fast track pavement in Sterling, Colorado. The field evaluation consisted of visual inspection, fault measurement, profile measurement and distress survey. A set of falling weight deflectometer (FWD) measurements was also acquired to assess the structural responses and to evaluate load transfer efficiency between the slabs. The results of this study demonstrated that fast track concrete can be as durable as the conventional concrete pavement. After seven years of being in service the pavement has shown no sign of fatigue, only some minor distresses unrelated to fast track techniques.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the research conducted was to determine if aggregate degradation takes place and to measure the possible degree of degradation after bituminous mixtures are heated inside the NCAT Asphalt Content Tester. A study was conducted which compared the original aggregate blend (control specimens) to the residual aggregate blend (experimental specimens) obtained after several bituminous mixtures were heated inside the NCAT Asphalt Content Tester. The control specimens and the experimental specimens used to produce the bituminous mixtures were the result of an aggregate sample which was split three times. Two methods of analysis were used to review the gradation results.
